Very nice vid. I gave up riding at age 25 because of the cost but now at almost 60, time to get back in as I miss the freedom. So I just acquired a 1999 R1100R from my neighbor having only 13,000 miles. He kept it maintained at local BMW dealer but last service was 10 years ago. Dealer wants $800 to bring it up spec and another $1,000 if the breaks and fuel lines fail testing. My other neighbor, a Harley rider, has talked me in to doing some of the service myself which I will certainly rely on your well-produced videos and viewer comments as I embark on each task. Thanks!

looks like the rubber gasket from the old oil filter stayed in the bike. probably going to need to retrieve that before putting in the new one.

Learmed a ton about this bike with these videos, thank you! Looking for some advice, adjusted valves but the clutch side pulls harder when we go to balance throttle bodies. Anyone know why?

I just bought a 2000 R1100R. I wanted to check the health of the right side spark plug. To do that I would need to remove the head cover. You did not show that, why? Are older models different?

These videos are very handy. I have a 99 r1100r and love it. Which Spark plugs do you use? Do they come pre gapped, I think they do or you would have said that. How often do you change your Spark Plugs? Do you do it with every oil change? Thanks again for these videos.

I have a feeling that the oil you are using are for bikes with a wet clutch. Probably not harmful, but maybe not a good idea. I think these engines runs very lean and not rich. Mine does. Runs almost just on air ;-) I have not seen a plug as black as yours and I seldom change them. Good how to video anyway and a nice looking bike. Ride safe!

The oil for the bike is okay as the gearbox is a separate oil.as for the spark plugs they do look a bit black as the camera did not give a true colour, But apart from that thanks for watching and Ride safe to

Yes, and that might cause a little bit more friction in your engine! I think that regular car oil is a bit cheaper and might do a better job. Manual states: Brand-name HD oil for petrol engines of API classification SE, SF, SG; combination with CC or CD specification.Once again - its nice to see a clean and well kept machine!

I would really also change the brake hoses. If they are 20y old original (?) and are propably full of little rubber grains inside if so. Atleast mine were. You can get new stainless steel hoses from motorworks.co.uk. Another common thing are the electronic wires in the front behind the lamp. They are too tight and I would loosen them a bit before they get broken. 3rd thing is the HES-unit which wires will broke sooner or later becouse the heat. Should change (atleast the wires) it atleast after 100 000km. Havent done it yet in my bike so would love to see proper video of that.

Why do 10w40? The engine is designed on the base of Mineral Oil. Also if you change from one to the other you can get an engine damage

If you still have the original tool kit it should have the spark plug socket. You won't need to grease it either... You should NEVER use adjustable pliers to pull the plug caps off as excess force could damage them internally. The tool kit should also have a puller specifically designed to extract the plug caps without damage. Also, I noticed to MOTUL oil did not specify it was 'Motorcycle Oil'. With this bike and it's dry clutch, you DO NOT REQUIRE 'Motorcycle Oil' and the 'friction modifiers' needed in engine-oil bathed wet clutches. Save your money and by the correct grade of synthetic automotive oil. My plugs look tan brown, indicating a good fuel-air mixture. Is your bike burning oil making them so carbon-covered? I noticed the oil filter rubber seal DID NOT come off with your filter. This is quite common. The problem is if you apply the new filter before you remove the old rubber seal you are pretty much guaranteed to leak. (I've heard this is the case, but I've never experienced it, as I always check to ensure the seal if off and clean all the surfaces before screwing on the new filter). I own a 2002 BMW R-1150-RS that I do all the maintenance, and it's been stone reliable, running like the day it rolled out of the showroom after 150,000-km.
