Hey bro, if you want to see a classic BMW you need to check out the film Nothing But Trouble. Dan Aykroyd put an E23 733i in the film that featured not only a telenavigation unit(Precursor to GPS) in 1991 but a 733i that would fit in at a car show today. Period correct wheels which were rare even in their day that would still look hot today. Seeing that goofy film on TV when I was a kid, watching Chevy Chase drift his 7 series is what turned me onto BMWs.

In 1976 I bought a brand new, Inka Orange, 2002 BMW from Jay Allen Dealership in Medford, Oregon. I believe Brian Hancock sold it to me. I paid $7000 for it. To this very day I can truthfully assert that it was the finest car I have ever driven. I had it for 20 years. Butter smooth with breathtaking acceleration! I used to love driving it fast up Greensprings Highway, just South of Ashland, Oregon. To this very day, I swear by BMW! And I adore Brian Hancock, still a friend of mine today. ❤

my family goes back to 1974 3.0 coupe. But the 2002 was itself a growth from the 1600 in the 1960's. Now my 8th BMW is an X7 beast, but surprisingly quick. The E60 N54 power with 6 speed manual was actually quicker than M3's at the time - all we did was the Dinan stg II stuff. We even ate most Porsches with that thing. My favorite of all my BMWs remains the 850CSi, having tweaked as much as we could- almost tossable if you can believe that [$45K later], and yes, you could balance a nickle on the intake manifold and start the engine and rev it and shut down without the nickel moving. PS. a real BMW nerd would be waiting for the Nue Classe and place their order as soon as they are taking orders. Style 8's would like nice on that 528 if the offset works. BMW is not going to share much of the older lines - many of them remain embarrassed by former offerings and they kicked so many of us to the curb protecting Chris Bangle and his butts.

My first experience in a BMW was a fellow who raced Mustangs but who also had a 1970 2002. I was about 15 and dating his daughter. We live near New York City and he drove me into New York City to pick her up at private school one day. Well the way he tossed that thing around those horribly bumpy streets was nearly surreal. The car smooted out everything in sight and we could weave around all those rattly taxicabs and other Detroit Metal without even breathing heavy. I was hooked. Since then I've had about 9 2002s and a variety of other Beauty BMWs. I currently have an almost identical car to his, malaga '72 mine, completely restored to pristine condition including a BMW reman motor and 5spd. Nothing more enjoyable than jumping in that car. Exotic car owners at local Cars and Coffee don't get as much attention lol. But really there's nothing like driving it,, the visibility the feel and the joy of being at one with the car.

As a 17 yr old, I was so fortunate to get to drive regularly my dad’s BMWs back in the day including both his red E3 2500 sedan and his green 1800 sedan. I loved those cars. Moving on forwards, my 2nd wife when I met her had an original 3 series 323i which she later on upgraded to an E36 318is sedan (manual). That was such a good drivers car. My current daily driver now is a E90 323i, however, if the ducks line up one day I would be keen to get a E46 330Ci coupe or convertible as well as a more modern 435 coupe. And all of this comes from someone whose only other cars have been classic Fiats and Alfa Romeos.

My dad had a pale blue BMW 2500 saloon (the same body as the Bavaria) with the 4 speed manual. My family of five took a trip from the NW England to Portugal in it and I used to spend hours cleaning it at weekends. He rated it so highly that when it was smashed to bits by a deer leaping in front of it as he was driving 'at pace' he had it rebuilt rather than scrapped. He would let me refuel it because I loved the way the fuel filler was behind the rear license plate!

In the late 1960’s, BMW added a tach, front anti sway bar and increased displacement to 2 liters to the 1600 (1602). The 6 cylinder sedans were introduced as 2500 and 2800 models, reflecting their displacement. The Bavaria was a “budget” version. All were amazing machines for the day.

That beige car is an E3, it is basically the same platform as the E9 coupe. It was a HIGH END luxury car back in the day. All 3.0L cars already had 4 vented(!)disc brakes with proper 4pot calipers up front, It has independent rear suspention. You didn't see many of them. They were expensive executive cars. A true alternative to a Mercedes W108 280SE. You could buy a quick sports version named the 3.0Si (200hp) or a stretched version 2.8L and 3.3Li. These E3 cars are very nice to drive, they feel small, like a 3 series. There was a 2500 (150hp) , 2800 (170hp) , 3.0S (180hp), 3.0Si (200hp) 3.3Li (205hp, only automatics) I just love that 1800Ti ! These were raced in touring car races in the 1960's. These days you can see them race in the Festival of speed at Goodwood , UK.

Had a 1976 3.0 Si saloon back in 1980! Swapped it from a 1971 Ford Cortina 1600E because that car couldn't handle the Belgian motorways when I worked for NATO at the SHAPE headquarters back in the day. Lovely car, could do 100 in 3rd gear (4-speed box!). Only problem I had was when it overheated and cracked the head! Got it fixed and went on to do another 40000 miles in it. Just bought my second ever BMW, a 1986 635CSi 1 owner (!) car with 72000 miles on the clock. Loving it to bits. Cheers from a (very chilly) Otford, Kent, UK.

All the American car companies were making the same version of the same car with the same type of engine and suspension and interior. The BMW was so different with its inline 6, and independent suspension and different interiors. They were sports cars with 4 doors and so unique from the American cars and so exotic and cool. Now BMW and Mercedes and Audi and Lexus and even Cadillac make the same version of the same car.

You are soooo right !!!I own a 1985 BMW M635CSi and 99% of BMW drivers on the road don't even notice my car and don't have the faintest idea of what it is !!! And don't forget that it would be a bad idea to let the new BMW owners get informed about our older models....They would realize the poor quality of their new cars!!!! BTW, the e28 M5 has a 3.5L engine....I am surprised you don't know that !!!

Alpina B7 E28 (330HP) was the fastest sedan in the world back then, M5 was just behind (286HP euro, 256 US). BTW, in 1988, it's a M88, 3.5L 24v stock. The S36, 3.6L came in the E34 (315HP), followed by the S38 in the E34 Evo (340HP).

I worked part time at the Clearwater Datsun /BMW Dealer in 1972 when I was in High School and I drove these cars all the time. The 3.0 CS was the hot car. The Bavaria was your dads BMW. Not as lust worthy as the CS. Great cars though. To find one as clean as this one is like finding a unicorn.

Had a 74 Bavaria, replaced with carbs with Weber down drafts and fitted the distributor with an Allison electronic points conversion. It ran the best with Champion copper plugs, the Bosch plugs seemed to fall off earlier than the Champions. I used Arco Graphite 20/50 till they stopped making it. I would have loved to see the inside of the engine on a tear down. I had it for 17 years. My license plates, 4FASTLN. It ruled in the 70's.

Very cool video. As far as 5 series, finding a nice e28 is not easy, but finding a nice e12 is extremely difficult. I agree the e28 is where it’s at as far as M5s go.

I have 2 e28 535i and 1 535is 5spd and i adore them. Incredibly smooth and fun to drive. Absolutely brilliant cars. I also have 2 of bmw’s very first “motorsport” engines which was in e12 M535i (M90b35, M30b35LE) which was used as a test engine before production of the M1 which had an m88 dohc engine, which later became the s38 in the e24 M6 and e28 M5. They share the same block. The S38 in e28 was 3.5L not 3.0l. Out of the 1300 units send to north america 30 M5’s in the usa were black with black leather interior. Yes im a nerd ik. I just adore e28s

The 1800Ti was the sporty version of the 1500 Neu Klasse sedan the ushered in the modern era of BMW. They were raced in touring car series against the Alpha Romeo's and at tarmac rallies. The 1800TiSA was a homoglomated special with 5 speed manual, disc brakes and other upgrades to qualify for racing. If you check out vintage 2LT, two litre touring car videos are interesting. There was a coupe version, 2000CS, that introduced the design of the 2500CS to 3.0CSL series. Arguably the best looking BMW of the modern era. After the 328 cars and the 507 of the 1950's.

BMW, back in the day, commissioned Italian designer Michelotti to pen their cars. You’ll be surprised to see other makes that had similar styling. Like the Hino Contessa, and various Triumph models to name two companies. The Contessa, in particular, had a front end that was inspired by the Chevrolet Corsair. While the rest of the body has similar BMW lines. Hino was bought out by Toyota, and the name was kept for their truck division til today.

My daily in high school was an 86 528e. It was burgundy with the black leatherette interior. The only thing that I hated was it was an automatic. I’ve been looking for a 5 series of that vintage since I regrettably sold that one. Once I finish my VW restomod, I will find an e28 to be a fun daily

Larry, next time you are in Florida, you'll have to check out my dad's BMW collection! (If you are at Amelia right now, look for the silver BMW 2002 Turbo... Think that's the one he's taking this year.) Anyway, he has a whole collection over in Crescent City, FL. To include a perfect 2000 Nue Classe, which was one of the few cars this guy was missing, I think! Also, if you are ever up in Cleveland, happy to show you my collection: E30 M3, R32 Skyline, a 1970 240Z I just finished restoring myself, a 1987 Callaway Corvette, just to name a few! Though, you'll probably be more interested in the seven story warehouse I'm turning into my home and car barn!

One of my favorite short stories is one by Rhall Dahl titled The Fingersmith. In it, a guy had just bought the finest and fastest new BMW available and to show it off he picks up a hitchhiker so he can brag about it. In conversation the hitchhiker tells him that he's a "Fingersmith." and explains that goldsmiths work with gold, silversmiths with silver and of course a fingersmith works with his fingers. The driver says what the hell does that mean? And the fingersmith hands him his belt as explanation. Conversation quickly goes back to this amazing new car and how fast it can go, which obviously needed a demonstration which resulted in getting pulled over and being ticketed. The driver is beside himself and crying over his ticket which, for reasons that I can't remember is a total disaster. But the fingersmith consoles him and calms him down and then hands him the police officer's ticket book.
