Obviously got out of bed the right side that morning! But, yeah, unexpectedly the bike really fired me up from the moment I got it. Loved the looks, was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't more horrible on the highways to my final destination and then fell in love as the geography got ever more mountainous and the roads more twisty. Sometimes you've just gotta leave the objectivity behind and go with the passion - said a middle-aged grumpy old fart of a man!

your power comment made me think about my /5 pure model. Im 33, raced in AMA, and owned many high powered bikes ranging from 40hp to 200hp and the R nine T makes 107hp feel like 180 with the sheer grunt from 3-5th gears. It takes absolutely off and THAT is what I love about it.

I love mine, though mine is a ‘19 Scrambler, so slightly different. But one of the reasons the horsepower number is less relevant is because the motorcycle is such a torque monster at any rpm, even low rpm. It makes it an incredibly easy ride when going slow and plenty of power when pushing it hard.

I have this exact model here in the USA/NJ. Just picked it up this past November. It's absolutely Stunning to look at. My model has the rear speed-Hump which makes it look that much better. The color combination just POP's and it's just so eye catching. And there's just enough power and torque to make things Fun !! Love it !!!

Don’t let the secret get out in these bikes ;) This has been my most favorite bike I ever owned (and even I’m part of the PlayStation generation), and I regret selling it. If I could only have 1 bike. This would be it. They are the coolest bike to own. Very few bikes you can sit and just stare at for hours and admire the craftsmanship that went into it. I've been out of the biking scene since 1990. Used to ride a Yamaha FZ 750. I recently visited a BMW bike showroom. I had no idea that Bee Em made such machines. Back in my day they made big tourers for the police. And this bike is a shaft drive. Zero maintenance. I don't think I ever saw a shaft drive bike back then. Bikes sure have moved on. I might make my glorious comeback.

And I bet you're enjoying it. Bikes are like my other passion - photography - where I find myself disappearing down the rabbit hole of thinking I need the latest gear for fulfilment. Not so, it's the picture at the end of the process that counts, like biking it's the ride itself that counts and you can ride something old or cheap or different and still get exactly the same enjoyment. Forget changing equipment, at least for a while, and learn to enjoy and exploit what you've got. Which, to be fair, sounds exactly like what you're already doing!

I have an 1150 GS and ride it in the Australian equivalent of SA, in the State of Victoria. I have had it since 21,000km and ridden it through our summers for 11 years. It has never overheated, thanks largely to that great oil cooler and the pots hanging out in the breeze. You could never say the same thing about a bike with about the same capacity such as a HD sportster, that has a pot up front and one behind because in that configuration it gets very hot in the Crown jewels region of the body thanks to that rear over heating pot. I love my Beemer though now days my hands are not up to the type of clutch work required in twisty riding, or long distance throttle grasping. Still, my brother who was a policeman and involved in some police bike club said that the 1150 and 1200 GS models always blasted sports bikes into the weeds on Australian roads, because they were better on rougher surfaces and in tight twisties with such great neutral steering. I proved this, before I had even heard that story, leaving my brother on his SV 1000 10 minutes behind me once, on exactly the tight twisty type roads as the ones he described riding with his friends. So it is always the rider not the bike. He asked me why I was a better rider now than when I was young and just had to say it was the tyres giving me confidence to push. He said he couldn't make his SV even go around corners.

I have the 2017 R Nine T Scrambler, and its a beast! Its extremely heavy to move about, i.e. to wheel it in the garage! Its a real bitch in slow traffic, it can't handle really slow speeds! Its either going fast or not! it doesn't like slow speeds, the gear ratios are out!! Also on the motorway, it could easily do with another top gear, as I say, they really screwed up the gear ratios! In the summer when it gets reasonably warm, and you are stuck in traffic, the engine temperature can soar to 130C! , and when riding in the summer, the heat from those two air cooled cylinders, literally cook your ankles! However, they are a blessing in the winter. When you park the " Beast" you have to be extremely careful with the camber of the road, because, with the camber, it really leans very deep, it almost feels as though it will fall over!, and is actually hard to right it , without some effort!" The gears are clunky, and even on a well worn in gearbox, you have to get the clutch/ gear synchronised change, absolutely perfectly, for it not to clunk! its more luck than skill, if you manage to change gear without at least one clunking one of the gears! Because of the "Canbus system" whereby everything goes through the electronics controller, if you want to add some extra spot lights, and not have to spend a a grand or more to get them professionally fitted! which is nonsense! you have to connect to the battery directly with a make shift wiring circuit! I added 2 LED spot lights with an in line fuse and hidden switch, for under a hundred pounds! they work just fine! Same with adding power to my top box, needed to add a makeshift wiring circuit. You cannot extract the battery to change it, unless you spend an afternoon watching KZbins, on how to access and release the tank and lift it up!! Same hassle with the air filter, you need to lift the tank out the way to change it! Moreover , even if you wanted to service the oil change, do you have the electronics to reset the display that the service is done? probably not! So servicing has to be done by BMW and that's expensive! So from the view point of a practical motor cycle, it fails miserably. I can't figure out whether BMW purposely designed the battery to be so hard to access for changing, as with the air filter?, just so you have to take it to them to get them changed! But for sure, the electronic controller forces you to go to BMW for servicing, adding any extra lights and other equipment! The seat that came with the bike, enabled a maximum of 30 minutes of riding, before your arse became clinically dead! and I have a well padded arse! So you may ask, if its so bad, why did I buy it? and from new? Well you don't buy a bike with your head, you buy a bike with your heart! And all the issues I have discussed, only come to light as an owner!! When looking around for a new bike, my heart was stolen by the sheer ruggedness and beauty of the Scrambler! I once had a woman with a baby come up to me in the high street and comment on the looks of the R nine T! As to performance, well despite being a tub of lard when still, when its goes, it can really go!, and you can throw it around, and is best on twisty roads! So despite all my gripes about the practicality of owning it, its a beast of a bike , and to be quite honest, you would have to want a death wish, to use all the 110 horses it has hidden inside. It commands respect, it has oodles of power, it loves to be thrashed as its a quite high revving engine , despite having two pistons 10 cm diameter each?? In summary, its a beast of a bike, expensive to maintain, need to service it via BMW ( they got you by the balls there), but when you ride it, its got that something special, you know you are riding on the back of a powerful beast, and you know it has the power, but as they say in the superhero films, "with great power comes great responsibility. I love the bike despite all its shortcomings, and when I park it, I always tend to look back at it, as I am walking away from it! Buy one, if you can put up with the costs of running it!

@@chrishart8548. Cordoba blue is by far the best colour, but it was only available for the basic model. I wanted a few toys, so I went with the white sport colour scheme.

Can't go wrong, also a great bike; more sporty, more powerful and a great compromise between outright dynamism and practicality. Wouldn't mind one in the garage myself!

Great review Mat. I love my 2020 Urban GS, it’s probably my favourite in my small stable. It’s just so great for local rides - bring on summer! I changed the rear shock and spring, it made a good bike really great. It’s a keeper!

I sat on one at the dealership yesterday (719 loaded). I rode INTO the dealership on a Royal Enfield Interceptor 650. Honestly… I was expecting to love the r9t the way I loved the Int650. But that’s not what happened. It felt so… tiny. Probably a blast to take to the cafe. But I’d get monkey butt so quickly cramped up on such a little thing. The happy ending? I rode out on a 2016 R1200RT and left my Enfield behind. 😂 There’s a bike for everyone! This might be it for you.

This bike is beautiful. I love my r nineT pure, but I would be lying if I said that I wasn't a little jealous. Oh well. I guess I just have more customizing to do. I could see myself shelling out for those mirrors this summer. They look so good!

One of, if not the first of the big manufacturers to make a retro bike? Erm, xjr1200, zrx1200r, most Triumphs, Ducati Hailwood replicas, a few Hondas and I’m sure a few others too

Man... What a beauty. Timeless looking, pure and unique bike to me. If i could afford a second bike next to my KTM SAS it would definately be something like this. Once again a spot on review, thanks 4 the effort! Regards from Amsterdam.

I'll be damned if I ever buy a beemer (don't ask) but if I do it'll be a handsome streetfighter like this that doesn't lose its appeal under heaps of tech. And a superb video with awesome roads to match - well done 👍

Love my 9t, I've had mine from new in 2017 and I use it pretty much all year for commuting, playing out at the weekend and touring too. I even venture off road for the odd bit of green Laning in the peak District. For me the option 719 wheels are a must though, mine has tubes and they're a nightmare when a nail disturbs your day. I'm seriously considering stumping up the £1800 for a set for mine. Good fun chasing sports bike on a good twisty road too!

Yeah, I must admit I did surprise a couple of Spanish superbike riders, all leathered up and intent on scraping their knees when an old fella comes around the outside on a droning 'old' bike (wearing jeans and a jacket - armoured, of course). I always like to get a bit of a lead, screech to a stop somewhere clearly visible from the road and whip off the lid so that they get a good look at the old fart that just smoked them! Yeah, what a wanker, but childish or not I still enjoy it. If there's the opportunity to throw in a wheelie as well, then so much the better!
