I seriously considered a used Zoe when they were many available for under 5k , which is amazing value , unfortunately the price has gone up recently , the new Zoe is a big improvement , especially inside , it is considered to be the best small electric car at the moment with an acclaimed 245 mile range. The I3 and original Leaf look too weird on the outside but at least they have a better interior than the Renault. Fantastic to see Peter on your channel , he is such a great presenter , i hope there will be more collaborations in upcoming videos !. I wish everyone the best of health at this difficult time.

In my 22kwh Zoe I could get 90 miles in the summer and 70 miles in the winter (yus I got the software update). My regular 120 round trip took 2 x 20 mins top ups on motorway or 1 x 40 mins and careful driving speeds (62-65mph). My new Nissan Leaf 2020 can do almost 200 miles urban driving and 120 miles motorway (normally propilot cruising at 65mph). I've driven both cars over 200 miles in one sitting, the Zoe would charge at 22kw on a rapid AC charger on the motorway and the Leaf 40-50kw on Chademo (DC). Perhaps Tiff and co should borrow a Jag IPace, Model 3 and Leaf 40kWh for 1 month and be forced to ONLY drive these vehicles. They should have home chargers, but for fun, no home charging for the Tesla due to Supercharger network. Make them do a 500 mile trip 4 times within the month. They'll soon get better. Nothing worse was watching Hammond on DriveTribe reversing the Model X ignoring the large screen reverse camera and peeking his little face over his shoulder.... Oh and checking SOH with an app is required as I can reset most counters in EVs to give their most optimistic mileage .... Forget it. Look at 3-4 miles per kW available to your vehicle unless you're into hypermiling...
@patrickgraham6786
@patrickgraham6786 4 жыл бұрын
this is very true - and an indicator of the residual lack of seriousness in the typical petrol head approach to electric vehicles. I used to own a Renault that told me it had half a tank of petrol left having gone 180m from full - then it would quickly drop to warning light and about 25 miles range left after another 30 miles or so... This is more worryingly inaccurate than the worst 2nd hand EV... but - because of petrol stations, we don't worry... The filling station network took many decades to become the dense infrastructure that ICE drivers take for granted today. It won't take as long before we find that a mix of home charging and things such as street lamp-based pubic plug points = much more secure than petrol.

Would have loved to see how much percentage was left on each car and not just the estimated range. Would have made it easier to see just how much energy they actually used on the 19 mile trip.

I am debating between leaf, volt and i3bmw to use it pretty much in town. work comute is about 50-60 miles every day round trip...the thing is that I don't have space in garage to park car. It will be park on driveway. Iam wondering how would I charge Nissan leaf or i3 BMW. The volt can be charge on any regular outlet in about 12 hours cause of smaller battery. I wonder if I can use extension cords for leaf or i3bmw if I park it in driveway?? Maybe install charger in the back or on the side of outside of garage and run cable from there to charge EV in driveway?? However I first need to know which car to get. I will be trading my 2009 Prius do to catalic converter getting stolen all the time here in California. I added a shield but that's just a deterrent

On the downside - I charge DAILY at public chargers when I return home with an almost depleted battery .( Im a physician doing house visits and average almost 200km daily) But I compare leaving the car a 20min walk away from home - as daily after work excercise ..like walking a dog . The REX I have used on some 10 occasions in 6 months and it does give me peace of Mind. The car is not an autobahn bullet to compete with R.Rovers or Porsches . Its just a GREAT commuting and CITY car . My best friends have also recently bought a used i3 . I had a similar Zoe to the one in the video. Whilst £19k was the advertised price there were so many discounts that I had mine over a 2 year PCP for 10k miles at £78.88 a month with a battery lease of £80 a month. Total cost (£1893.12 + £1920) = £3813.12. At the end of PCP I could have bought the car for £4442. So a total cost of £8255.12. So your £8 price is not far off what I could have bought it for in March 2018. My last Zoe which I parted with actually made money giving me (at 2 years old) £3500 deposit for my current MG ZS EV.

@@maxthomson2023 Quite an improvement over the Zoe in many ways and not so good in a few others. The ride and comfort is better in the MG along with a lot more space. I can get the seat into a proper position without having the need to sit on 2 cushions, which I had to do in Zoe. Love MG Pilot it's always make me think of Teslas when I put it on and at a fraction of the price. Range and timer charging are the downs against the Zoe, but neither is much of a problem.

the reason the range went down hard to start with then back up was because you probably didn't preheat the cars whilst charging. Heating up the car initially uses a lot of power, maintaining the temperature of the cabin once up to temp takes very little power

I went from BMW 3 series Touring to i3 September 2019. Best decision I ever made, not just a fun car with zero emissions in use, but very low running costs - if you do 15-18k miles a year, the fuel savings will almost pay for the car! That's assuming you can charge overnight at home on an off-peak tariff. Thought I would miss the practicality of the 3 series Touring, but with the seats down, the i3 is pretty spacious and so far I have not missed having an estate car.

Not bad, but I do wish presenters would learn about their cars first. Most of those cars use previous driving to predict future range, so unless they know how it was driven you can’t rely on its estimate - and this nothing to do with degradation. Also, the Zoe blends brake pedal and regen, so you need to press the brake lightly to get regen.

No Renault Zoe here in the states but it's closest to my 2016 Chevy Spark EV I bought in Sept 2020 w/12K miles for $12K and have been really enjoying it. Because it has a small battery pack it's EPA rated for 82miles on a full charge it is not a long distance driver which is a shame since it's a blast to drive with 140hp and 327lb ft (443Nm) I want drive it everywhere. I think used EVs are a great way to see what they are all about. I'm retired but my drive to work was approx 22miles round trip so with this car even taking drives to get lunch I'd be charging on 110v overnight every third day. Yep, perfect 2nd car, or 3rd car in my case (my previous daily driver is a 2016 Pontiac GTO (Vauxhall Manaro) w/6sp)), I bought new in January 2017, which is now my car cruise vehicle. Some pretty awesome EVs coming out but out of my price range so by all means, used EVs are useful, pleasant vehicles that can bring a smile to your face almost as much as driving an old Austin Healy 3000 with a fully synchronized 4sp.....😆 🤣

I run a company owned Golf diesel and it is brilliant…70mpg on a run but the UK Government are determined to get ICE vehicles off the road so I have got to give EV’s some serious thought for when I retire in a few years. I would not need anything that is super fast or flash…just something decent that both my wife and I would be happy with. I’m quite interested in the MG5 and I recently watched a test drive of the Ora Cat I think it was called…that was very nice.

a "scientific" test would have driven cars till the battery was flat. You can't use the predicting range because that's determined by how the car has been driving prior to this test. This is why some cars' range increased.
@jeremy1548

Tiff is very confused. The range estimate on the GOM is nothing to do with battery degradation! Some cars are better at estimating available range and that applies to ICE cars as well. 840,000 people run out petrol and diesel in the UK every year.

Saying "30kW battery" is like saying "300 horsepower fuel tank", it's kWh (kilowatt hour), might sound pedantic but it honestly is less confusing once everyone understands it because when you say "30kw battery and 80kw motor" it doesn't make sense. But I like how Tiff was forward thinking enough to know how to and also wanted to do the test properly despite the others not wanting to... Yes there needs to be real world testing as well but then you aren't testing battery degradation! To test battery degradation you need to see how much worse the battery performs now vs when new under the *same conditions* and if you are only using the manufacturers range claims to compare against, you really have to do as tiff did and go without heating, test at 20C, etc as they would've done to come up with that claim.

The i3 just disappeared and I bet they were just setting off as normal not flooring it. Only way to remotely keep up would require a full on boy racer drag racing start but if you start normally, wait to see what other traffic is doing, see that there's room to go for it and then go for it, the i3 is in the next street before the fiesta engine even comes on boost and all without breaking the speed limit :P

You could make exactly the same point regarding cobalt mining, which the oil companies have been engaged in for decades. They need cobalt to remove sulphur during the refining process..... The main advantage an EV offers is that the battery can be recycled at the end of it's useful life, and the lithium and cobalt within can be recycled and recovered to around 90%. Burned petrol and diesel cannot be recycled and reused.....

The problem is, you can buy a 64 plate Clio Diesel now for £4,300 with under 50,000 miles on the clock and with FSH, which will average 70mpg in winter and over 80mpg during the summer. It’s not that slow either, 0-60 in 11.3 and 118mph top speed. Oh and its Tax exempt too. Diesels arent as popular as they were a couple of years ago, but with a modern diesel car, once you mull over the numbers they still make a lot of sense.

I own an I3 with about 85,000km on the clock. there does not seem to be any range degradation yet. I drive it about 90km per day, and it has worked pretty much flawlessly. For the negatives, the tyes wear down quickly because they are so thin, and because I have the range extender it is more expensive to service when compared to the electric-only variant. The car is zippy, fun to drive, and i certainly would recommend one.

@xiaowei1
@xiaowei1 4 жыл бұрын
@@Nobody_Famous no, i have not played around with the hidden menu. the range however seems to be just as much as when i got it (second hand with 12k on the clock). I tried to hold out as long as i could on changing the tyres, but they just had to be changed at 65,000 km (i should have probably changed them at about 50,000km). The i3 is a great car to drive though, and i would recommend them.

@@MarkGaudie Well not in the UK at least :). However most people don't buy the top spec. So the price difference is quite large when compared base spec to base spec. EVs are in my opinion the cars to buy if the range is not an issue or it would be functioning as a citycar for shorter journeys. Here in Finland, the nissan Leaf base starts at 38k€, BMW i3 starts at 43k€ and the Renault Zoe starts at 29k€. However the Seat Mii electric for 18k€ would be very tempting if I had a need for a second car.

Range extender on i3 - which I have is brilliant. I have driven probably near 20k miles and needed range extender only a few times - and just few hundred miles. Reckon I've used only a few gallons of petrol in 2 years. But when I needed it was Godsend I admit. The charging infrastructure in UK is pretty crappy and patchy and I would have been stuck for potentially hours on a slow charge on long road trip more than once without the extender. The i3 is fanatastic car. By contrast Electric Highway - courtesy Ecotricity - sucks. Big time!. Go and do one Dale Vince. You are damaging the transition to a sustainable electric car world in a horribly effective way. If I could I would take your OBE and shove it where your New AGe sun don't shine.

My thoughts exactly and whilst it is the case that most recent Zoes have ‘owned batteries’ I think that nine months ago they would have been hard pushed to find a 65 plate Renault Zoe for £8k without a leased battery. Still checking Autotrader today in Jan 2020 I found at least one example with owned battery on a 15 plate for about £8,300. That is not bad value for a car with official 130 mile range and quick charge capability.

Incorrect about the Leaf, it wasn't the first affordable EV and it doesn't have the title of the most units sold, that's Tesla, according to Tesla's data which I doubt they can fudge, tesla are also sellling many more units than Nissan now so the discrepancy will increase significantly.

guessometers are useless, my leaf was always predicting incorrectly and hugely optimistically. My Outlander was doing the same but a bit less incorrectly. The end result, sold both. Leaf - battery pack too small for everyday use. Ok for around 80% of trips, but then not suitable for a longer trips at all. Even with rapid chargers, that adds enormous time to the trip. (60mi reliable range, 40mi in winter) So bought Outlander PHEV - what a mistake. with 25 mi real world EV range, no point to charge on rapid chargers at all and charging at home to gain 1 way of journey, having all that tech which eventually will start breaking... and nowhere near as powerful or nice to drive as pure EV. So go for an EV with at least 60 kWh. I wouldn't even consider anything below 80kWh. Then its a real car which is way superior to ICE, but without the capacity its just not that nice to live with. Let's see whether CyberT will be the answer. Although parking that tank may be a bit of a problem ... for the other road users.

The cost of the battery lease is a potential issue for some on the Zoe, the Leaf is truly ugly but as a budget entry into the EV experience, both are potentially interesting, realistic propositions. The i3 is too expensive (as tested) for cheap entry into EV motoring and would come close to a lease of something else - like a new Ioniq, MG, New Zoe - all with much better range than EVs past and much more usable as primary cars and not as a 2nd car.

Scientific and relying om gom? Tiff really has no clue wat he is talking about. Only tesla uses an absolute for the battery indicator, you have to count consumptie allong so if you drive more economical the range wil go up just liken in a petrol car. Look at TCO the leaf is dirt cheap. Except it is the 2013+ 24kwh that is cheaper if you do NOT need the range or much faster fastcharging. The 30kwh leaf is fine for longer distances. Do check the soh with leafspy before buying. The i3 is indead too expensive, the zoe with battery lease is too expensive compared to a 24 kWh leaf.
