BMW M235i Gran Coupé - still the real deal?

This is the new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. I am driving top of the range model - M 235i xDrive. Some say that the new 2 Series Gran Coupé isn't a real BMW. It certainly is not w BMW M car. And it is closer to the 1 series rather than 2 series Coupé. The M235i pumps 306 hp and it'll fly from 0-100 in just 4.8 seconds. But how does it stack up against its competitors, the likes of Mercedes CLA or Audi A3? Well, come with me to find out!

I recently had a Challenger R/T for a few days as a rental while having some maintenance done on my 500X. (had to take an FCA product and Enterprise had a that or a Grand Caravan. Decisions, decisions. Well, that one was easy.....) Not being a soccer mom, my need for a minivan was negligible. I called the R/T The Smile Machine as I could not stop smiling while driving it, sitting in it, listening to it idle or looking at it. Glad to get my car back but man, what a beast, what a joy, what sheer exuberance!! I got used to it very quickly and she was surprisingly manageable. Even when I was simply tooling along and merely gave the pedal a tap, it just crouches like a tiger and wants to roar and launch. I babied it (honest, I really did) as it wasn't mine, and who needs a ticket after all? But I did goose it a few times when in quiet, less-busy settings to get a feel, and boy, do you ever feel. And that wasn't even the BIG Hemi. The 6.2/392 would likely make your life flash before your eyes. Again, glad to see you back bellissima!

I think the new generation of 1 and 2 series are good cars in their own right and are evenly matched with their direct competition. I understand people's disappointment with the new smaller engine and front wheel drive biased platform, but people need to understand that with more nanny state regulations and higher production costs it's about streamlining production. A RWD 3.0l S6 1 or 2 series doesn't make financial sense. They would need a separate production line, which is costly. Sharing the platform with MINI saves a huge amount of money. If you want a RWD 1 series go buy a used one for a very reasonable price.

Hey Anna, I'm glad to see you're back in business. First I have to say that I like your dress and sporty shoes, you will always be a classy woman whatever your dress is. I see that BMW understood that they had to change something to stay concurrential with Mercedes and Audi. You know that I'm a real Mercedes AMG-lover and have the C43 Coupé but this Beemer is not looking bad in his blue dress. Unfortunately, I have to say that the new dashboard is looking a little bit sheap, but of course, that's my personal opinion. When I compare the dash of my daughter's 1-serie, it's almost the same and that's a shame for a M-car. But all together, BMW has done a good job I think. And really, your video is super ! I was scrolling KZbin to watch different reviews of M235i GC longing to get my car in November. And I realised that you're Polish and I dare to say that there are only two Polish car content creators creating quality content in English: you and Marek Drives. Chapeau bas! Btw. it's one of the cars from BMW's Poland press fleet with a very similar spec to the one that you've reviewed (and also in Snapper Rocks Blue). It's probably not a car for a true BMW fan. But I'm a SAAB guy and for me 2 litres straight 4 turbocharged engine is perfectly normal (and I'm never gonna sell my classic 900 :) ).

With the 2Litre motor now having the same 0-100km/hr time as a 2 year old 6 cyl B58 engine I do wonder if it would last as long as it would need to be revved a lot harder than a 6 cyl B58.

@@AnnaOnRoads American vehicles mostly; my immediate family, extended family and friends have had all manner of classics, muscle cars, street rods etc. over the years. I am not the last word on things automotive by any means, but I've been around car culture all my life. I like cars both old and new, many brands and models and nameplates. I've ridden in may interesting and special cars over the years. Some European also, I'd say mainly Italian and British as far as those go. Not too much into most German and Japanese stuff; that's just subjective taste and I say to each his or her own. Although everything these days is so intertwined anyway, I realize. My 500X is my everyday ride (which is essentially a Jeep Renegade under the surface after all; they are built side by side in Italy, though I like the sportiness of the Fiat and the fact that you don't see millions of them everywhere.) It replaced the PT Cruiser GT Turbo I bought new and owned happily for 17 years. I loved the retro-flavored panache of the Cruisers when they came out. It was time at last, though a bit sad to let the Chrysler go. Scores of positive memories!! Still in good shape and not ultra-high mileage but things were starting to wear with age. However my cousin bought the PT for her daughter who's in college, so she's still rolling and remains in the family! As for muscle, well, we have a few things squirreled away but we need to get cracking and get 'em back on the road after a too-long hiatus. : D

I had the six cylinder M235i for four years but when I decided to change it last summer nothing from BMW did it for me until I saw the John Cooper Works MINI in the showroom next door, I was surprised just how expensive it was when the extras are added but it's definitely more exciting and rewarding to drive than the M235i even when being 100 bhp down as long as you remember it's a MINI, that means smaller so don't expect large boot space.

Great review as always Anna. I think I prefer the BMW 2 Series Coupe to the Gran Coupe but I guess if you have a young family and you still what a bit of fun it's kinda Ideal for that person. There's something a bit off about the back end of the 2 Series Gran Coupe, just doesn't look quite right for some reason. Would love to see what you think about the M2 CS.
