In 1989, Randy Balingit-Hartmann bought the first BMW M5 brought to San Diego and has owned it ever since. As someone on the shy side, Randy wanted a car that fit his personality-one that was fast and powerful yet unassuming. In all its unassuming four-door glory the E28 M5 is often overlooked, but this sedan packs the same amount of power as Ferrari 308 GT and if not respected will surprise you in the turns of your favorite road. Randy has had this car through the ups and downs of life and has put over 400,000 miles on it with no major problems. Dedicated to the M5 for life, Randy will continue driving it the way it was meant to be driven with its detuned racing engine-like he stole it.

This is a touching video. People say that you can't love a car. It's only metal and plastic. I think this video proves that statement wrong.

I truly believe you can fall in love with a car but, tend to agree with some who don't get it. To me the M5 is just a machine. I let people eat and drink inside the M5. I let some even test drive her so they understand my passion for her. To me, the connection to my M5 is the people and experiences owning it has exposed me to. The friends I have made along the way...the experiences and opportunities are what connect me to the M5. Of course the machine itself has to be loved...but again most would not understand that type of love right?

My dad always drove e28's in his early days, ranging from 525i's, 525e's and 528i's. The original M5 was always sort of ''his dream car''. I hated them back in the day since they looked very outdated compared to the other cars that where on the road at that time period and he was always mending them, since some of the one's he owed always broke down. But over the last few years i started to create a small love for them and every time now when i spot one, i look at it and admire it.

I'm born '99 and I do feel some respect for the E28 although E39 would be the car for me to live with if I had a chance to chose so. But most likely once I'll be making enough money to afford one. It'll prolly be too rare to get one if there will be any for sale at all.

Beautiful story, especially the part about "good memories" and how it makes you smile every time you drive it. My father was the second owner of the one I have and brought to Australia, and during my cancer treatment as a teen, my father would drive me to Stanford for tests everyday for a year, and that car cradled me back and forth during some pretty nasty stuff. I agree with Randy, I'll never let it go.

I think it takes commitment to keep and maintain a car like this for so many years. I mean, this is a great car hands down but to not be seduced by newer models with curvier shapes promising more of that "ultimate driving machine" magic is highly admirable to say the least. Maybe this is the kick I need to be content with and look after the things I have instead of trying to jump ship every time a newer model shows up.

This car is a magical memory for me. I was 16 yrs old and got my first job as a porter at a BMW dealership in the Chicago NW suburbs. The owner trusted me with his cars and let me learn to drive stick on his 88 M5. It was black with mint tan leather interior. He put these kick ass Racing Dynamics mag wheels and sticky tires on. I drove around town in that thing blaring Bob Marley music. Also got to drive his orange 635 csi with gold bbs wheels, 67 Corvette stingray convertible and aftermarket AC Cobra. No wonder I love cars. Would buy one today if I had the money.

Love that car, Randy ! My first BMW was an E12 530i (in the days before M-cars). I rebuilt the engine (dyno`d at 266 RWHP), and installed a full Alpina suspension. Solid as a rock and went like a scalded cat. Wish I still had it. Do NOT sell that car....ever !

A great story. There can't be many one owner from new E28 M5's out there, certainly not a daily driver with 400k miles on it. I'm so glad it is still driven every day too, as it should be, and hasn't become a garage/trailer queen as has happened to so many rare older cars. Still my favorite M5 of all time.

At 14 I saw my first E28 M5, I immediately fell in love with the look and sound, an understated beast of a car that really made a deep impression on me. At 21 working my first BMW tech job I had the luck to finally drive one. I’ll never forget that first drive, the S38 engine is a mechanical work of art that is immensely satisfying to rev out. I’ve since driven virtually every M car BMW has built, obviously most are much faster than the E28, but none are as joyful to drive.

Old and a bit run down. I would sell it after I got my finances in order and found something I really wanted. A year (and a couple grand) later I can't really see parting with it. Ever. Im 35 and Ive owned many cars but when Im coming out of work and see that white e30 in the lot it FEELS like MY car more than any Ive ever owned. Somehow everything about it is 'just right'.

Machine and man, a match made in heaven. This speaks to all of us that have such passion for automobiles or the engineering that makes these machines so special. I have a Bimmer that invokes these kinds of feelings. Walking to the garage door to look out at her, can't wait for the next drive. She is my 330ci ZHP 6MT "Ingrid" and I am in love.

+Kaisuke971 Never too many miles in an e28. i just sold my e34 535 with over 500,000 miles, with ever seam and weld in perfect order. It reamains in the family. That's what BMW build quality was...once upon a time. I now own a low mileage e39 540 MSport. The quality is nowhere close.

I like how he says that he bought the car new and then goes on to tell us he had to bring his Dad in to help him buy it. I would respect people more if they just straight up said "My Dad bought me my first car because I was young without enough money".

I've always wondered, when people race through canyons, they cross over to other lanes, come upon slower vehicles, push predictable handling to the edge, are they not endangering others and what is the implied ethic.

For me I look well ahead. You know if a car is coming the other way by instant and follow through. Your only going to be over the line for a split second, then let your car drift back in your lane. Too many ppl drive with a view of 20ft in front of their cars. For those who know how to drive enthusiastically, they look 200 ft. listen 150 ft and sense 50 ft around their cars. Most will never get it. It isn't something you understand.

Sorry mate, but racing is not about a deathwish. F1 is here today thanks to many people, not the least of which is Sir Jackie Stewart. If your friend dies right in front of you and somebody tells you "Keep racing" and that doesn't affect you in some way... I don't know what to say. Same goes for NASCAR, Rallying, Bike Racing and so on... And if you don't think your safety is not important, that's your problem. But you always have to think about other road users. ALWAYS!!! Even if you are breaking the speed limit...

Everette Singleton You're the first person I've read who's got it right. There are many curves on a twisty road that have double solid lines, but you can see ahead far enough to know whether or not it's safe to take the inside line for a brief moment. If you don't have the experience, you won't get it.
