BMW M240i - 1000 miles in 4 days - BMW WELT/MUSEUM - Joe Achilles

I needed to be in Vienna for a Brompton bicycle race, I decided to fly in/out of Munich & check out the BMW WELT & BMW Museum. I was also lucky enough to borrow a German press M240i and drive that through Germany and Austria.
It was great spending some more quality time in the M240i, I discovered it really does make for a great long distance cruiser & couldn't think of many cars (regardless of cost) that could have done it better...

Had my m240i 6 months now and agree with all of your points, fantastic all round and flexible motor. Done Nearly 4K and car feel the motor starting to loosen a little, what an engine it is too. The only thing I would disagree with is adaptive suspension. I have fitted Birds B2 suspension to mine and it absolutely transforms the car, far FAR superior to either the standard passive or adaptive especially at high speed, it is fantastic. Just smothers and irons out bumpy pot hole ridden roads rather than fidgeting about on them. Quaife LSD next :-)

I'm going to upgrade my 2018 mx5 in August to a m240i. This video was helpful in making my mind up. Scary and fun in some parts with the car on the limit lol n you in the slow lane, only possible in Germany lol. This car offers near m type performance with also being able to handle the daily drive to work / school to drop my daughter off and not drive you mad. At the weekend we have the wife's X1, will be good to be a all bmw family again.

That was near Schladming in Austria, I got up at the crack of Dawn to climb that mountain for this video, unfortunately the summer tyres prevented me from getting to the top and I actually got stuck and had to be pulled out of a small ditch, such a shame as the scenery was unreal! Great vid, those roads look epic. I've got the 225d (same blue) in the uk, it has those seats. I didn't want to be sliding around on leather, getting high mileage means leather would be worn too. Would have preferred petrol, but much more money, even for the 228i. I've got the standard msport 18s, do look a bit small .But not sure I would want to sacrifice ride and tyre cost, just for cosmetics. Something I will look into when tyres need replacing. I'm sure I've seen other 2 series (not m2) with 19s and the difference in gap between top and side looks even worse.

Cheers man! These cars do incredible jobs at getting all that power down through their rear wheels, only when its damp and cold (this time of year haha) where you will notice the TC light flashing out of corners etc... On that note the TC does such a great job, you never feel like the car wants to swap ends, in Sports + it gets the senses going, turn everything off and you will soon realise its RWD. Cheers man

@@chisharpe3304 wow this was an old comment! Yeah I did get an m140, great car, really enjoyed it. In Sport + it was really noticeable the difference between quattro and rwd, but apart from that it wasn't hugely noticeable. I sold the m140 a couple of years later and moved into a Range Rover Sport, and then last year picked up my Tesla Model Y which is pretty ridiculous in comparison.

I currently drive a 2014 428i convertible. My biggest problem is that I like to be aggressive and that doesn't do me any favors when it comes to gas mileage. I miss my '03 M3 because it wasn't much effort to get up to speed.

I'm happy for them not to offer alcantara, since leather - even though it's vinyl - would have to be an expensive cost option like it is in Germany. We get more spec for less in the UK which is a good thing. Also don't you think that BMW might have given your car a special treatment since it's a press loaner, hence why it could feel different to the regular M240i you tested in London?

But I believe the cloth seats to be better and wish BMW UK would let us have them as a no cost option. BMW have never been accused of having "special" press cars, the one in the UK was 95% this car but it hadn't done any miles, I know from buying many new cars, they get much better with age...

Hi, great video, I love it. I'M GETTING A m240I, do you think it is necessary to get xdrive (AWD) in the m240i, I see that you were driving in snowy roads in Vienna/Germany in a RWD version. I live in the Northeast USA Philadelpha, PA. I think most of the time it is not needed (AWD) in a sport car like this one, just snow tires. I'm getting the auto transmission. What do you think? Do I really need the security of AWD? It cost $2000 less without AWD. Thanks for making an exciting video, you put me over the top on my decision to purchase a m240i. Thank you.

No, I was stubborn and assumed/thought that with my very first M135 (in 2013), after ownership I tried an adaptive car and it was noticeably better at being comfortable or being sporty. The passive system is good, but adaptive is worth every penny.

Definitely recommend the adaptive suspension over the OEM m suspension...I made that mistake.

How does the Alcantara compare to your leather seats? You say they are more supportive, however, it didn't quite feel like it to me at the dealership. Alcantara is standard on the M140i here, but I upgraded to Black Leather and Blue stitching. I understand it's a matter of preference, however, I believe the leather seats are better, and probably more durable. thoughts?

BTW Did you drive the manual M2 before picking the DCT? Or did you pick the DCT because you already had a manual M135i? I have only driven the DCT M2 so far and obviously it's astonishing and it would be awesome on the track(gotta go faster than my dad in his f30 335d). But will I miss having a manual? If your M135i would be auto would you then opt for the manual in your M2? I would have to sell my manual M3e46 and replace it with the M2, and my 2nd car is an auto. Sorry for the long write up, just wanna hear some opinions from another babyM-lover :D Cheers!

Really great video! Is there any difference between the M140i and M240i, practicality excluded? I'm swinging towards the M140i at the moment as I think I very slightly prefer how it looks and considering its a few grand cheaper than an identically spec'd 2 series it seems an even better deal.

I actually like these cloth/Alcantara seats more as well. I found them more comfy and they don't get boiling hot here in Australian summers (this was on a 125i M Sport). Standard here in Aus too.

Make your mind up Joe! ....in your video "BMW M135i AUTO vs MANUAL Test/Review 2016 LCI" you said that the adaptive suspension wasn't that great and it was either a little to soft or too hard and uncomfortable and it needed a middle setting as neither setting felt right? I think you said that you knew when you were in sport mode because the ride became uncomfortable ? Or have they improved it that much in the M140\M240 to make it the "must have option"? Haha this is true! I have spent loads more time in passive and adaptive cars since the Auto vs Manual video, the adaptive cars do feel dampened better overall when really pushing on, almost like they run on more expensive dampers (which I don't think they do?). Comfort is what really becomes noticeable over long journeys, the car just settles so much better than the passive setup. Hope this makes sense. Cheers Joe

Not necessarily whilst having the cars in the videos, but I guess you have quite some experience driving those. Since I'm living in Switzerland I would probably lean towards Xdrive, and what would it mean for the handling and experience? Even though the cars are more wishful thinking than reality, at the moment.

Hey buddy, no worries at all! Unfortunately we cant get X drive M135/140/235/240's over here in the UK, I did ask Germany originally to try an X drive 140/240 but they didn't have a press car available so I really cant comment, I hear they still offer 90% of the RWD balance though! The 435/440 are incredible cars but around £10k more than their equivalent 2 series, they offer a better chassis (especially comfort) and a bit more interior space, but less excitement when pushing on.... Ask your local dealer for some test drives, cheers for the subscription - Joe.

great vid, can see how the editing is getting smarter over time...... Had my 140 for 3 weeks now and coming up to 1k miles. Still got a lot to explore performance wise, foot flat it flies, but i still not done much in manual mode on clear lanes. Comparing to an M2 is something i cant really do but - my wife is fine with a 140 hapy driving it at 50% max throttle in comfort mode, but she would hate an M2, so for me its a perfect balance. 36mpg going to work vs my 320d where i get 48mpg. Boot is way bigger than i remembered too - mountain bike fits in easy
