Required Spec- 38 NM on tensioner pulley & 60nm on smaller pullies. I bought a brand new bolt , I am changing the two pullies, plus the tension pully, with the new belt, they came with new bolts. We need to confirm- when torquing the bolts to the required value- and what exactly do you mean an extra angle.?
@MechaniclifeJDM Жыл бұрын
Torque + Angle is for Aluminum bolts

Sir… This “earthling” is 67 years of age. I have seen literally a hundred or more BMW repair videos. You impress me as being •THE FINEST MECHANIC OF THE LOT… •bar NONE! Allow me to share a story about our 2008 X5 3.0si with 145,000 miles. We recently moved up to the Door Peninsula of Wisconsin. Little did we know Were we in a a nightmare. Feel free to share our experience with your viewers, to point out the value of regular maintenance. So we hear a slight rumbling from under the hood. I would of normally ran the vehicle up on ramps to take a look. Not having any space from just moving in the garage, I only had gravel. And I just feel gravel is just too unsafe. The local mechanic at the “gas station” finds a hose with a cut in it, from the belt wobbling due to a bad tensioner. But he could not even get the correct hose! So he cuts out about 4” of our hose, and slides in a metal sleeve! On the next visit he attempts to remove the defective tensioner, and breaks the bolt off in the hole. He calls and says “Come get your BMW, I’m done with it!” We had to flat bed the vehicle down to Green Bay, and ended up with a $1,200 bill. Now I have my 40x60 pole barn with a CONCRETE FLOOR. I will work on these repairs until I drop, or one drops on me!!! BE SURE if you’re older that you have known mechanics in the area with BMW experience. Thank you, Steve

Hello there! One question there is a washer that holds the bolt on the lower pulley, do you remove that before install?

Yooo is there a specific position you install the tensioner, does it fit in a specific groove?
@MechaniclifeJDM2 жыл бұрын
It has a big locating tab built on to it, making it only fit one way. Make sure you use a new bolt if your old bolt was aluminum (aluminum will feel unnaturally light weight in your hand) or check it with a magnet, aluminum is not magnetic. The other suggestions I would offer is to clean out the area where the tensioner sits so that it can sit flat on no dirt or debris, so that it can maintain its torque and not loosen with time vibration and load, observe your torque procedure without fail, an aluminum bolt will have a light torque for initial clamping load then an angle which leave the bolt in its elastic state more commonly called torque to yield, the steel bolt just has a torque spec, hope this helps, good luck, thanks for watching, like and subscribe!

@@MechaniclifeJDM yes 2012 e70 with the N55 Had an issue getting the fan out. Then again an issue getting the tensioner in properly…. Literally took me 4 hours …. Which after starting the car up with the new belt on that the harmonic balancer was wobbling… which needs i need to redo the entire process again once the balancer comes in… 😑 But after the install. It wa shuts as much tough getting it back in as it was pulling out … safe to say i popped my cherry on doing a tensioner and belt replacement lol
@MechaniclifeJDM2 жыл бұрын
@@AnthonyMichael504 weird, did you fold in the flap on the fan as shown in the video? It still takes a certain positioning to get it out though. Bummer about the balancer, but make sure the mounting surface is clean and you torque your hardware correctly going back together with it. Good luck, follow up, cherry popped!

Im curious as to why you feel that way, especially since most feedback seems to be positive, how can it be improved in your opinion?
@seankendall8599 Жыл бұрын
I noticed that the belt you removed was numbered 8PK 1475 and the new belt was 8PK 1478, I presume a little longer. I have the same bmw x5 2012 and I’m struggling to get the belt over the alternator pulley, it’s very close but won’t go. I was sold the 8PK1475 belt as a direct replacement, but could it be wrong in your opinion?
@MechaniclifeJDM Жыл бұрын
Did you pin the tensioner properly? Another suggestion I have would be to slip it on to an idler for the last pulley, rather than the alternator because it has a lip on that pulley Follow up, let me know how it goes, also sometimes it pays to have a helper on the ratchet, controlling the tensioner to get you just a little bit more slack
@seankendall8599 Жыл бұрын
@@MechaniclifeJDM yes i fitted a new tensioner with the original pin still in place and torque correctly. Good advice about two sets of hands, I noticed I could get a little more out of the tensioner, tomorrow my friend is coming over to help, I will update you.
@MechaniclifeJDM Жыл бұрын
@@seankendall8599Was the tensioner held by a steel bolt or aluminum? Be sure the torx is seated all the way in on the tensioner before pulling on it and make sure that your friend is strong, being punched in the face by a long handled 1/2” drive ratchet sucks. And yes, provide updates, this may help others as well.
@seankendall8599 Жыл бұрын
@@MechaniclifeJDM tensioner bolt is steel so I reused. I cleaned the surface well with carb cleaner before fitting the new tensioner and double checked the torque. That’s the plan, to get the extra give from the tensioner then try and slide the belt onto the idle pulley last Fingers crossed it works. Watch this space👍🏼
