In this video, I'll be sharing my honest review of the BMW i3, highlighting the five aspects I absolutely love and the five frustrating aspects that can be a cause for concern. Join me as I explore the unique features and drawbacks of this innovative electric vehicle.
The BMW i3 has gained popularity for its commitment to sustainability and efficiency, making it a trailblazer in the EV sphere. I discuss its low operating costs, energy efficiency, and clever packaging, which provide great value. On the flip side, I address the limited range, missing features, and concerns with material quality. Additionally, I delve into the design elements, usability, and the benefits of the Range Extender option. However, I also touch upon reliability issues and expensive repairs. Join me for an honest and comprehensive review of the BMW i3. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and leave your thoughts in the comments below. Thanks for watching!

Enjoying your loyalty to this car. I have a 2022 i3S which addresses a few issues including one you do not mention re Apple car play (which I have). As a U.K. city dweller with no regular family or work destinations beyond about 100 miles one way, this car is great and dirt cheap to run. US drivers I think do twice the European average miles per year so I can see why range is a bigger issue there. i3S has even lesser choice of tyres which is an emerging worry as they are bespoke. We need to lobby Michelin especially to compete with Bridgestone or literally zero choice. I actually find child seat access very easy in rear but rare to be stuck in a tight car park. i3S will beat most sport type cars to 30mph but I never push it as I am on an efficiency drive (we do get Sport mode). Plan to hold on to this partly as a future classic provided nothing too expensive happens to it!

The range extender controversy needs some context. It would be nice if commenters would indicate where they live. In Europe, with smaller, denser urban footprints; great inter-city train networks; and better charging infrastructure, the Rex may indeed be an unnecessary complication to be avoided. In many parts of North America (Australia, too?), range anxiety for traveling within and between sprawled out cities is a real and present problem. When you go to Los Angeles or Houston and people say "oh it's real close" and it's a 45 minute drive, you'll know what I'm talking about.

What kind of videos would you like to see? I'm not sure I have a lot more to say about it.. unless I start doing some mods to make it look better!

I wish you could park it with the REX charging the battery to 75% and then fill the tank again and drive off. The child seat is actually improved with the funny doors. Without wanting to explain it. Just steal some kids and try it. 😏

That would be pretty cool and you could kind of do it in a very backward way. You can turn on the emissions mode which involves opening a trunk and doing a few other steps which turns on the REx and runs it for 30 minutes charging up the battery. I'll find out about the child seat by the end of the year..

I bought a Rex because of your videos…so, thank you. I am having a problem with the sound in the car and was wondering if you have had this issue yet. No sound from radio or parking assist alerts. Do you have an advice.

Greetings from the U.K. I have (from new) a 2019 i3, it is the largest battery available (42kWh) and no REx, and I love this car. In an ideal world the range would be more, and the ride would be smoother. These are my only quibbles with this car. BTW, I still have the original Bridgestone tyres at 36k miles, so perhaps you push yours quite hard.

Curious what the state of your HV battery is like on a 2016... I own a 2014 REX and am getting on average less than 60 miles of electric range with mixed driving. Being in a CARB state, the HV warranty extends till early 2024, but I want to be on the safe side so I can avoid getting charged for the diagnostic test. Great video btw!

I did a video where I checked the HV battery, but right now I get about 65 miles in the summer with AC running, 75 with no AC. About 55-60 on the highway.

Love these - had 2 of the rex type and only way to go. Do miss that fun drive these offered. Currently in an smart eq which is pretty close without all the extra room - definitely recommend hacking the i3 for a better exprerience

I hope the 2 sets of tires I have will last me through the life of the car. I figured if both get about 15-20k miles, that would be enough.

I love my i3 too! Could you make a tutorial on changing the eme and kle if they fail? Bmw charges thousands to replace these.

I'll consider making a video about it, but I'm also a little concerned that if I touch them I WOULD actually have to replace them.

My daughter has one and I love it. We made a 400 mile trip on it and it was awesome to be able to just fill up every 70ish miles and continue on. I have a question though. I have not been able to find the needed socket size to change the oil. In a previous video you mentioned that the socket was a 5/16 triple square. Where did you buy it? I have searched all over hardware stores and online but no luck

Glad you are enjoying the car as well! I have made plenty of 100 mile 'trips' for another hobby of mine that's a state over and it's been great and CHEAP for that. As far as the socket, you can just get this HEX socket set and it will work: amzn.to/44i843P

Thank you so much. I’ll give it a try. I do love the car. Unfortunately I’m a truck guy and I need to haul/tow stuff from time to time, otherwise I’d get one myself!

I feel like it’s definitely split. It’s either, ‘wow cool unusual car, how do you like it?’ Or ‘what is that? Why does it look funny/like a toy car?’ I like it and drive it a lot when I don’t drive my Z4.
