A rare opportunity to ride this 1965 BMW R60/2 came up at Haywards of Cambridge. Not a bike they were selling but a bike that came in for recommissioning. Tim had recently bought it through Bonhams from a private museum/collection, The Anthony R. East Classic Motorcycle Collection.
This BMW R60/2 was supplied to Slocombe's of Neasden and first registered on 30th December 1964. The machine was registered to its first owner, a Mr Dallen of Wood Green, North London on 8th January 1965. It was then bought by a Mr Minifie of Wednesbury, Staffordshire in 1968; registered by a dealer in 1970; and then sold to a Mr Davies of Brierley Hill in July 1971. Next owner Mr Billingham of Stourbridge purchased the BMW in May 1975. Tony East purchased the machine in 1994, the V5C recording the previous keeper as a Mr Toothill of Ruislip, who had acquired it in November 1989 (the old-style V5 records six former keepers prior to Mr Toothill.

What a lovely looking bike, you can still see the DNA of this bike in the latest R12’s etc. never seen headlight mounted mirrors before and great indicators! The view of the clock in the headlight as you ride is enough to make whatever the price worth every penny. I love a slice of Black Forrest gateaux…

What a lovely machine! The R69 and the R69S were 'it-and-a-bit' back in the day when I was a spotty youth; one of the blokes a few streets away had the '69S and we used to drool over that bike, which also had the bar-end indicators. The 'Blitz' name on the battery simply means 'Lightning', which is quite appropriate, though 'Blitz has a different connotation for folks of my vintage! Speedos located in the headlights were very common, back in the day; my 250 and 350 Jawas had the same arrangement , as did a host of British bikes.

A bit more info for you. I owned and restored a 1960 R60/2 back in the 90's. Truely wonderful motorcycles. The front earls forks had 2 positions to change the trail between sidecar use and solo riding. The front brake was very good when set up correctly and under hard braking the front end would actually rise up!! The front and back wheels are interchangeable. Mine would cruise all day at 80-85mph. If it lacks some top end speed it probably has sidecar final drive gearing in the rear hub. Solo gearing was available which gave a faster top speed. To change the gearing though is very expensive due to the bevel final drive. Just utterly marvelous bikes. Cheers for that.

What a lovely machine. Great to see it being loved and used. Back in the 1960's a chap called Danny Liska rode a R60 from the US up to Alaska and then all the way down to Argentina. He wrote an excellent book about it called Two Wheels To Adventure. It's nearly two inches thick and full of photos and drawings. Quite hard to get hold of now but one of the best Motorcycle adventure books ever written. BMW North America used some of his photos as adverts at the time. Well worth hunting for the book.😊

Super review TAYM IIRC when they were sold here they were double the price of a Triumph Bonneville. A top class bike that no one I knew could afford. My 1971 M125 Puch had the exact same end of handle bar indicators. German and Japanese engineering was rebuilt after the war with American aid. The British were paying the Americans for war loans right up until recent times. Meanwhile British engineering was using the same machines that were worn out from 5 years of war work. I am not complaining, just saying what happened.

The UK didn't pay off its First World War debt to the US until May 2015. The interest alone cost the country 5.5 billion pounds. The final repayment was 1.9 billion pounds. The WWII debt was finally paid off on 31 December 2006 with a payment of 83 million pounds, being 45.5 million to the US and 23.4 million to Canada.

These are really great bikes. They still look as made in the 1930's. I have an R50/1 from 1956, 500cc, 26hp. The R60/2 s a 600cc. They don't have a choke, you have to tickle the carbs. I once tipped 100 kph, but generally I don't exceed 80 kph. The bike handles very well, very nimble due to the skinny tyres, and is very comfortable indeed. I have the Hoske aftermarket cans, which give a nice(r) bark and the same 'bulls eye' indicator lights. The brakes on mine are really good, especially the rear brake, which outperforms the disc brakes on my modern bikes. Mine doesn't have a passenger seat, I think it looks much nicer with the small black rack that you can get instead. BTW you forgot to turn the headlight on, for that you have to turn the ignition key to the right. I bought this bike after I had seen a clip on youtube of two South-Africans (I think of German origin) who were riding a black and white one, partly filmed out of a vintage aircraft. Instant love! Greets from the Netherlands.

When I was 28 I dated a woman twice my age...was your experience anything like this? Like going on a date with an older, more mature woman? Much to learn...I can attest. If you answer positively I will go out and buy one this weekend. 🙂

In UK you guyy have that rubbish fuel E5 E10 is that 5% Ethonol? In NZ 🇳🇿 we have 91,95 or 96 depending on gas station brand & the good stuff 98 unleaded which cost the most but you put in your bike or most people do.Petrol is also $3 a liter😲 for 91unleaded no not a gallon a liter😲🤬 & the good stuff 98 is $3.30 a liter & can cost $35-$45 to top up tank🤬.NZ 🇳🇿 must be one of those most expensive places for petrol being at bottom of the world.

We can get 99 octane in the UK for around £1.66 a litre at the moment, but theyve just started putting up to 5% ethanol in that as well.

We do have Ethanol but not every gas ⛽ station had it & think 🤔 it's 10% & you'd need a list of gas ⛽ stations that have it if you used it. The last 5yrs of Holden V8 cars they could use it to be more economical & some other cars too.Our best fuel is 98 but not every gas ⛽ station has it I went to 3 gas ⛽ stations yesterday before one had it but they were all close together if it was only one I'd get the highest they offer 95 or 96 depending on which Company it is.Mobil usually has it but there are some Mobil's that don't have it. Also if venture out to rural communities they only have Diesel or 91unleaded available 1 pump of each & card only but 91,95,96,98 it all mixes in just the same unless you got a high end Sport car then you need 98 or if you've tuned your motor to 98 etc but then you wouldn't live Rural.
