Quick note here - It is a good fix however, do not seal the new cap in the groove with sealant. The cap is designed to suck air up around the diaphragm on the inside of the cap. If you place sealer in the small space of the cap - as shown - this blocks the air from being pulled into the diaphragm cavity. Place the sealant on the out side of the lip of the extrusion on the valve cover and then snug the new cap over that. Seal with some aluminum tape until the sealant dries or just leave it on. This way there is an air tight seal on the new cap but not on the interior of the new cap - this allows for the diaphragm to breath...NO squealing.

It's more than just replacing the CCV with that top part only. The whole valve cover has vents and air tunnels that get clogged and if not replacing the whole Valve Cover problems will still continue like loud whistling and humming after just replacing the Valve cover gasket only as the whole valve cover with build in CCV should be replaced... Ebay $90 to $140 for complete Valve Cover unit which includes the valve gasket already on it...

I did mine PCV replacement immediately after I drove the car so everything was warm and it was very easy to make a small cut on the side and pull out whole PCV assembly without even tearing it in to pieces. Unfortunately, howling NOISE from the front main seal did NOT go-away. When I started my X5/N55 on idle for about 5 minutes, the noise returned back, while car was ruining and noise was present, I carefully loosen the oil cap and I felt very high vacuum built-up, which was relived by opening Oil Cap and the howling noise was disappeared. After putting back Oil Cap, noise started again. So it is clear that there are many pressure regulating valves/ air ducts in the Oil Cover and some of them may be damaged as well. Before removing faulty PCV, I connected a 1/8 clear rubber tube (30 cm ) and other end slighly dipped in to water cup and I see it sucked water immediately because orange diaphragm of the PCV was broken at many places and also became brittle , after replacing PCV, the water sucking was not observed that means new PCV is not leaking to atmosphere. Noise issue confirmed that there is other pressure regulating hidden valves are faulty and which can not be replaced so my next step is to replace the Valve Cover.
@wadeconner32002 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this tip! - My squeal just started today. I put a tube on the PVC cap hole and yes, can move air thru it. Also, the squeal goes away as soon as I pull the oil filler cap off (lots of vacuum and hard to get off) This tells me that the PVC valve itself is not working and there is too much vacuum in the crank case. I'll try the PVC hack first and if that doesn't fix it, I'll buy a new cover. It sucks though as I just replaced the cover due to an oil leak about 5K miles ago!

Just a tip for people replacing just the pcv valve, make sure you put only small amount of glue on the outside of the housing not on the cap, same spot as per the oem valve. Too much glue will cause the new diaphragm to stick to the new cap which will close the valve and not operate correctly. You will end up hearing the squealing sound again like in this video as the diaphragm can not move freely.

I have a rule that would've prevented you from having fix this and then finding out it isn't fixed. Think of it as assembly pages in a parts book. Next hire assembly. For instance, there's probably a page dedicated to just that pcv valve. The next hire assembly is the valve cover itself. Always, when you can and money isn't too bad, go to the next hire assembly and replace that. A lot of times the lower assembly part affects it's next hire assembly. But use your skills to determine also. This case, knowing there are multiple pcv valves, devices, etc. it would've been a no brainer to replace the valve cover, especially with almost 100,000 miles of heat treating on it.

It is not the excess pressure that makes the noise... It's the flow of air though the broken valve when it fails to close when the specified level of vacuum is reached inside the engine. You should have tried opening the oil cap while it was whistling, you'd be struggling to lift it because if excess vacuum. edit: the failure to fix is probably due to the hight of the new valve being incorrect, or too much sealant ending up inside the valve, or the new valve not sitting exactly parallel to the old inlet...
@AlecKristi6 жыл бұрын
Also, if you don't fix this issue in time, the crank position sensor will fail next, because its internal seal can't hold the excess vacuum, and it starts sucking in air & moisture though the electrical connector.

It's good to know that it is just the valve cover, and not anything else like the crankshaft pulley or the belt tensioner /assembly. I will be attempting to do this valve cover job myself as your other video made everything easy to understand. One thing I would like to know before I start the valve cover job is: would you be willing to provide a description of all the tools need to do this job. I would rather know exactly what parts I need versus by a bunch of tools I may never use. Thank you again for your post.

HELP!!!!!!! I am getting the Error codes 28A0, 2D5A, 2C58, 2BEA after changing the PCV. Do you recommend changing the Valve cover. I tried changing the Wall Cover seals as well. Before changing the PCV I just had error 2D5A and 2C58 with rough idle and engine reduced power message but engine was having power

Vehicle Virals, Do you happen to recall the brand of Valve Cover you picked up as a replacement? I have found a few on Ebay for cheap but would like to pick up something that is quality. How has it held up?

Hi there, I replaced a water pump for my f10 535i xDrive 2012 and did the bleeding and everything worked fine, few day later vehicle started overheating, I checked the water pump by activation method and didn't seem that it works! Diagnosed the system and got the code 20A909 ! What can the real reason be for it to stop functioning?

Hi, I’m having the same issue, do you know if that cap also fits into 328i 2009

Great Video. I do the same at my n53 530i. My dealer want to replace the complete cover for 700 EUR. I am from germany and it is a shame to say this, but the new BMW are in my opinion scrap. I drive e30, e28 and e39 and these cars are durable and reliable and in this time i like my BMW. But my e60 lci had so many problems that a hate now this brand. The price go up and the quality go down. BMW is not the same than before.

Hi Bud... question. have you installed a oil catch can on your N55, i see lot of folks are doing it on N55 and N54 motors... any advise?
@VehicularDIY3 жыл бұрын
I didn't, I'd say the N54 benefits from it much more than the N55 but it's a good upgrade either way.

Good video. I was reading the flash point of motor oil is only 232 deg F. I wonder how safe it is to do the heat gun on the cap while still installed? anyone any thoughts?

@drone10285 жыл бұрын
When you see the price for this, you'll wish it was the belt. 😂

Wow. That' s really cheap. A friend of mine bought a new one, for €379 (apr. $430)at the dealership. We didn't know it was at the aftermarket at that time😔.
@Killermonkey15942 жыл бұрын
I have nearly the same noise but its not nearly as bad and it does it at normal idle when the car is warm too, its now evolved into misfires as well. Ive replaced the valve cover, belt tensioner, idlers, ac compressor, anything i can think of. Nothing has done anything and its only getting worse

Did you find a fix?

@@RafaelEscamilla some have gone to the TURBOCHARGER AIR PRESSURE BOOST SOLENOID VALVE as a culprit as well.

Mine usually comes about after cold starts letting the car warm to temp an then getting into boost. I can shut the car off then back on and goes away. I will say when this noise is present my boost drops drastically.
