I really appreciate your BMW "Is it clapped out-Not until my wallet taps out" series. I also picked up a super high mileage oilhead and have been doing these repairs as well and even though I am a factory trained and master certified outboard wrench its always nice to get tips, tricks, and most importantly get a visual on the procedure before beginning. I applaud you taking the time to put this out here and encourage you to continue-you are helping the riding community!

Very helpful, thanks for taking time to explain not only what you are doing but why you are doing it. One small addition that might be helpful: We are installing the different clutch components 120 degrees apart - 180 degrees would be directly opposite each other, so the friction plate would end up in the same location as the ring gear. Also, I'm not aware of any "throw out bearing" - I believe the pushrod is in direct contact with the diaphragm spring. (?) Maybe something I can learn here? Thanks again for all the detail!

Good video, thanks. I have done a few of these and find its easier to remove the box with swingarm and final drive together.. need extra hands but if the paralever bearings have no movement, then it is heaps quicker. Cheers

It is kinda unusual that motorcycles, which have been around for a quarter of a century, are still relevant in 2023. I have R1100RT 97' and drove 14 thousand kilometers across Russia this year. It's a great bike, but it lacks cruise control and electronic idle speed control. Anyway great vid, everything necessary is clearly explained. Thank you from Moscow. 👍

Great video. I was thinking about an RT to replace my Pan. Now I do not think so. I have cars whereby replacing the clutch is easier than on the RT. Swapping clutch plates on a Pan or a FJR (also both shaft driven bikes) is a lot easier. Less than briljant engineering from BMW, looks like their current cars... At least that's how I see it.

While the 1100 is not known to have a rear main seal leak issue like the 1200s, wouldn't it still be a good idea to replace the rear main seals while you have the bike torn down to that level?

With all the respect for BMW who really know how to build engines I am not very enhousiast about how the recent BMW motorcycles are built together. With cables everywhere and a spline lubrication whereby you have to break down the complete motorcycle is nothing less than a shame. When cars would require a similar break down customers would run away and never return. And some fairing to cover it all so that everything looks tidy ..... no that is not my style of working. Amazing that I do not hear BMW motorcyclists complain about this construction.

@AnalogDude_ 2 жыл бұрын
good news for you, cars require the same handling. remove the gearbox, remove 2 or 3 engine mounts, gearshifter linkage, air filter and maybe others parts, lower or lift the engine, remove driveshafts if it's a front wheel drive to replace clutch plate and pressure group. the Telelever front suspension is cool and superior as wel the paralever, no noise.

Driveshaft splines and/or universal joints. What is the condition of the fluid in the transmission (not the engine) and the fluid in the final drive? You asked the question on this video, so to confirm you have, an R1100 ?

Could you do me a favor? how long are there transmission guide pins, what metric diameter, what thread and how long the thread is. (i used to make these from left over parts from cars like stretch bolt from cyl heads and so, it helps a lot on cars). I also would like to know the measurements of the clutch plate centering pin, the max and min diameter, length of sections. I have seen a car where one of these bolt came loose and the gearbox was destroyed having a big hole, than i started to use a blue loctite. What was the mileage of the bike in the video?

I respect the mechanic who works on boxer motorcycles. It’s such a pain in the ass. So is shaft driven. Maintenance free. But when you do. You’d rather just change a chain drive. I’ll never own a BMW motorcycle at this point. Just because most are ready for all this. And it’s likely gonna cost thousands. If not what the bike cost.

Welcome My father owns a bike with an odometer of 3000 km and he has not driven or operated it for 20 years due to illness and I want to start it and I bought a new battery and the tires came out automatically, should I replace them also What do you advise me to work without problems, thank you
@RodRidesWrenches
@RodRidesWrenches 2 жыл бұрын
Before you do anything drain and replace the fuel and engine oil, transmission and final drive oils they will all be toxic garbage and will potentially rune your day and your bike. Remove the spark and put a little oil in the cylinders using an oil can leave the plugs out and turn the engine over but for no more that 10 seconds. Do this three times to lubricate the engine with the fresh oil. The put the plugs back in and try and start it. If your fuel pump and filter are not completely gummed up you may get it started. I would strongly suggest removing the fuel pump and changing the filter. Use a strong carb cleaner on the pump before reassembly. Don't trust things like brakes or tyres that have been sitting. Go through the lines and change the tyres they will have at least flat spotted from sitting. The brake fluid will have spoiled and will need flushing at minimum your rubber brake lines need a good check over and replace anything that has a bulge or leak. Good Luck!

I’d rather have this motor in a side by side or mini sand rail. In a motorcycle you pay someone to do this. The bike is literally built around the motor.
