BMW i3 AIRBAG FAULT Reset & Warranty Info

This video is about recent airbag fault, that I reset using bimmerlink. I later found out that for the error code triggered ( driver side steering wheel airbag resistance fault) I was eligible for repair under warranty with an extended service provided by BMW for 10yr/120K miles (in the US) for 2014-2016 model years (see date codes). So far, after resetting fault, error has not returned after 2+ weeks. If error returns, I will take to BMW for warranty repair.
Airbag wire harness routing issue (suspected problem per TSB) can be checked by removal of airbag with simple tools as shown in the attached video link as an example, but I do not recommend unless you are aware of the safety protocols, disable power (HV & 12V) & know what you are doing- Repair at your own risk, since this is an explosive device.

I had this exact problem with my 2014 Rex, took it to the dealer and showed him your two bmw warranty pages and voila its now considered under warranty and won't charge me a dime. Thanks for these videos!

Our local dealer said there is no extended warranty. I contacted the BMW Customer Service and they said the 10 year warranty is in place, but only for one part of the system. Unfortunately, it costs $310 to have it checked at the dealer. An independent shop said it would likely cost $1500 at their shop.

Update. It's me again. We went to a different dealer. They sitll wanted $300 up front (for diagnosis), but they found that the problem was covered by the Extended Warranty so we get that back AND the new air bag is covered, too. Good luck to others.

How did you look at the codes? What did you use?

I used the bimmerlink app to chek the fault codes. It's easy as long as you have the app and an OBD reader.

I have a Mercedes C320 that had the air bag triggered intermittently, and no one could figure it out. I finally got it fixed by replacing the heater control unit...of all things.. It turned out that the communication to the unit would intermittently lose connection from some loose/corroded pins from a back plate to the circuit board, that would then trigger a communications fault that then set a non recoverable airbag fault! Drove me crazy for years... My guess for your fault could be the passenger occupancy switch or loose/ corroded/ bumped underseat connectors are the first places to look, without more information. I did the same thing. I cleared it and wish I didn't! I first went to BMW and they wanted almost 300 to see if this was covered or not. Has yours come back?

Mine shows 2x last few days. Pulled over twice off the car it dissappear. But can i still drive the car on freeway if this code shows up? Is this critical like i should visit bmw for it asap?

If it is due to the driver side air bag, the fault will not disappear without being cleared by using an ODB reader (like bimmerlink). You may need to check which codes are being triggered using the OBD reader to narrow down the cause. I have heard if the seats get wet you can trigger a fault that can go away when they dry (maybe rainy?), and also check the connectors under the seat (some owners have said that they created a problem by putting something under the seat). From a safety standpoint, having the airbag functional is best. Thanks for watching!
