Very interesting aspect after driving several cars, to have this cleared: There are several Philosophies as for the recuperation and one-pedal-driving or not. VW e-Golf: Free Sailing possible (like in neutral gear), four different recuperation modes, recuperation possible via the brakes (until max. recuperation is achieved, then normal brakes apply) Kia Soul EV: D-Mode just slight recuperation, harder recuperation mode, recuperation possible via the brakes (until max. recuperation is achieved, then normal brakes apply) BMW i3 & Tesla (Model X / S): Always recuperation when leaving the throttle, different modes available, but braking system separately without any effect on recuperation!

I have leased this car since last September. My range in temperate weather in comfort mode is 124 miles. I have a Rex, the petrol range is an additional 75 miles. I received $9500 in government subsidies and an additional 30% gov't subsidy to install a home charger. I love the silence of the ride. The standard sound system is great as no engine noise interferes. This is a very versatile interior design as well. I love it.

Wait... what??? When did animal skin become non-sustainable? Does that word mean something different in Europe. I'm a Vegan but I'd never say that leather was non-sustainable. In any case, this is one of the best review videos I've seen in quite a while. Most reviews are trying to be overly objective, or ridiculously subjective. Your step-by-step observation based approach is very well done and more informative than normal. It really makes the viewer feel like he (or she) is there with you and you're just pointing out things that are notable. I'd gladly go car shopping with you any time. In fact, I just ran up to a local BMW dealership and test drove a REX after watching this video. Very impressive. Thanks.

I have it (2017) and I love it! I hope that BMW continues to extend the range with future versions. Will never buy another ICE car again. I do have the REx but so far only used it just to see what it was like and the transition was seamless. I highly recommend this car.

When I first saw it, I really didn't like the design. But now I love it. It's so distinctive and it looks brand new even after years on the market. And those wheels are so ugly they're cool. I would get them for the efficiency and comfort. But they do sell cooler looking ones for people who want to prioritise the look.

I think they styled the base alloys so that we'd feel we had to pay the extra for the nice alloys... thus bumping the average sale price. I bought two sets of the turbine alloys... it was not cheap.

IMO, as a whole package, this is still one of the best EVs on sale, at least for the city, but I think the range extender is still the way to go, and is what makes this a unique proposition. It will be interesting to see its replacement and also to compare it to Tesla's Model Y. However, as a used EV, I think the i3 is very hard to beat, all things considered. Just, as a package, it offers so much. Compact, nippy, semi-command driving position, easy access, practical, etc. Maybe a bit compromised in the back for larger adults, especially on longer journeys, but that's about it. Speed compromised on the German Autobahn, but for other countries it enables travelling at the speed limit. Styling-wise, I think it grows on you. It's certainly different, and in an increasingly bland automotive space, I think different is good. Interior seems a particularly nice place to be.

I went to BMW in France to test the i3 and I had the feeling they were not very interested in selling it. It was dirty and hidden around the back of the showroom. They couldn't tell me if there was any benefit tax wise from the French government. They really wanted me to buy a normal BMW. I shall wait for you to do a test on the new Opel Ampera-E which sounds like a much better proposition.

The batteries weigh more than the engine. That's why they use the rex.I'm not here to save the world one mile at a time so I appreciate that they use the rex. I would not have purchased this vehicle if it was full electric

@Thomas, your reviews are great and so is your English. I have enjoyed watching your videos for some time now, but I noticed that you make the same 2 mistakes in most of your videos. 1) overview --> visibility 2) those --> these. We generally say: "visibility is good" or "visibility is limited when looking out of the rear window" etc. "Overview" is used in place of 'summary' (Zusammenfassung) OR when looking down on something from above such as a map or a city from a tall building. We use "those" when something is far away or abstract, but when you are standing near them, for example when referring to the headlights, then refer to them as these: "these LED headlights are optional, not standard equipment". Again, your English is very good and I really enjoy the videos. I don't want to be the grammar police, but I noticed that you make the same mistakes consistently, so I thought I would point them out to you. :)

Great review as always, many thanks. You asked for our comments! Interesting that you say at 32:48, when driving, “you feel yourself younger again…” A nice - but expensive car. I liked the interior. Last year, we drove a battery-only 19-inch wheel version for a fortnight, and the ride was too firm for me, and especially at slow speeds around town, or on back roads. I guess perhaps it may be the age-old compromise where go-kart handling and soft compliant suspensions do not mix very well, especially in a small car.

I've driven the REX version of this a few months ago. I LOVE the acceleration and interior. I'm not 100% sold on the exterior though. The regen braking was a bit too much for me. There should be some dial to reduce it. I definitely recommend the cloth seats, the fabric and texture fit better with the other materials in the interior.

I think it is the second review of BMW i3. I can repeat my comment. There is a NDR video where the BMW CEO tells the production costs are a half of BMW 1!!! The price is driven by the choice of premium class choice only! This car was designed to reduce the CO2 level of the whole BMW car fleet and not really to be a big car seller success.

I thought I posted the video link under an older BMW i3 video from you...but I cannot find it anymore ;-(( I think BMW must investigate much more than a bigger battery...to bring the BMW i3 on a Tesla level...the current BMW hybrid way is very expensive and complex, the effort and money is better investigated in full e-driven car...but BMW is a big player in the german Car lobby...same status like weapons lobby in USA...the managers will not see that the time is running and a "Nokia risk" is visible at the horizon for german car builder...Cheers DrDuu

I'm 61 and before retirement I was involved in the design and development of an electric vehicle (not a passenger one). We are at a stage that a lot of vehicles are being produced using recycled materials and built in carbon neutral factories. Taking into account the cost of building these factories, recycling the materials and everything else (R&D, design, etc). We are not seeing any benefit to the customer - i.e. Prices are still rising. Yes, we are still in early adopter phases of EV's, but we should now be in the area of prices coming down (remember the huge prices for small flat screen TV's), but we close. Until we are, we are not seeing any significant increase in sales.

Great review! Didn't like these i3's at first, but now I'm starting to like them. The issue is the range though. They would say low range is fine for city driving, but then you are more likely to have to park on the street where you can't so easily do charging if you live in the city. If the range was more like 200-250 miles then it would be perfect for suburban owners who can charge while parked on their driveway, or in their garage, each night. Look forward to an i3 with a bigger battery! Man, what's up with all the graffiti in Germany?! Looks terrible - last time I was there in 2008 it was so clean everywhere.

I think that the full potential of series hybrid concept will be unleaded only after the advent of free piston linear generator range extenders and capacitor banks working alongside batteries to produce the juice. And if 0 emission tag is the reason for those tiny RE fuel tank then that should go too to allow a real 50L fuel tank. Afterall the car would still be an ultra low emission one.

A convenient feature I find lacking is the no reverse creep effect upon reversing ! This means reversing into tight areas need more care to avoid 'over shooting' from pressing accelerator too much ?!

Wenn du keine riesige Reichweite brauchst, kannst du dir auch extremst günstig einen gebrauchten e-Golf oder i3 holen, also die vor dem Reichweiten-Update. Da gibts welche mit vierstelliger Kilometerzahl für gut 20.000 Euro.

One of the biggest improvement is, the 3-Phase Charging. Finally 11kW 3-Phase much better than 7kW with one Phase. But 22kW AC + CCS would be the best. :) I kinda like the i3 :)

Rating electric cars in Ah is pointless. always kWh please :D The car was something special in 2013, but right now its not up to date. Ampera-e and the Tesla S (60) have double the capacity. Paying 37000€ for the 94Ah/30kWh version is way too much. The batteries cost only around 6000€.

Quick question: why is leatherette considered 'sustainable', and animal leather not sustainable when the former is made from non-sustainable oil, while the latter can and is sustainably grown every time we get beef in the store? Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. As a start, please tune in to what the animal leather industry tried to do here with our channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pIHCdKmCocZ5oqs In general, depending on the animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat would be the reason no.1 in other cases, the hide remains one of the most profitable body parts. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you accept it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and destroys the environment, you make them more profitable. Also, if you turn the argument around "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize how biased the argument is. After all, would you care for which exact body part you would be murdered? Or imagine someone robs you on the street and beats you to death - would it matter to you if it was for your Smartphone or for your purse? The animal agriculture industry occupies 2/3 of all farm land on this planet which cannot be used for direct human nutrition then. That is extremely inefficient. The no.1 cause for deforestation is the animal industry. It is also one of the biggest contributor to climate change. The amount of land, resources, energy and water being used is beyond imagination. For the alternative, you can either use artificial fabrics which can be made from recyclables (we have already shown a lot of vehicles that use great fabric seats from PET-bottles etc.) or more and more also from plant-based materials (like Pinatex). And even if you would create a seat completely with petroleum without a recycling share, the amount of oil being used for that is nothing in comparing just to once fueling up your car. In practical reasons, fabric or microfibre seats are just more useful. You do not sweat in summer and it is not cold in winter. And if you want the slick look or something to wipe clean easier, that is possible with animal free leatherette. Using animal skin on seats is a major issue of animal rights, human rights - and after all it is just common sense what is better both for the environment and just more practical and more luxurious for the customer. We cannot change what we have bought in the past (that also counts for ourselves of course!), but with more information and compassion we can change how we decide in the future.

Question: Is an electric car with a range extender in fact a hybrid and not a true electric car? F.e. in countries where there's a difference in taxing hybrids vs electric cars? Interesting piece of trivia: Apparently for these I-cars, BMW uses cows that they keep in farms around the factory, from the point of sustainability. At least that's what the salesman told me when I went to the dealership for this car. I should've asked if they did this also for the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, X1/2/3/5, and all the Z-series as well, or that those series nullify the effect that's really just there for pr reasons... Pity that they didn't invest in fake leather or just cancelled it out. Although, maybe that would've made the car even more costly. Interesting that Thomas said that it's a good thing that there's no middle tunnel in front of the beverage holder, but what's the advantage there? I'd rather have it that they used it for f.e. storage space (ok, I guess you could put a bag or something there).

You'd actually love it. Have had mine 6 mo and its a blast to drive. And can go all day without running out of electric. And it you do have an extra long day the gas generator kicks in. Plug it in and ready to go the next day.

also please do not compare animals to trees. That's very insensible towards all the animals. Plus, factory farmin is the main source of deforestation. So by sparing animals, you save more trees than with anything else you could possibly do. Trees are mainly being cut for mass food crops production fields for fattened animals, not because of direction use of trees for wood products. 2/3 of all agricultural land on this world is pevertly used to grow food for the animals we eat, not directly for humans.

The dark trim wood is Oak btw... The light wood is eucalyptus sourced from certified sustainable sources. It's nice it weathers slightly over time and gives each car a different character.

It needs the ability to selectively turn off the aggressive regen braking. That feature is great in stop and go traffic, but a pain to get used to. I'm sure several people will sing the praises of the design and insist that they got used to it full time and love it, but that's stull no excuse for not offering the flexibility just like the other guys.

In the future, the interior of the cars is giong to be vastly revised. Currently, the car interiors are bulky, plasticky and more or less predictable. Voluminous dashboards-consoles, massive middle tunnels, plastic everywhere, less space, uninspiring cabins. This one i3 perhaps gives us a glimpse on the future deisgn cues, however its interior space is not as wisely exploitable as it could.

In Hungary, we have green plates. All the characters are the same, but the background of the plates is pained green. Kinda ugly in my opinion, and something you have to take into consideration when picking the color of the car.

the suspension doesn't look comfortable at all, in the camera I see often a vibration and going over even little potholes I see a strong shaking AND heare a rattle! Moreover a review of an electric car without an at least 50 km ride on a motorway with 130 km/h is no in-depth car review as after this 50 km trip you could see how the batteries perform, is the power/acceleration reducing then(?), are the batteries getting hot after a certain time with 130 km/h (?), (I saw this with a tesla x when suddenly the fans were running really high to cool the batteries and they stayed hot even for a quite long time at a stop at a motorway service station). And you didn't show properly in which ways the info system shows the rest-range, the charging situation etc. Tesla offers endless variations of calculations around the left range and charging and consuption situation and shows where the next charging stations are. Just showing a remaining range of x km wouldn't be enough, as it depends on your destination, means if you will go on the motorway again or through a city with stop and go etc. Tesla calculates this together with your planed trip at the satnav. And... different displays during the charging process... How many of this functions have the BMW? How do they look? Very important if you test an electric car. All not said, but x times you talked about the look of the car or the gokart feeling... Change your topics if you test el. cars, please!

i like what bmw are trying to do, break into the ev market, but the i3 i think has a way to go yet. i think the price needs to be on par with the i3's direct competitor, the model 3 from tesla, and it needs to look as good as the model 3.

I'm wondering if some car companies design their electric vehicles so strange and uncommon on purpose, so that nobody buys them and goes for the combustion engines instead. If all electric vehicles looked like this, I'm pretty sure it would mean the end of the "electrification".

In Summer 2017, Tesla motors has decided to be the first manufacturer to go all the way with sustainable seat materials, only offering fabric/cloth seats or leatherette seats in different colours. They have banned all real leather from the seating surface and at the steering wheel in the white trim or on demand. So Tesla shows where the industry will and must be heading, just like they went forward with electrification first. Check out our special video addressing car CEOs as a first summary and also see conditions of animal skin production: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gn-2hq2Qjd-jmsU List of practical reasons against animal skin seats: 1. animal skin seats are often sold as an expensive option, by going for base trim level seats you can save a lot of money and get a better price-performance-deal (often the manufacturers claim that animal leather is top of luxury because they can earn the best money with it) 2. animal skin seats get hot in summer and you stick to the seat, probably you need seat cooling 3. they get very cold in winter and you need seat heating 4. on cloth or microfibre surfaces, you basically don’t need seat heating nor cooling 5. animal skin seats wear out very fast and look like an old sofa 6. if you want leather look or need seats that can be wiped clean easier, the leatherette (faux leather) surfaces are meanwhile highly evolved and it is possible that it feels even softer and better than anything else (See our Tesla Model X review kzbin.info/www/bejne/r2Paf3p8gMZng5I) So Tesla shows a good example for that and as described, non-leather materials are now standard for ALL Tesla 7. More manufacturer names for their good alternatives: Mercedes MBTex/Artico for leatherette, Dinamica for microfibre. BMW Sensatec, Toyota Sof-Tex, Lexus Nu-Luxe (all faux leather) To the environmental reasons: 1. The way the cows and other intelligent and social animals are raised and held are not according to the basic values that we all share (also see videos below) 2. The factory farming industry can be accounted for at least 40 % of climate emissions and thus is (according to numerous sources you can look up) the number one reason for climate change and environmental destruction. It is the number one reason for deforestation, two thirds of all agricultural land on earth is used for growing animal food crops. If you would feed humans directly by using the agricultural land, you could produce much more food for everyone. It is not only cows who are suffering, but also the environment and to a big part also humans. Think of slavery-like working conditions in slaughterhouses (there are plenty of documentaries about this) or think of chemically altered drinking water in animal skin production villages as also seen in the video footage. 4. The discussion, for which body part the cow is killed first, is very patronizing. But if you really think it would be important why someone gets killed in first place: There are many productions where the cow is killed for the skin first, sometimes even while still being (part-)alive, the skin is the most profitable single part of the body. 5. So even if a cow gets theoretically killed for meat first, in every case you give additional money to an industry that relies on killing, pollutes the environment and harms people with chemicals. Let's say you are standing at the meat counter. And you ask for the leg of the cow. The butcher tells you: "You can eat that without worrying, the cow was slaughtered for the neck first". The next customer demands the neck. The butcher tells him: "It's not your fault, the cow was slaughtered for the belly". A the next customer demands the hide, what answer does he get? You see, that argument of "byproduct" comes from the meat and leather industry to cover up that you contribute to killing no matter which part of the body you buy. 6. To the often said argument, animal skin would just be a byproduct, please google/youtube "leather is not a byproduct" you will find plenty of information. A good overview on all those issues can also be found here: adaptt.org/ To “But leatherette is not sustainable due to petrochemical production” 1. Indeed some fabrics and micro fibres are oil based, however most oil is spent on energy production, heating and fuel. The share of oil used for artificial cloth etc. is very very small. 2. If you look at the whole production process, the leatherette is way more sustainable than the leather produce. Even if you leave the ethical aspect aside, here is the official calculation of the CO2-Output animal skin vs leatherette (different kinds of leatherette): Leather 17 kg CO2/m² PVC leatherette 10 kg CO2/m² Acella Eco natural leatherette 8,5 kg CO2/m² Benova (PUR leatherette): 8 kg CO2/m² So by using the latest high-tech leatherette, you even the CO2-emissions are cut in half! 3. The best to-come solution are indeed plant-based materials like Pinatex (based on pineapple leaves) or new materials based on mycelia (roots of mushrooms) or other innovative natural products. Manufacturers reactions: We started the very first inquiry years ago, with the result that car manufacturers do not reveal their sources of animal skin AT ALL. If it all would be clean and happening without harm, why don’t they show it to us whereas they are showing us every other detail of their products? They have good reason not to, because there is no such thing as a clean animal skin production without harming cows, humans and the environment. The only thing a manufacturer can do is increase their effort for a better future, and we are helping with in-depth talks and interviews by presenting the increasing customer demand for sustainable luxury. Tesla was the first one to react in a major way now. So meanwhile, we more often also get feedback that a lot of manufacturers are working on leather-free interiors and are aware of the situation. E.g. Bentley, Mini and Kia have started vegan car interior programmes. Besides Tesla, Mercedes already shows major choices for sustainable interiors, you always have to pay attention to the details when ordering, of course - and we are happy to give advice. It feels like BMW ruined a potentially perfect car by choosing some really bad solutions: 1. The back doors ruin the car. They are uncomfortable for the back passengers. It's almost impossible to get out of the car in a supermarket parking lot. 2. The pure EV versions have the same luggage compartment size as the range extender versions. There is a lot of wasted space under the boot floor, where the petrol engine used to be. 3. The front luggage compartment could have been bigger and better built. They chose some cheap plastic bin which gives you a feeling of lack of quality. 4. There are some places inside the car where wear appears faster then you would expect. For a car starting at a bit under 40.000 EUR, there are still a lot of things that need improvement.

The cow dies in order for them to harvest the skin. It's not like it sheds the skin for it to grow back so you can reharvest it. The skin is the product, not the cow, so in that sense it's not sustainable.

Mgoblagulkablong they could probably match the capacity of Zoe,, but than the cost of car would rise and BMW would not make enough profit (or can't sell cheap enough the old model ), but when model 3 start selling in thousands units a month , BMW better be ready to update i3 or else they will never catch up to Tesla, as right now BMW sales is losing sales at about 14% on month to month , compared to last year sales . so they are behind already , time to think quick BMW ?...

There's a new battery being announced with the refreshed i3 in September that will bump the pack into the 40kWh-class. Also note the i3 is more efficient (by about 10%), almost 300kg lighter, RWD, has almost double the motor power (65kW vs 125kW)...2.5X power to weight and.... drives like a BMW. There's a big difference in build quality too.... The Zoe is a bit...tinny and superminish.

It has about 25kW more motor power but it's front wheel drive and doesn't handle as well. I drove a production intent one in the US last year. The range is great though... and I prefer the infotainment system to idrive... mainly 'cause it has android auto. Seats on the Ampera-e are really uncomfortably thin....
