I think that Tesla will always be ahead in terms of effeciency. BMW along with other luxury brands didn't always have the best MPG but that didn't matter for many because they would top up the fuel and costs generally didn't matter. However for an EV effeciency matters because range is reduced and charging times are longer than refueling times. Maybe one day if the legacy brands invest all of their r & d money into EV's then it may start to catch up I guess.

Hey Richard, nice and and honest review, very detailed and very useful! 👍 I'd suggest you to take a closer look at the iX3. The car is surprisingly good, regardless of its "hybrid" platform, that supports both ICE and BEV cars. The iX3 has a more rear-biased weight distribution, which makes it fun to drive in corners (you have to push it though to get the feeling - unless you do, it's just a very comfortable car). I'm not a fan of SUVs, but I actually find iX3 very practical. 360⁰ cam is a good help for precision parking at charging stations, etc. It's kind of a car that doesn't shine or have a killer argument for it - but it's basically almost faultless, and the whole package makes it a really, really good car!

Nice, you noticed the lack of space around the pedals. Since they have the accelerator attached to the bottom, and not top, you cant rest your foot under that. And then it gets cramped. I think it´s the cars biggest flaw to be honest, and something I am really considering to be a deal breaker. The car has maybe the best driver assistent system of all ev´s, so it´s shame if you can sit relaxing on the highway, and let the car do the driving. Great that you demonstrated the use of phone as a key, haven´t seen others do that, gj :)

I had a test drive in the i4, potentially as a replacement to my 3 yr old Tesla Model 3. I liked it in lots of ways, but like Richard found, I was really disappointed in the sound system. I've spent too long on previous cars doing audio upgrades to remedy deficiencies in the base system and really don't want to get into that sort of thing again. On the wider question of the car itself, I found its efficiency worse than the Model 3. I drive fairly conservatively these days and get around 250Wh/mi out of the Tesla in summer. On the i4 (the RWD, non M model), I was up to 290Wh/mi driving in a similar way. On the plus side though, I thought the BMW's ride was much better than the Tesla, and it's much quieter, and the build quality feels much improved. However, price and lead time really make it a bit of a non-starter for me so if I do replace the Model 3, it'll be another Tesla.
@pqvid2 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul, do your numbers (250Wh/m vs 290Wh/m) come from the dash trip stats or from your own measurements? I had both Tesla Model 3 and a BMW (iX3, not i4) - and what I discovered was that BMW's BC was spot on, while with Tesla, if I multiply the number of kilometers driven with the consumption, and then compare it to the actual consumed percentage of the battery, there's quite a gap. 10-15% easily! I don't even think that Tesla was trying to hide something, it probably depends on how you measure it. It could even be, that BMW uses the simplest method - look at how much battery we lost, that's how much energy we spent! While Tesla tries to actually measure all the energy used in different places, and then misses something like the heat build-up due to the internal battery resistance, which is basically impossible to measure from the outside. But the difference is there. BMW is probably still a bit more thirsty, as in all comparisons it runs a shorter distance than the Model 3, while having a larger battery. But I believe the difference is much closer than the numbers suggest.
@pqvid2 жыл бұрын
The delivery times are a shame though, I agree with you... :(
@paulkaye50762 жыл бұрын
@@pqvid Yes - it was just using the on board computers' stats. I've never done a detailed calibration of the Tesla's consumption reading, let alone the BMW's, so I accept that these numbers can't necessarily be relied on.

Ok so I usually do this - compare like with like - Tesla Model 3 Performance comes in at £60,500. This similarly specced BMW is a whopping £69,850. Less range, less space, no superchargers, lower warranty, service schedule required (cannot forget to pay those stealerships). No OTA 210kw max charging, No frunk, re-purposed ICE car with pointless transmission tunnel. On the plus side, that extra ten grand does get you some rubber on the dashboard and unimpressive hifi. I really don't know who would get this over a Model 3 performance. I suppose it would give you some exclusivity?
@KDR8162 жыл бұрын
Is it with FSD and white seats? edrive40 is almost the same price (and BMW gave me 4k discount! So it's cheaper than TM3) has a comparable range (450-500 km without any limit), frunk for 250€, enough space for 4 adults, much better feeling, look, and comfort. Adding options is annoying, but you should find 30 minutes to do it as it's a significant amount of money. As an advantage you can spec much much more (towing rack, seat ventilation,..etc) Who buys Tesla if you can buy a better BMW for the same money. I cannot blame people eating at McDonald's, it's their choice There is an OTA, 210KW is enough, why is the peak power so important? Top peak power at Tesla is just to write it in the specsheet, in real life it's just for a couple of minutes

@@KDR816 Like you say, some people will pay for a badge, some won't. What BMW need to get on with is making EVs, not retro fitting ICE. Because whether you like them or not, Tesla will sell over a million EVs this year alone. They outsell BMW 2 to 1 in the USA as it is, and that's not just EVs, that everything- oil burners, the lot. Of course if BMW like the rest of the German Auto Industry still believe their A-Team need to be making diesels, then they are doomed. What is so disappointing is BMW are genuinely capable of making an incredible EV, they just don't want to. They dole out second rate tat 5 years too late.

The automatic windshield wipers that are totally useless in my M3 and Y LR are reason enough to avoid Tesla. They will wipe for minutes over a celan, dry windshield on a sunny day and won't do anything on a rainy day. The adaptive cruise control is terrible and just works to a maximum of 140 km/h. Which is a scam as the car is still equipped with front radar and was able to support atleast 150 km/h when i bought the car. I have problems with the heating, the windows, the mobile reception, the gps, noises comming from every part of the car. The consumption shown by the car looks good but is sometimes 25 % lower than what I have to recharge. There is no support for AndroidAuto and CarPlay leaving you behind without a lot of useful functions and connectivity. The max charging rate is held by such a short period of time that it doesn't matter. Up to 90 % soc the curve of the BMW is better. The Tesla service is a joke that can't fix a single problem of the car. Like the windows not closing because the friction is that high it triggers the protection. The pointless transmission tunnel on the BMW is annoying. But.. did I mention the "Phantom Braking" of Teslas. I have it atleast once a week and I don't know who would get this over any other car. No head up display or real tow-bar that can be tilted underneath the car automatically. No seat extension for comfortable seating.

A balanced and objective review. I think that it is a good looking car, probably classiest in dark green or grey, however, the red leather... that isn't...I am afraid and it would be disliked by enough potential buyers to devalue the car. It is a pity that BMW didn't use carbon fibre to reduce the excessive weight (as they did in the i3) as that would have increased the range and agility. In the real world, the BMW is lacking the supercharging network, its "Achilles heel" versus any Tesla.
@KDR8162 жыл бұрын
Supercharger point made sense in 2018, now I see Tesla drivers charging at non tesla charges as it's cheaper. Also, you need this only when you are road tripping. How often do you do that?

Actually, at speeds above 50 mph, drag/ rolling resistence becomes the determining factor for range, not weight. And with strutually large supporting parts, for example pillars, cross members, the weight advantage isnt as high as youd think, compared to aluminium or thin high tensile steel.
@DavidWilliams-cs5uf2 жыл бұрын
@@leored79 Yes Leo, you are correct regarding mass and I found the i4 a fantastic drive on motorways and dual carriageways but on the back roads it rides smoothly but is the diametric opposite of the i3 whose lightweight structure makes it agile and very darty around town, in this context, there is also relatively high efficiency. The i4 is superb in some respects but also very compromised and the basic specification doesn't match the competition as we found when researching the options. Coming from an ICE 3 or 4 series the i4 is a great choice.

This guy isn't unbiased at all, he absolutely kisses Tesla's arse constantly. As a car the Tesla is shit, it's poorly built, the interior isn't a nice place to sit, the wipers and headlights don't work, and the lack of a driver display is awful. Yet because Tesla fast and "modern" they're better than everything else apparently.

The thing that amuses me about this is all the reviewers and BMW themselves focus on the M50 when the base model is actually by far the better car 🤷. Who knew lighter and rear wheel drive was a BMW core strength 🤷🤦. Joe Achilles loathed the m50 and actually said he thought the base model might be ok. When I do look at cars every 4-5 years I always check for a good certified preowned with very low usage, I always look but end up going new. I always wonder, "Why did someone spend all this money and then use the car for 1k-8k miles and sell it back after a few months?" So you're the guy.... some rich guy with tons of cars just buys cars for the hell of it and then returns them. Must be nice. I can only afford 1 nice car at a time, I spend months researching before making the choice, can't afford to make a wrong choice. Buying a new car that costs anywhere from 50-100k and then just not liking it and selling it back a few months later for 2/3 (if you're lucky) for what you paid for it just makes me shudder to think about.

Not everything rsev is talking about is very accurate. The bmw i4 m50 actually does manage about 300miles even with the 20inch rims. So theres nothing in it for range. And the i4 40 even outranges the model 3 long range. You can also use teslas chargingnetwork with the Bmw so theres rrally no reason to even buy a trsla enymore unless you just cant afford the Bmw😅 and the looks omg the i4 looks like a million dollars while the model 3 looks like a mazda 2. a matter of taste but if you like the mazda 2 better than bmw i4 design its on you😅

Stupid comment. See videos where we’ve driven the m50 in convoy with a Tesla - that’s a true comparison. It looses out every time with the 20” wheels. In fact I’m being generous. In winter you’ll struggle to get 200 miles from an m50 with 20’s. I’m admitting these are the worst efficiency wheels, not being candid… smaller wheels help a lot. But 20” wheel m50 you’d have to drive at 50mph max in warm weather to get 300 miles out of it! Prove me otherwise
@Aizman872 жыл бұрын
@@RSEV well heres your «stupid» answer as well; Daily motor got 230 miles driving 70mph on motorway w20’s. Inside evs got 239miles at 70mph speed, out of spec drove 245 miles in 70mph motorway. That is really really good at those speed. Now neither tesla or bmw are getting that range in winter but most dont drive that fast in winter either and also nobody is driving with 20» in the winter. And lastly i was never talking about winter driving anyway. Here in norway you would end up averaging about 40mph most times anyway in winter and then you would very easily surpass 200-220miles with the bmw. Tesla go home:)
@RobertBlow2 жыл бұрын
I have one and I'm 4000 miles in, had it since June and pretty much the same spec as yours but I got the sunroof also and oyster leather in portimao. You are spot on with the mileage. I'm usually 220-230 tops on the 20's. I agree that 200 will be about on the money for winter. A colleague has the 40 model on 19 inch wheels and he gets 300 all day long. I wouldn't swap with him though. A couple of observations from me are that the screens got incredibly hot when we had the heatwave in the summer and the steering wheel surround sometimes creaks a little. Coming from 2 ipace, the car was a welcome change and very different experience. 300 miles is not possible in this car, someone's talking rubbish...

Prior to this we operated prius and prius plug-Ins which I also had extensive experience of.
