I’m starting a 2003 K1200RS project right now. Starts, but as soon as you give it gas, it dies. I’m replacing the fuel pump and filter, but after watching your video, I should do more diagnostics, and order that ring for the sending unit. Thanks for this video!!

I’m in the middle of a K1200RS project now. Bought the bike a couple months ago for cheap ($2k), and low miles (47k). Found out why after I got it home. It had the dreaded Klutchenslippen. Disassembled and found it was entirely caused by the o-ring under the big 30mm nut. It had aged, dried out and hardened, and leaked oil on the clutch. Rear main seal was not leaking, but I replaced it anyway. Tried just cleaning the clutch disk because it was plenty thick enough, but after all back together it was still slipping. I’ve got it back apart again and have a new disk. I also resurfaced the pressure plate and cover with fine, 240 grit sandpaper. Waiting on the special grease (ordered on Amazon) because the Honda Moly paste I used the first time migrated more than I like. Hopefully this time will fix it.

I did some work on the tank of my 2003 K1200GT and I replaced two of the three gaskets - I didn't replace the gasket around the sending unit since I didn't remove that seal. After I put the whole thing back together, that was the one that was leaking! I had to cancel a road trip while I waited for the new gasket to arrive. Now I just change all the gaskets when I have the chance.

Probably a dumb question but should I be able to blow air through both hoses coming from the bottom of the gas tank (not the ones with the quick disconnects) ? According to the service manual they're both called vent hoses. One of mine is just a hose that just wraps upward through underneath the frame (free on that end) and the other one goes to what I think is the charcoal canister. i can't blow air through one going to the canister. My bike shuts off as soon as I throttle it (and also turns off after a few seconds on idle) so I dunno if it matters whether I have the vent lines switched or something else.

Tricky one that, good to see the abs is still working ok, I've got an early 1st day of the UK launch one of these in yellow with the grey and black chequered design on the lower fairing, it's a great bike and only 15,000 miles, the ABS has been disconnected at some point though, and I have a little bit oil seeping oil out of the Bellhousing, it's more like a tiny amount but if you put your fingers on it you can feel it's just a bit oily, the oil level isn't dropping though..always enjoy your videos Chris..keep it up..all the best from Scotland UK..

Chris, amazing how some of these anomalies show up in just about anything. Last anomoly in my RT was a strange one. Being an old bike with nearly 200000 miles, had a bad fuel pump commutator. Also the ignition coil primary circuit had oxidation in the kill switch creating resistance. The bike would run with an occasional miss similar to a slightly burned exhaust valve. With all this happening, fuel pressure and flow was good, voltage was good at the coil, hall sensor was new, carbon thingy is gone :).. The only thing that would give a clue is current ramping with an Oscilloscope. The coil had insufficient current under load, the fuel pump was missing 1 commutator out of 8-10, not sure how many the BMW has. Put a salvaged VDO fuel pump and cleaned kill and ignition switch with Deoxit. Bike runs better than it has in years. Funny, the bike never died, just ran like crap.

I do recall you saying something about this.. about a year ago.. Cant not believe the owner didnt put 2 gallons of gas in the tank and try to start it... but the fuel filter.. OMG it was a 04' just wow.. Over all a lot of work.

Thanks for the video, Chris. Very informative. Fortunately my '03 K1200RS never sits over the winter. In another video you explain why to remove the charcoal canister on the oilheads. Please confirm for me that as a K owner I just need to keep an eye on that vent tube. Or should I be performing a charcoal canister-ectomy?

I actually suspected no fuel as you progressed with your testing. Glad my Sertao never sits, Except when it is at the Dealer for warranty repair of the valve cover. on #5 now.

The first I would do is to hold the bike upright and try. Swing up the sidestand , surprising how often the safety switch malfunctions.

Yeah. That, AND put a gallon of gas in it. (And, I know you're gonna say the key didn't fit in the gas cap......but then ALL THE MORE REASON to suspect OUT OF FUEL!!)

Good detective work on this one.
@michaelscott3565 жыл бұрын
WRONG! He believed his gas gauge when he should have just "shaken" the bike to hear/see if there was any fuel in it...and he should have done that LONG before doing a compression check. Who OWN'S this bike?? Regardless, the OWNER should have known the bike "went away" (for the Winter) with an empty tank. So, shame on the owner, on TWO or maybe even THREE counts: 1. bikes should never stored without having the tank FILLED and the fuel turned OFF. 2. How in hell did the owner (whoever he was / is) EVER fill the tank if the key didn't/doesn't work on the gas cap??? 3. Once the tank WAS determined to be empty, the oil should have been changed because quite possibly whatever fuel WAS left in the tank had drained into the crankcase somehow. So, no, sorry.......BAD detective work on this one!
