Each upright cone has a coloured cone at its base pointing left or right, you go the opposite side of it. There's single ones, and gates of two. If you look ahead you can pick up a fair bit of what's coming. Doing that while still being mm accurate at each corner, that's the challenge!

I competed in my first Motorkhana (what we'd call this in NZ) a couple of months ago in my Fiesta ST. My times on the paved sections were superb, considering I was competing against cars specifically built for these types of runs and my lack of skill. I found the whole thing rather stressful, trying to remember which cones to go around at which points. While I can say that I've ticked it off the list, it won't be an event that I'll attend again.

Christ knows how you navigate through them comes in the right order. I’d be all over the place.

You get a full 'route' map for each course, and the cones/gates all have coloured direction cones at their base...the challenge is looking ahead two or three cones so you can plan your car positioning accordingly.

Been thinking that any 1 series would be perfect for amateur motorsport, now the secondhand prices have come down. Surely a neat little rear wheel-drive would be the go-to choice in every motor club so there'd be lots of videos to enthuse me, but..... nothing..... just tumble-weed.... and hair-dressing videos. This is exactly what I was looking for!! I bet any of these, from 1600 petrol thro' diesels to the M-cars would be so much fun on 12 car rallies, scatter rallies, autototests and autosolos. What else for affordable rear wheel drive fun these days apart from MX5s?

If I had to drove around those cones, I would have definitely got lost. It looks dame difficult to know which way to go. It was a very nice drive and cool video.

Good vid Mark but I don't see any fun in this except maybe in the snow, it just seems like hard work for the driver and car, fuel ect with no reward. Good for teenagers or people who don't understand car control. I tell you what would be more fun and teach you better car control would be a cone at 1 end of that road and 1 at the other go from a standing start from cone 1 accelerate to cone 2 do a u turn and accelerate back, and u get 2 laps oh and make it a distance that allows you to get into 3rd

It teaches you smoothness, mechanical sympathy, and planning ahead...all things which translate to normal track and road driving, and it just all happens at lower speeds than usual hence no safety regs or helmets required.

Mark you stated that it wasn’t hard on the car mechanically. You’re kidding!!! It looks brutal on tyres and brakes....

The tyres and brakes barely get warm in 90 seconds or less of load. As for the clutch and gearbox, there weren't many shifts needed and the downshifts into first were all double-de-clutched so very mechanically sympathetic and smooth.

I have been on a similar kind of course as a passenger. I would get too lost as the driver. The balls up if the results is a bit funny.

I thought that when I saw the courses laid out and the route maps, but with a walk of each course beforehand and a measured approach...it soon comes to you.
