As a non-BMW owner, I want to rave about this video. Excellent pacing, superb camera work, detailed descriptions as you moved along. All the gotchas that the home mechanic will encounter were highlighted perfectly. I don't know if you own your own shop or not. If you do, I can only imagine the customers patiently waiting for you to maintain their car. If you work in a shop for someone, WHATEVER THEY ARE PAYING YOU IS NOT ENOUGH! Well done young man! A credit to your profession!

Great video! I wish I had watched this earlier this month. I had the oil filter housing gasket fail and it caused the belt below it to snap and shred. Now it's in the shop to see if there's any shredded belt material that got sucked into the engine. Note to self and any other N54 owners, don't ignore an oil leak.

Doing this today on my 2009 535, leaked enough over time to soften my upper radiator hose and cause a coolant leak, so replacing that as well. Already replaced my belt and front main seal earlier this year (thankfully the belt only got pulled into the motor a bit and was able to extract it in one piece!!). That is a horrible design flaw with these motors (the chronically leaking oil housing gasket as well)!!

BMW Engine Coolant Hose Z4 325i 325i,325xi,330i,330xi URO11537545890PRM A metal coolant fitting for the front of that oil filter housing base. Very inexpensive and effective. No more worries about designing plastic fitting or coolant leaks. I didnt remove my intake I used a 1/4 in drive shallow socket and swivel to remove the bolt under the intake. Super easy job! BMW wanted $1,600 bucks and parts was $27 dollars for the gasket.

And in some cases this oil leak can actually cause an even bigger problem. When the belt becomes so slippery that it comes off, it shreds behind the crank pully and can destroy your oil seal and even will force pieces of the belt through the crank seal into your oil pan!!! Removing and cleaning the oil pan at the dealership is about $900 I think, because of the big amount of labor .......

A bit late, but new BMW owner trying this myself. Do you replace the oil filter with a new one or reuse? Do you change the oil during this as well? If you loosen the intake manifold to get the housing out, doesn’t that break the seals? Shouldn’t you just remove it and replace the seals vs chancing that developing a leak too?
@TheFrenchPug
@TheFrenchPug Жыл бұрын
You can re use unless you're changing your oil at the same time. Depending on how long its been the last time you replaced your manifold gaskets, it wouldn't be a bad idea since they're not expensive. I've seen many, many videos where they just put the manifold back on though.

J Williams if what you’re talking about is the cylinder head - thermostat coolant hose, it’s the one he talks about being corroded inside the head. It starts just underneath the oil filter housing and the connector has 2 bolts making it look like Mickey Mouse ears 🐭
@gdeangelkick
@gdeangelkick 4 жыл бұрын
@@buzzyinurface The thing to do when you replace that hose is get the metal replacement hose bib to attach to the head and then clamp on the hose rather than put back on more of BMW's limited-life-span plastic. There is info on bimmer forums about it. If you were told to replace the hose, then do it because it will explode spontaneously and you'll loose all your coolant on the road. As far as filters go, I don't think there is one between the head and the thermostat... so if someone used those terms for you (and you didn't just get it mixed up youself) I wouldn't let that person near my car.

Shop manual says that aluminum one-use bolts are painted blue from BMW. That doesn't mean someone didn't work on the car and you have ones that aren't blue... but if you know the cars history was dealer serviced, I think if they aren't blue you can reuse them.

Question for anybody who can answer, why exactly does he unplug the vacuum like from the canister & the o2 sensors? Just for extra space?

Specifically citing the N54 engine. The vacuum tube is connected to two small vacuum lines that are right above the third bolt holding down the housing, there is no room to push them aside towards the manifold. The Oxygen sensor connectors are removed to allow the intake manifold to slide backwards a few inches, because that is the only way that you can access that third bolt on the oil cooler housing.

I have been working on BMW s for a while. This is the most " mechanic abuse" that I have seen from that manufacturer. With some exceptions the world is at your feet when you are in the design stages, but how this bolt ended up below the intake manifold with no access to remove it, without hours of work [ specifically referencing the 335i convertible ] is beyond me to reason [ Year 2004 to 2013 ]. And the Damn Housing is always leaking and dripping on the moving serpentine belt causing it to prematurely fail, slinging oil into the alternator and across the whole front of the engine. Oh BROTHER!!!

what's a fair price for a mechanic to charge?
@marckiefer4708

it's 5 hours of labor plus parts. My mechanic is charging me about $600 but there's another guy in this thread that was going to get charged $1300! I'd say if you can get a shop to do the job for less than $500, you're not getting taken advantage of.

Is it manual or automatic? Isn’t it not available on automatics? Mine is 06 manual and it has the cooler
