BMW G80 M3 Manual The Anatomy Explained of Doing a Rogue Engineering SSK. In this video I highlight how the OEM BMW M3 manual shifter assembly works as this has been their design of choice for such a long time on prior M variants from E92 to F80 and beyond. The system from the factory is mushy and does not feel anywhere near as precise as cars from Porsche or the American market muscle cars. The Rogue Engineering kits uses a modified BMW carrier housing along with a bespoke adjustable shift lever that lets you adjust how much throw reduction you desire during the installation. The front carrier bushings are swapped out for Delrin units all to reduce lateral deflection which caused shifter rod selector bind. Having the SSK in my car for over 6 months it was an improvement but still not perfect. Another BMW parts vendor had a false listing on their website ( Turner Motorsport) showing an upgraded G80 Manual rear carrier mount. I took the entire car apart again to find out they did not even test this on a G80 and the information was false. When I did this I contacted Ben from Rogue Engineering and mentioned how the rear mount really needs an upgrade. Few months later he finally brought my suggestion to fruition. The rear mount coupled with the rest of the SSK and my weighted Billetworkz shift knob is the absolute best these cars will ever feel and get. I am very happy overall and for anyone local I can offer a test drive for anyone considering these upgrades. We also can perform the full installation and provide the parts as well so please contact us through the Auto Fanatic website contact forms. Man I wish I would’ve done some trans mods on my 6spd 135i. Great engine terrible shifter feel. That bind going into 1, then the clunk going 1-2 got old very quick. Glad the newer platforms have options to resolve that! Thanks for sharing

Yeah BMW never made great shifters unfortunately. They been using this clumsy design for far too long

Thanks for the info. I really don't mind the shifter in my G80, but this does have me thinking. What about not doing the whole SSK and just changing to the RE rear mount and to the Delrin bushings? Still a tough DIY as well?

You can just do bushes and rear mount but front ones are a huge pita it won’t be easy without removing the cast arm out from under

Ima have to look into this. Does it make the shift more comfortable? Dunno if you’ve driven a Civic SI or Type R but that shift is orgasmic.

Just installed the rogue rear carrier on my car this afternoon! Haven't driven it yet but it feels better from the seat. As you said a lot easier than the SSK, which is indeed a huge pain in the ass.

Where are you based in the NY-Metro area? I am taking delivery of a '24 M3 in October and am interested in having you install the kit shortly after I take delivery.

Do you feel the rear mount is enough to make a noticeable differnece for shiting fast? Or do you feel the full kit is mandatory to address all the comings of the stock system? Mainly trying to gauge if i should get the whole kit or just the rear.

Even doing both i still wasn’t happy and was a big reason i sold the M3. Rear mount helps slightly but issue is long linkage and connecting points it never feels solid or direct

My b8.5 audi suffers from lateral slop and i always have issues going into 2nd under heavier acceleration. I forget the company but they make a casing that surrounds the shifter thats made of aluminum that takes out that slop. I have one but been to lazy to put it in 😂

thank you for the excellent overview. I have always dreamed on an m3 but turned off by countless people saying the shifting feel is not great. Having just got an FL5 civic type R earlier this year, which is amazing, I must say its going to be hard to ever leave. If the touring comes to the US I will grab one even though no manual. I know time is running out on manual m3s, I just hope I can make it happen before it is too late.

I ended up selling the M3 i just didn’t love it and shifter was a big part of my dislike if you want the absolute best manual transmission in a sport sedan go drive the Cadillac CT4V Blackwing I came really close to buying it but the dealers were impossible to work up a fair deal. I bought another Alfa and love it but the Blackwing manual is the one to get if you gotta shift gears

@@autofanaticcars right on. thanks for sharing. I could not justify the MPG of the CTV. Killer car but just a bit too much for me as a daily. If it only got near 30 hwy mpg it would be perfect.

No G81 (wagon) coming to the states. I got a G80 M3 manual and it’s worth it. My thoughts were the same, last of the powerful gas engines with a manual transmission. Definitely the last manual M3

I never did understand the problem people have with the stock shifter. Here goes, years back in the late 90's, most shifters were stiff, you could hear the click, it entered into place with zero allowance, problem was, anytime you miss a shift say 2 to 3, or 3 to 4 you hear a very hard sound (wrong gear engagement), secondly, if you drove that stick for very long period of time, the whole experience felt rough. In fact, cars with hard shifters as I've described were at the low end of the spectrum, that when you drove a Mercedes then with a smooth shift (Rubbery) with some allowance, you are like....."o this feel so nice and lux". Good MT drivers focus on the engine and rpm instinctively, not really the feel of the gear, and try to make the changes as smooth as you were driving an automatic. An European perspective.

Yeah I have a G80 manual and it’s not bad at all. It’s by no means great but it’s solid. I’d love to upgrade it to feel something like a Civic Type R or Porsche GT3 though. Those are next level
