When I was searching for a M4 F82 I had the same problem do I want a car with a potential risk of engine failure, but i didn't quit en bought a stunning austin yellow M4, I have done a lot of research on different forums al over the world, I came with the following numbers that the chance to have a spun crankhub is below the 1%. The big fact is you will allways read or hear the horror stories about a broken engine etc. Now in to detail, your sensor on the timing belt is really sensitive, if your gear on the crankhub slips a little you already get a drivetrain mallfunction and you only need to replace the crankhub and not the whole engine, the tollerance is not that big. The next big thing i came across is that the crankhub issue happends a lot on cars with a low mileage. I've tuned my car by Mosselman stage running 540hp and 720nm torque (76000km) and they had only one car with the crankhub issue, they only replaced the crankub for a locked version, one that will never come loose. The instant increase of rpm's is the big evil doer on the crankhub that in combination with more power. In comparison with the rod bearing issue on the m3 e90/92 this issue happens less. great video :)

Apparently a lot of cars now use a compression joint at the crank hub so this is not just a BMW thing, however it does just appear to be this engine giving some problems with both stock and tuned cars. It’s disappointing as I would love to buy a F80 M3 but am put off due to this issue 😔

Yeah it's a bit overblown. The likelihood of having a crank hub failure is pretty low on stock cars and if you do you'll recognise it pretty quickly and can fix it before complete engine failure.

The crank hub failure is over hyped. Its talked about by people who don't have an M3/4 or garages that will "fix it" for £2k !!

I agree with you 100% if folk are still worried get a plate put on 300 to 450. Now you have piece of mind.

Just bear in mind if your car is under warranty or extended warranty putting on a plate void the warranty. Also if you change the hub for the "crank hub fix" your warranty is voided.

My car is 2016 I'm out of warranty so I'll admit I am worried but I have come to same conclusion as you and I'm getting plate but I never drive my car hard coming from a 200 bhp this car is a bit much for me power wise so no mods power wise I respect the car when driving after selling my soul to buy it I won't drive it hard it feels awesome in economy sport is 2 much for UK roads for me. Lol had it in sport plus cold wet morning just to show my kid sound forgot to turn of car went 180 on a round about that lesson cost me 3k. So no more stunt driving ha ha ha. Any ways like your up load just subbed

Man I guess I'm not going to experience this so call crank hub failure!! Shit I've tuned it with 100octane, full bolt on etc...dct trans....and ran the shit out of it 130,000 miles now...guess that crank hub stuff is bullshit 😅😅😅😅

I think the numbers of failure are low and really depends on pot luck. My mate had his go while just cruising along at 25mph.....not full engine catastrophe but he had then opted for a crank hub fix. He's car was tuned. Only found out about this last weekend

The M4 looks nice. When you put the diffuser on, consider having the back quad pipes blacked out. It will look really nice imo. I moved on from the M3 & got the F90 M5 competition pack - loving it. I read a few bad things about the V8 engine. I just want to enjoy a high performance car. 🤷🏻♂️

How do you get day time lights and rear lights to illuminate ? Is it via Carly ? When I put side lights on it’s just rear and dimmed front day lights not full day time Bright white.

I have heard a figure of 3% of stock cars have spun the hubs. Yet, how many of these 3% were being tracked or consistently subjected to high load downshifts? I shall leave my stock M4 as is.

Probably a dumb question, but if you were to install an aftermarket exhaust on your car, would that void the warranty? Soon to be proud owner of a new m2c. Want to replace the exhaust eventually because I think the stock exhaust looks bad and sounds underwhelming imo.

You will lose manufacture warranty on any exhaust component....but you should get sime sort warranty from your new exhaust supplier. I wouldn't think you'd have any other issues.

I wouldn't worry about it out of all the M3 M4 and M2 comp how many have had a hub crank slip and it has to slip a bit before the the engine management cuts in to shut it down before any damage is done

Ask yourself if bmw have faith in their engineering why won’t they release figures on crank hub issues, also consider once the car is out of warranty and you have an issue bmw won’t provide a good will gesture. I will be having a crank capture plate fitted at Litchfield once my warranty expires for peace of mind unless it becomes a bigger issue in which case an upgraded replacement crank hub machined by Litchfield. Having dealt with 2 master bmw mechanics at two different dealerships previously I have more faith with independent experts like Litchfield who know the ins and outs of performance vehicles than main dealers who can’t even diagnose issues unless a part is completely broken as their diagnostic capabilities are a joke.

One model catastrophic oil pump failure issues, one model rod bearing issues, next model hub failure issues, another model drive train malfunction issues, another model serious throttle actuator issues, another model SMG pump failures, ECU issues.. Whew... I'm exhausted cause I owned three models with the previously mentioned issues. But remember everyone............... It's the ultimate driving machine and the Bavarian Motor really Works so you should be fine......

My M2c is at bmw now with suspected crank hub failure after on 1600 miles and 3 months old, it has been run in as per BMW’s instructions and run in service completed at 1184 miles, Waiting for bmw to confirm problem but if it does turn out to be crank hub failure it could happen at any time, I’ve been gentle with my car and it just failed as I was driving gently to traffic lights slowing down to stop.

Feel for you mate. Hopefully they get it sorted. As long as the car has not been modified you should have no problems with a warranty claim

DownShift Throttle thanks mate, yes it’s totally standard not been messed with at all so warrenty will sort it, little bit upset and lost a bit of faith but love the car still, they have given me and m5 comp while mine is in so ever sky has a silver lining! Great video!

Yes they were.....on my M140i they were spray painted which was an irreversible effect.....being wrapped obviously can be reverted back. Good job and I'm impressed to be honest

Someone pls reply...I might get my hands on a 2015 m4 with a stage 1 remap making 520bhp and an enhanced exhaust overrun....will I get a crankhub issue?is it worth getting this m4 or should I go for a stock one

Personally I would buy a stock one and get the work done yourself. Mine has the crank hub capture plate and is stage 1 - no issues. But I'm sure many people would say the crank hub capture plate doesn't help.

Mate I learnt this the hard way big time!! Didn’t know about the crank hub at all. Even after asking my mech and tuning company before i went for the first map. Long story short got 538bhp on the map and ran for about 2k miles and all fine then…. It went. Current £2k down fixing the crank hub and just found out my valves are shot still waiting on the price of that 😭 wish me luck

Basically even if your far is under warranty like mine and I attempted to go down either a "crank hub fix" or the "capture plate" the warranty on the entire engine is void even if i don't increase the power or do any engine mods. Once the car is out of warranty I think I'll go for the extended warranty anyway which will cover any such failings.....

I'm sure BMW tested the s55 engine to the limits and 430 hp is more than enough to mess around on the roads I wouldn't worry if it was a recall notice every man and his dog would be shouting about it but it's come from across the pond where tuners was getting 600 to 800 hp that's when it was started

the crankhub issue isnt just modded cars, its stock cars too. its not just DCT's, its manuals too. and its not just when driving very hard, it could happen when backing out of your driveway. its a ticking time bomb, that needs to be replaced.
