Mr. Old Mechanic, I am also a mechanic and I do routine maintenance on my GS-1200 year 2012 (AC). I like to see the care with which you take care of your motorcycle, it calls my attention to the fact that you only intervene in your motorcycle when it is completely clean. Care and passion, I am also like that. A strong hug from an admirer of yours in Brazil.

Hi Ze, it brings a big smile on my face knowing that there are a lot mechanics out there with the same passion for motorcycle maintenance as you..! As you noticed I love to doing my maintenance on a clean bike. So please keep on commenting on and over my video's. I love to read how YOU guys are doing your own maintenance, and ofcourse I can learn from that too !! Someone is NEVER to old to learn new things huh.. A hug for you and please take care, stay healthy..! Greetz from The Old Mechanic, ride save 👨‍🔧--->🏍

@@TheOldMechanic Mr Old Mechanic, glad to receive your feed back to my comments. I'm on my second BMW R1200GS, the first one I bought 0km in 2008 (SOHC) which, later, with 75 thousand km, I switched to the current year 2012 (radial valves DOHC) triple black which is already with 61 thousand kms, moment of change the alternator belt and spark plugs, I have all these spare parts here that I bought in the USA for a much better price than those practiced here in Brazil. I will make these replacements right here in my garage, better now with your teachings. Subscribed and following my new friend, Old Mechanic, thank you.

Greetings from the Flat Lands of South Dakota! I absolutely love your Videos! Thank you so very much for what you do. I purchased a 2013 GSA 1200 last June (oil cooled, just before they changed to air cooled) and it has about 22000 miles on it. I'm doing everything you post and probably saving about a billion dollars. I'm but a lowly carpenter so this is about the only way I can afford such a wonderful bike! Keep doing what your doing!

I discovered your youtube channel a few days ago and I instantly loved your contents. Very precise! Really love the care that you give to the bike. I really agree with you when you say that is better to perform your own maintenance intead of relying on other people...even with an "official shop". I try to do almost anything I can do on my own because, as well as you, I discoverd bad things made on my highly paid bikes/bicycles, cars... Last one: I had my ktm sxf 250 engine rebuilt and one year later I discovered (because of a coolant liquid gasket leak) that the propeller was not working at all. The mechanic did a bad job and, instead of replacing the propeller he damaged, he decided to install an external tooth lock...that did a poor job. So, the lesson is: learn how to properly do one thing...and do it yourself! Suggestion: in order to solve that rounded bolt in the transmission block, try to use a bolt extractor or, through a small dremel disc you could dig a groove and use an impact screwdriver to get it loose.. Once this solved a broken pinion bolt... thank you

The speed sensor is the correct place to fill it up. Not the stripped bolt you pointed out

I had no problem getting the fill plug out, but the professionals rounded out the drain plug (overtightened). Luckily, with some heat and forcing an SAE allen wrench in, I got it out. I won't give BMW the $30 they want for a new plug, but will modify the damaged plug.

My dear Old mechanic, watching this video I think that the filling hole for the rear end (cardan) is located in the top of the same arm (opposite on top of the draining plug), not from inside (the rounded plug) or from the abs sensor. I cannot attach a picture to show this in a better way. Cheers from Mexico.

On older GS there is no Fillplug - you have to Do this through the ABS Sensorhole
@hollowaysteve
@hollowaysteve Жыл бұрын
On the earlier 1100 and 1150 there was a proper fill hole. On the 1200's BMW decided they would make the final drive 'sealed for life' . They quickly changed their minds and now recommend every 12000 miles. But they never changed the design of the Final drive which means you have to use the ABS hole. I use a syringe attached to a thin tube.

Now on my second viewing the only comment I would make is always make sure the filler plug is sorted before you empty the gear otherwise if it is not you could end up with an ampty diff and no way of filling it ??

Hello The Mr. Old Mechanic, thank you for your amazing videos. I really like watching them and I would like to pull out and check, lubricate the complete cardan. Wouldn't you like a video to disassemble the whole cardan shaft? I bought R1200 GSA 2011, it has driven 74.000 km a wanted to check it. thank you for your answer
@TheOldMechanic
@TheOldMechanic 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, I already did that rightaway after I bought my Beemer, and I didn't had a youtube channel. But I am sure that intime I am going to check the complete cardan axel again and ofcourse I will make an instruction video about it. Greetz from The Old Mechanic, ride save 👨‍🔧--->🏍

Hi I have the same bike - I don't think anybody striped out the fill plug. It fills through the sensor. They probably did this to save money.

I think the people who take their bikes to a dealership, need a reality check, I they think a mechanic is going to be doing oil changes on their bikes, It's probably an apprentice who does these jobs, but you still get charged top dollar for the experience 😂😂😂😂😂

I bet someone used an impact on the filler bolt and stripped it. Could probably grind it and make a slot for a screwdriver to remove it. I like those 4 ply Charmin shop towels 😂

That drain plug is not f**cked up, nor is it a drain, nor fill plug… the full plug is further towards the front of the bike and the drain plug is underneath.
@mmaaddict78
@mmaaddict78 Жыл бұрын
@@smoll.miniatures I never said it was the drain. The guy that made the video wanted to use the bolt as the filler and said it was stripped, that's what my comment was about. I believe the conventional filler is at around 10 or 11 o'clock as you look at the rear end.
@hollowaysteve
@hollowaysteve Жыл бұрын
@@mmaaddict78 @twelfthscale There has never been a proper fill hole on the 2004-2013 air/oil cooled 1200's. BMW sold that iteration of bike as 'sealed for life' They realised they made a mistake and announced in about 2006 that it should have 12k miles oil change but never added a fill hole so it has to be done through the ABS sensor hole on all those bikes.
