A little chat about the best biking jacket for middle range cost. My current jacket is nearing its end and it's time for a new one. So, what's the best for not too much money? RST? Richa? Oxford?

The battle against the weight is rear. I (Richard) have the same issues. I've had my stupidly expensive Rukka suit about 6-7 years. It's still waterproof, so in the end, reasonable value?? Flat Cap is right about retirement. It's on my mind now at 60. Hopefully, I'm taking the winter off to get a taste of it. Your bike looks in great condition

@@Banditmanuk The GS has been looked after by the previous owner. Got a couple of little bits, but overall a good bit. I looked at a year younger 1250 but it was 4k dearer 😱 I bought a RST jacket today, purely because I found it the best fit for me. Although, I did manage to squeeze myself into a 10XL Richa which was very loose everywhere 🤣

Looking good, Nige - not you, the bike 😂. As you know, I'm a fan of laminate jackets. As the breathable membrane is attached to the outer shell thats one less layer to worry about. Yeah, my Rukka Armaxis is heavy but that's a function of the heavy duty outer material and D30 armour, not the fact that it's a 'pro-shell' laminate. The weak point on mine is ventilation, so it can get a bit warm but newer stuff is better in this regard. I did a shit load of research and, 10 years ago at least, the only membrane that came close to the efficiency of Goretex was the eVent brand. Dunno if that's still the case. You're right though - you get what you pay for. That said, the top end Richa laminated gear is supposedly excellent for the money - much cheaper than Rukka, for instance. My Rukka is over 10 years old now. I think I've washed and re-proofed it twice. It's still never let a drop of water through 🤞

I know that one of yours was bulletproof in all that rain we rode in on the Scotland tour. Going up to Swindon today (you know the place, where Ash loves to not spend money) to try a few on. Gonna get a cheaper one for now while I'm in diet mode.

The GS is looking mint Nige! All my gear is Richa, great quality and reasonably priced too. I suppose you only get what you pay for at the end of the day. I’d love Rukka gear but your talking silly money but again, they are too quality gear

@@BMCMOTOUK Cheers Sean. I've really only ever had Richa and always found it pretty good. This one I've got now is quite a few years old now, and was only about £120 new. It's giving up the ghost though, so time for a new one.

@ I’d probably avoid the laminated jackets as they can make you sweat. My Richa jacket has a waterproof membrane that can be removed and if it rains I usually chuck on my Richa waterproof jacket. I also use my waterproof jacket when it’s cold as it completely cuts the wind and cold air out lol

@BMCMOTOUK yeah good point Sean, I was reading earlier about the laminated and sweating . Also, the Goretex is very heavy apparently

@@Tojj29 A decent jacket is all that’s required and keep a waterproof jacket in the top box to put on if it’s cold and wet. Best of both worlds and it’s light and takes up literally no space!
