Old vs new - similar yet different. To make a long story short, the major difference between the two is the looks, throttle response - which in the 1200 is much quicker and suspension adjustment - in R 1200 RT controlled witch flick of a switch (ESA). On the other hand you don't really feel the difference in weight or its distribution. The level of comfort is also almost identical - but remember that to adjust suspension, you have to get off the R 1150 RT and spend some time adjusting the knob. Also, the R 1200 RT's gearbox is more precise. As you can hear in the video - transmissions of the RTs sound pretty much the same. Wind protection may be a little bit better on the R 1200 RT. Performance - check the race of the two. Somehow you can feel that the new one is more powerful but can't really see a huge difference in a straight line. The R 1150 RT is equipped with Remus slip-on exhaust. Adds nice deep tones to the boxer engine's sound.

Having owned both bikes, the difference is like night and day. The new RT with the twin cam motor is silky smooth, torquey, with an authorative exhaust tone. Set the cruise at 30mph and cruise with no surging and very accurate speed control. The huge difference is the weight and its impact on handling, especially at low speeds. The old RT rides like a Harley and the new RT is crisp, agile, and accurate. Much less exhausting to throw around than the heavier RT. Hopefully BMW won't blow a good thing by moving to the new water cooled boxer engine. Like all new bikes, keep it plugged in on the charger at all times as these bikes do draw current when parked and off.

R100 RT and R100 s rider here, I like the simplistic nature of the old air-heads. They work OK. They are not the latest or greatest of anything, but they behave well both in town and on the highway, and (important to me), they are easy to service. It may be a while before I am in the market for a 1200 or a 1150, The old girls are just too good to give up.

To be perfectly honest, I could easily afford a new 2017 RT if I wanted one, but I still prefer my 2002 RT. Yes, my bike is 14 years old, but it still looks showroom new and I think from a styling perspective the older body style from 2002 to 2004 RT and even the model prior to that 1996 to 2001 RT looks more appealing than the current RT's. When I look at my bike, I see aesthetically pleasing lines that are sculpted, round and contoured. In a word, it has very "sexy" lines. The bikes made from 2005 to current simply look bulky, they have sharp edges and are very robotic looking. the movie, Transformers is what comes to mind, every time I see one. From a technical standpoint, the new bikes do have more to offer and for a rider who cares about those things, then the new RT is the way to go. For me, I couldn't care less about whether a 50cc difference in engine size makes the 1200 slightly faster than my 1150. I'm not looking to win a speed contest anyway. I rarely need to go WOT anyway and when I do, I'm always impressed by what the engine is capable of. Secondly, I suppose the traction control and electronically adjustable suspension is very nice to have, but I've been riding for 30+ years without them, so it's not something that I feel is important to me. I rarely need to adjust my suspension setting except for when I ride two up. On those occasions, I get off the bike, and adjust the preload with the convenient hand dial located under the side panel. It takes less than a minute to make the adjustment. Again, I realize for some folks they want the latest and greatest technology and for them, all the goodies the new RT's offer is important. To me I have to like the way a bike looks before I throw a leg over it and go for a ride. To me, riding is a feeling an emotion and it begins with how sexy the bike looks. The same goes for women. Nobody wants to ride an ugly fat chick, either. See my point? My bike is comfortable to ride long distances, offers superior wind/rain protection from the knees down (lower fairing) and has plenty of power to ride two up. I have ABS, heated grips, electrically adjustable windscreen and stereo. I really couldn't ask for more.

Love my 98 R1100RT though if I hadn't already named it The Red Baron (for aggressively knocking over my 1100 Zephyr on its first visit of my garage), it would be named Big Bertha because man is it huge. Sexy yes, but in a fat chick way, just like your 1150RT. Would I sell for a 1200RT, yeah if money was no object but this is my Winter bike and really can not fault it, at all for the way it handles Winter. My little GPZ600R is great for Autumn and Spring as is the Zephyr and my old Fireblades do the Summer a treat and I'll bet the lot cost me more than a year old 1200RT!

Great comparison; really gives you a "feel" for the differences (and similarities). Love my '02 RT, it's given me 8 years and nearly 60,000 miles of smiles. I'm sure the 12rt is an improvement performance wise, and it does tempt me from time to time, but I do all my own service work and the electronics on the 12 give me pause. Maybe, with a GS911 in hand, I might give the 12 a chance down the road. Thanks for posting!

Nice video! Sort of inspired me to go the next step after having had the R1150RT for about half a year. Now ridden both over 10,000km and I have to say, no doubt it my mind in what saddle I'd like to be. The only thing I liked more about the R1150RT was lower rev in traveling speed on freeways. I tested in the 2016 R1200RT as some claimed it had a different gear exchange but noticed nothing major. This year I've done of 17,000km on the R1200RT, in all sorts of weather through Europe. Originally planned to do the same trip with the 1150 but have to say glad I upgraded. The gearing is smoother and the handling vastly improved on the 1200. The ESA especially was a welcoming addition to have, besides of traction control and the rest. Since I've tested the latest LC with all bells & whistles possible to get still not sure I'll rush for it. The LC engine is fantastic and has a surprising amount of grunt whilst compared to the air-cooled but does it really matter that much on long hauls? Not for me. in 2017 I'll try a whole range of different touring bikes to see if there really is anything else I'd desire. Also plan to try the S1000XR. But right now I'm perfectly ok with the Air-cooled R1200RT :)

I must say that I've seen the new 2014 RT on saturday and really liked it. Test rode it a few meters and it seemed very light and even easier to turn than current RT. Overall, I was impressed. I only have mixed feelings about the front fairing which looks a little too big in comparison with the front wheel - looking from the side. Gotta wait for higher temperatures to have a proper test ride. But so far I'm happy for you and good luck with the brand new one!

I’ve had my custom painted (original owner) 03 RT since it was a few months old, and it has been flawless for 16+ years. I have had more fun on this than anything, which is saying something because I have a giant vehicle collection. That said, this year the ABS sensor quit, and it’s basically unrepairable- the part is nowhere to be found. Additionally, it would be about $4k to fix. Ultimately I had no choice but to revert to conventional brakes, but that actually improved the feel, and cost $200. I plan to ride Herman the German for as long as he’ll have me.

I do wish the dash was a little more modernized. I will buy a newer BMW sometime to add to the empire, but this bike overall was a winner for BMW

Nice, let's hope it will run great. I stumbled upon somebody's comment who mentioned that BMW stopped supporting the R1150RT in terms of parts already and it may be hard to get some of them. I wonder how accurate that is and if it's regarding all or just some rare parts. Anyhow, better to learn about that in time. Didn't mean to scare you but I got surprised with that same policy with a fun car that I get myself recently and got pissed off a lot myself.

@@VToldsMotoShow Some parts can be indeed in backorder for a whileor difficult to find, but there are ways to work around this. Mine just came back from a big service, took a while, but she's all good. Best is to join one of the BMW forums, they can help you out very much. also, used or refurbishedparts can help a lot. (and it is also very cost-effective in some ways, because new original parts can be ridicously expensive from time to time. )

I did not get much out of the video, the notes were helpful. I have a '04 R1150RT I just finished a 6 day 1400 mile ride, including all the twisties in and around the Smokey Mountains... great fun. I am happy with my RT. I relize the newer R1200RT has better engine and suspension... The new new R1200RT has water cool now. However I am trying to stay simple and away from bigger and more complex. The new F800GT might be my next "SPORT TOURING" bike or a used R1200RT '07 or newer. I just don't want to get rid of the R1150RT, but don't have room, money or time for two bikes.

I had the F 800 GT for a few days last year and didn't like it much. The engine is far from being agile and so you need to rev it really hard. It also becomes very hot in warm days. I'm glad that you're happy with the R1150RT. Sounds like you've got some serious comparisons over the years, so this makes it count even more. I wonder if you'd like the first R1200RT. I think that it was a sort of a breakthrough in an RT lineup. If you ride the newest one, then you'll get the vibe of the first R1200RT, maybe there's a bit less power but there's also less weight.

I have a RT1200 2007 and wouldn't trade for the newer bikes. BMW has taken care under expired warranty ABS issue, fuel pump proactively without any issues, replace fuel sensor gauge twice due to our Ethanol nonsense. My friend is selling it in a practically showroom condition visually and technically everything seems to be fine, but the mileage is probably quite high for a motorcycle? I would like to buy it but I am afraid that something will suddenly start to break down due to the mileage. ABS was regenerated a week ago but this is a fairly well-known ailment of this model from what I have read and unfortunately expensive. I assume that after regeneration it will ride longer. The 1100/1150RT with V-stream medium windshield has even a better windprotection than the 1200RT.... 1100/1150/1200 greatest touring bikes ever produced. The BMW quality has been declining after the year 2000.... Riding qualities are amazing on all of these bikes. AMAZING. Very quick on curvey roads, lot's of torque, low fuel consumption (5ltr/100km), lot's of comfort, great breaks, lot's of luggage space and they ride like a sportsbike. The whole package gives you the best bikes ever produced. I rode them all, never got lost riding in a group of sportsbikes, most of the times even quicker than the guys. Only on the straight you get blown away by the sportsbikes........... let them have the times of their lifes :)

JDoubleOP You’ve obviously never owned an FJR. Smoother, faster, better handling and more reliable. The R series BMW’s are good bikes no doubt but can’t keep up with an FJR or Concours 14 which are true “sport” touring motorcycles.

i got also an '04 R1150RT for over a year already. I really like it and I've been into rallies a few times and did another one the other day for just under 400kms. but his time I found out my saddlebag above the exhaust tip where the exhaust blows by under the bag melted and put a hole on it, burnt my t-shirts inside. does anybody knows if this is a normal fact on this bike? it's an stock OEM exhaust and saddlebags on it..
@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow 10 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen saddlebags on these bikes so far. Stock panniers are perhaps a better solution. It the stock exhaust gets really hot, then it may make the bag melt if it is touching it. If it's not, I wouldn't expect it to do so - I'm surprised. I've seen similar situation on a Suzuki DL 1000 on which the bags were laying directly on the exhausts and melted a bit leaving black mark on them. But there are two casn so they do not get as hot as in the RT. Swap it for an aftermarket exhaust - the do not get so hot.

I wonder if they solved the excessive vibration in the clip-ons (bars) with the K12RT?? The K1150RT would make my hands numb after 40 miles... Have a K1200RS now. Much happier with this bike. More power and less vibration. Not to mention better looking.

I own R1100RT for more than 10 years. It,s 1998 year model. I have put about 44.000 km in 10 years on it. The things that broke down: spead wire-snail, front break switch, back break switch, clutch handle bar. Nothing els. In 10 years... Well this bike is so low cost ownership that i will not change it for newer model until i retire. Even then i will put it in the corner of the garage. I hawe put higher wind shild on it. Change original radio for newer one and put some stickers on it. Just today he will take me acros Slovenia, Hungary, Romania, Croatia... 4-5 day trip... Shit thera are things to be done today. Upload new mp3 play lists, put the clotes and equpment in suitcases, put the Garmin on... and the sheap whole on the seat... What an advanture will it be with bike with more than 110.000 km on the clock.

i tested the 1150 and the moto guzzi norge & fjr & st 1300 & concourse.. all three of the Japanese sport touring bikes were ovens to ride. I mean I cannot believe people can ride these things they are that hot on an 80° and warmer day.. like sitting in front of your oven with all your gear on in the oven door is open..what a pity i went with the guzzi because i can tur the ABS off for those times when I get stuck on a downhill gravel road or on wet grass in a camping area or, three times I rode to work and got caught in a sudden snowstorm and had to ride home in the snow. If you have ABS and you’re in the snow, you don’t have brakes.. I just sold my Norge to update my stable after 14 years. I never had any trouble with that bike. Now four months later, I’m sorry I sold it
@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow 2 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, it sometimes happens that we miss a particular thing after getting rid of it. That's a case of myself too by the way. Interesting approach to ABS however. Nowadays only enduro motorcycles can have an option of switching ABS off - for offroading. Now in snow I'd never ride myself. I rode right after a hail storm on a bike with no traction control and this ended up in a crash as the tires were like rocks. I'm glad you were fine.

Now this is an interesting experience but hey, some say that those more modern models tend to lack their souls ("more") too. Actually that's correct when it comes for example to the generic screens that are the same across almost all the models (with a big exception for R1250RT).
