Thanks bro i'm experiencing some low power in 1st and 2nd gear, before my rpms get up to a good number. I'm at 70k miles and I dont think vanos has ever been serviced. I'm gonna do this and see if my performance increases

Supposed to be oily, they're submerged in oil lol. That's how they work. Oil pressure flows around and through them shifting your cams (VANOS) system under hi oil pressure.

But cleaning them worked? What was cleaned off the solenoids that made them work again ?

@@acauto7886 they just get gunk type deposits and varnish from the oil and then they don't shift well when the solenoid tells them to. MAF cleaner works great for them and frees them up. How long a clean lasts is to be determined as there's been varying results. Last a few months, maybe 4, each time I've cleaned them. However, you can get a vanos code and assume it's the solenoids when in reality, the cam ledges and rings are worn. Therefore, the solenoid actually does what it's supposed to but the cam itself doesn't shift laterally as the ring and cam ledges isn't sealing. In this case you simply pull the valve cover, remove the cam trays, replace ledge and ring for each cam and reinstall. About a two hour job and only need one speciality tool that's not expensive. If you ever replace a vanos solenoid and still get the same codes, move on to the ledges and ring replacement. Then your all good! I went through this myself and little info online is available. So many N54 owners just assume that once the very basic repairs are completed, if they still have lower boost then they assume it's time to replace turbos. New turbos can work hard enough to achieve results but it's really masking a problem that could've been solved/fixed for thousands less. Ask me how I know lol. 😭

So I got a question. I took both of mines out to clean them bc by car was randomly misfiring and the Rpms were jumpy . One of the vanos had the o ring but the other one didn’t . I didn’t think nothing of it . And I cleaned them put them back on. When I went to start the car the cold start was very rough and the rpms jumped up for like 6 secs and then went away . The service engine light came on too . And the car I feel like it lost power . Do you think it bc the o rings ? I might have to just order new vanos which I don’t mind . But the vanos looked very clean . Car has 130k miles but I only put 2k on it since I got it . Just want your input on it . Thank you .

It could definitely be due to the o-ring! Check the hole to see if the o-ring is stuck in the hole. If the o-ring is not there, definitely replace it with a new one.

Not too sure. I'd definitely say to fix it asap. I'd assume you'd possibly have a boost Leak and/or your car would throw a code saying the sensors or sensing an issue.

Just a reminder, I no longer have my first pair of headlights. These are a new pair off protuning. I've had them for a few months now. No problems what's so ever, they work great

Did you clean them prior to replacing them? Never seen one that after spraying MAF cleaner into the solenoids they didn't work 💯% again. Seen more of the vanos I rings go bad before the solenoids. It happens, just rare a cleaning didn't work.

I've never seen tools look more awkward in someone's hands. And... The valves are actuated by oil pressure. It would much more more concerning if they *weren't* covered in oil.
