Thats wonderful instruction video. I did mine as well, only difficulty i had was the housing's bottom bolt, where i could not torque it with the wrench but tightened with a spanner. İ also did bleeding procedure. İ added Around 300 ml coolant

Do you have to drain down the oil and coolant before doing this? Also did you have to bleed the coolant system afterwards?

No I didn’t have to bleed the coolant the car bleeds itself and you lose very minimal coolant when doing this and you do not have to drain the oil just do this when engine is cold

you should always go for oem if it is for vanos

Great video Always. I tried to do this but now when i go to tighten the 10mm bolt at the bottom of the oil cooler unit it just turns without tightening fully. Anyway to get this out mate? Cheers Dean

Did you get any answer on this? To my knowledge the N52 engine and its parts are made from aluminum and magnesium, thus bolts are aluminum instead of steel to prevent corrosion. From what I read on internet, aluminum bolts should not be reused after removal and be replaced with new ones, but I have no information regarding these specific ones.

I have a BMW 328i 2007 n51 engine and I was told that I would needed to change my whole oil filter housing, due to the oil leaking at the cap. I didn’t see any type of crack in the housing. How often is there a crack or warp where the caps line is? And how often does a oil housing crack or warp ?

Tee Rich ha mate that’s what they all say ignore them the only time you remove that manifold is to get to the ccv that’s it or disas you can unbolt the manifold and lift it up a bit to get to the oil filter bolt

not really mate as its still gonna hold oil in the filter anyway and in the oil cooler so regardless its gonna give out best thing is do this when engine is cold and not got up to temp and running all over the engine make sure its cold so its ready to go and just do it

Do you know if the bolt under the manifold will come out completely on a UK spec N53 (direct injection) engine without lifting/removing the inlet manifold first. @@b.skis_3054 if you stripped the last filter housing bolt with the spanner you can remove the flange for the coolant hose that’s in the way (the ”mickey mouse flange”). then you have enough room to hammer on a t10 socket and get it out. just beware that this will introduce air into the cooling system and you will need to re-bleed it correctly, if not you risk the engine and water pump. i would strongly suggest doing a complete coolant change altogether to be sure
