In this video I install the Puig rear tire hugger to stop all the dirt from the road getting shot all over the rear suspension and electronics. Also since I don't have luggage racks and panniers installed, I feel the hugger makes the rear tire area look cool.

Hello Martin, thanks for the message. I appreciate you tuning into my channel from U.K. The winters are mild in Texas compared with our friends in the Northern regions. I just came back from a ride about an hour ago and it was 50 F (10 C). As I don't have proper winter riding gear, I just wore layers and was comfortable. What do you ride? Happy Holidays!

@@Texas2Tires Thank you for the reply, I subscribed a while ago to your channel, I also have a R1250Rs, sport model in yellow, I really enjoy the bike, it’s relatively light with a superb smooth powerful engine. I tend to bimble around the U.K. and Europe with a few mates, it’s a way of life really. Keep riding and stay safe. Thanks again. 👍

I've experienced similar problems on my 1250GS and found the puig hugger on there improves things a little, but doesn't solve the issue totally. I've fitted a MachineArt mudsling which I think you can also get for the RS and that is far better at protecting the rear shock and the other stuff on the bike itself. If you also want to try and keep the crud off yourself then I've seen elsewhere that the frame infills help in this area. One thing that's not recommended is fitting both hugger and mudsling as they rub on each other. I've fitted both but have trimmed the hugger on its front bottom edge and on the side by the swinging arm to create a clearance between the two so they no longer rub. I've also used blue lockthread on the hugger as the 3 top hat nuts that hold the hugger to it's mounting bracket have come loose on mine in the past.

Thanks for sharing your experience. The mud sling is definitely better, but I personally don’t like the look of it. I rarely get caught riding in the rain, so for me the hugger is more of an aesthetic purchase. But there are those occasions where there’s an unavoidable puddle at an intersection from the city over watering the grass and flowers.

Thank you for checking out the video and thanks for the compliment. I really like the hugger. However, BMW should include one stock. Without it, all the electronics under the seat get blasted with road muck.
@glenwilson5280

I put one on my 1250... Looks good but that's all. it's too short at the front as muck sprays all over the suspension linkage and as it goes narrower at the front muck sprays over the exhaust and swing arm. That's the same at the rear as the hugger goes narrower and muck flies off the tyre past the edge of the hugger and sprays the exhaust and under the seat. Also it is too short at the rear and muck flies off the tyre and onto the overside of the hugger. If the hugger had been made wider and longer it might be useful. It's only plastic and could easily be done at the factory with a new mold. I live in Northern England with quite a bit of rain and this hugger is impractical. For some sunny country OK. Be warned.

Thanks for checking out the video and sharing your insights. Agree with you’re . It doesn’t rain that much where I live and when it does most people don’t ride in the rain because we don’t have to. But I understand in the UK if you didn’t ride in the rain you wouldn’t have many opportunities to ride at all. Safe journeys!

This is not the first bike i have it with, previous one was R1200R and it silently did its job I even had no clue it is a) an option b) not a bmw option c) so much overpriced option consisting of piece of plastic and mounting bracket! So when i bought the RS, i even didn’t pay attention for the hugger. If only i knew, i’d dismount mine from R before sell to save on buying a new one

I have the Wunderlich version ( it is the same item as far as I can tell) and it has now been on two RS since 2015 and around 25k miles. 5:00 mins on your video of the fitting instructions, numbers 9 and 10 I covered in grease as there is swingarm movement, torque arm against rear bevel, affecting this bolt sleave spacer but not the rear bolt number 7 There was minimal polish from this movement when I swopped the hugger from my first to the second RS so it is worth adding some lubricant. I would think if this was dry/seized it would be a problem as the suspension flexes in this area which could cause a crack on the hugger bracket against the fixed brake caliper.

Hi Dave, thanks for checking out the video and sharing your insights, great information! The RS should really come with a rear tire hugger as stock from BMW. Without one, road crud gets thrown all over the rear electronics.

@@Texas2Tires Agree entirely on the "fashion over function" as I also fitted the bmw Aus/Nz rear mudguard as it is wider than the slim-fit original. I found on my tours across europe, plenty of tunnels in Norway, where you enter with a wet bike and all the road dust inside flicks up around the rear lights and as well as indicators.

Looks great!👍🏻 I really wanted to put one of these on mine, but the sporadic reports of these Puig huggers snapping off at the connection point on the arm scared me off. I sure wish the R/RS would’ve come stock with a tire hugger like the S1000R..
@Texas2Tires
@Texas2Tires 2 жыл бұрын
Well I'm hoping that won't be the situation with mine. I followed the instructions for torque settings. I've heard about tire huggers snapping off, but those were mostly the cheap knock-offs not the brand name ones. However, there may certainly be some brand name ones that snapped off as well. Fingers crossed!!!

Have you ever thought of putting handguards on your bike or do you think it would spoil the look. Over here in the UK we have to think of more ways to keep hands warm !!!!
@Texas2Tires
@Texas2Tires 2 жыл бұрын
My friend in Houston, Texas put insulated hand guards / warmers on his RS. I won’t do that as I don’t think I need them. But they look OK on his RS and with UK weather I would probably get them.

Hi, can you share your experience with it since installation? Reduced sling, no vibrations or it getting loose... I'm getting my RS soon I'm thinking of installing this immediately to avoid mucking up the suspension and ESA behind it. Wondering if it's worth it.

Hi Ivor, thanks for the question. I'm very happy with the Puig rear tire hugger. I don't typically ride in the rain or on dirty roads, so can't really say too much about heavy muck. The few times I was caught in the rain, it definitely helped protect the electronics / suspension area from getting overly dirty. As far as getting loose or vibrating, I followed the torque specs and have not had any issues. I've seen online people saying theirs came off while riding or got loose and rattled. I suspect they had a faulting product or more likely they didn't use a torque wrench and follow the specs. If you decide to purchase it, I hope you like it as much as I do. In advance, congratulations on the new RS. I'm sure you'll love it. The RS is an amazing bike!

@@Texas2Tires Thank you for the quick reply, I've watched a few of your vids on the RS before deciding over these past few months. The 2022 white/red scheme was simply a must and I can't wait to put down some serious miles this summer once it's delivered. I'll order the PUIG in parallel, while I do ride in poorer weather when it catches me then the whole bike is more or less due for a clean but mostly it's regular dry use and tire (rubber) fling that's a pain to clean off my CBR and I reaaaally don't feel like doing it on both bikes.
