The M1 wins by far. It doesnt matter if it has less bhp and torque, it still got much of it. Old sportscars is what i love. To be honest ,the i8 is not my taste at all.

You're not alone there mate - the i8 just doesn't do anything for me either. Strange styling, strange synthetic engine note, much much strangeness... I'm not exactly wetting my pants with excitement over the new M3/M4 either. Again, I'm sure they're great and their new owners will love them, but they seem to have lost that raw edge they had before. The raspy n/a sound of BMWs from yesteryear will be sorely missed

I'm in your camp guys, for me it's all about the 2002, the E30, the E9's, the M1, and all the lovely purist drivers' cars they've built over the years. I still think having a lightweight body, a normally aspirated engine, fed through a manual transmission to the rear wheels is the formula for driving nirvana. No matter how the technology develops, this one fact won't change.

I really really want both..... I understand that these are two different cars with different purposes. It is amazing how well BMW got them so right. They don't compare against each other except in the brilliance of their executions. Given the choice, it would be the M1.... I do love than engine and this is where it was most at home.

This car is overrated. Doesn't mean it's a bad car. But with 400+hp, skinny tires, extremely soft suspension (for a supercar), means very poor performance when compared to the 911 C2S and the V8 R8. Sure it has incredible fuel economy, and has technology that relates to those million dollar hypercars, but if that's the kind of car they wanted to make, they didn't have to make a supercar out of it. The fact that they made a supercar, yet held back its performance in such ridiculous ways makes this car very overrated. Again, that doesn't mean it's a bad car.

are you comparing the plastic body panels from the c6 to the carbon fiber reinforced plastic that bmw uses ? Or are u trashing BMW for using plastic like the vet in the 70' ?

toxik217 I do know that it is carbon reinforced plastic on the i8, but my point is that any plastic used in the body is not intended for safety, but for weight reduction and cost savings. So, BMW is using it for the exact reason it is used in the Vette. Sure, carbon fibre on the outside looks nicer. But I doubt that the carbon fibre (how much did they actually add?) offers any significant safety to the i8 ;)

I mean they use it for the body shell and it passed the ncap so... It would make sense for this material to be far superior to aluminum. Vette used plastic for whole body panels and it felt very cheap, but as we can see most cars these days have a lot of plastic body panels for pedestrian safety and weight... Still I don't think you can compare plastic body panels with a plastic carbon fiber body shell :P But i get your point. Lets hope that if it proves to be a good material all automakers use it cause cars are getting just too FAT !

I was just taking a preemptive passive aggressive swipe at the Brits (and others) for using it after so many people complained about Vettes having it ;) I used fibreglass a lot as an amateur while glassing boats, but sadly never got the chance to work with carbon fibre. It would have been nice to use if I ever had the time to build my own electric car similar to the Aptera 2E.

If you feel the i8 is ugly just give it time. Anytime something is so new or different it's very unfamiliar and may appear "ugly". I'm not enamored by the styling but wouldn't be surprised if the i8 is a watershed design 20 or 30 years from now. And the fact that it's design cues are functional only helps it's cause. If you like car manufacturers that don't take any chances then maybe a Corolla or Camry will fit you better.

It's the best for both. There is not enough infrastructure to support EV cars and the battery tech has to improve to the point of 5 minutes charging time before full electric cars become relevant.

Dan Frederiksen Then maybe the holy Tesla can make a cheap EV, the one around $30,000 they have been talking about for years. But they are making a SUV instead because it's more money in it. Everybody is in it to make a profit. If you think about it, there are no very expensive parts in a Tesla. Batteries cost around $12,000. Then there is the electric motor and the gearbox, both much less complicated to make than the engine and gearbox in an IC car. The cabin is no where as luxurious as in a S-class Mercedes. Yet both cars cost the same. A Tesla S should not cost more than $80,000, maximum, and not $120,000 which is the average price, with some extras. But I guess they too are evil mindless swine.

Mechanical, that's how a Car make Fun, when you drive a old BMW 6Cyl (or the 4Cyl E30 M3) it feels real Driving, it sounds like real driving, it's intense, and so many Fun, drive a modern Car and it feels like nothing more as a Slave that bring you from A to B ! Any Classic Car got his own fragrance (example: a E21 is totaly different from a E30) modern cars smells like nothing. There was some Day when a Friend of mine that got a 4Cyl Passat Turbo Diesel with 170hp and DSG Automatic, drive one Time my Manual E30 325, he freaked out, he got so many Fun that he never wan't to get out, he bought 40L Petrol, and drived until the 40L was gone ......... now he come's any Month to drive my Car (he pay's for Petrol, i'm on the Passenger Seat)
