Hey, does your steering return to centre naturally after torquing to 70nm? I'm going to do this job and just wanted some clarity on the final torque spec. A lot of people do it by eye, which isn't an exact science, and bmw use a very convoluted method of calibration.

Mines the same Karl, I’ve half tried this today, biggest problem so far is removing the engine cover (the heads of the bolts are so corroded)….after backing off the bolt one half turn I gave up as it was too pain full on my wrists (need to get the cover right off…needless to say I’m going to get some new bolts for the undertray as some might need cutting off) otherwise I’ll report back if this fix sorts it. Mine has always in my ownership had a very slight knock, front arms have recently been changed (to try and stop brake judder)….always felt the steering was marginally slack and my local Indy pointed out play in the rack on the last mot….and as per yours he rocked the steering up and down and you could hear a slight clunk.

Just did this fix today, used this vid as a guide, thanks. A few notes from my experience: - needed a better jack to lift the car from the center - had to find a 24mm socket in order to use that steering tool - the steering tool plug wouldn't sit flush due to that rubber when taking the top cap off so had to hold it in place with my hand. - it was torqued down flush on my car and very dirty! - i've retorqued it to down to a mm showing. - lining up the thrust piece with a mirror (best just remember it's orientation on pulling out). The steering rack no longer clangs going over pot holes or bumps on the drivers side, the steering is slightly more stiff, feels connected to the car and less vibrations at motorway speeds. I'm slightly worried about how much I've torqued it, theres 1m showing and basically I've torqued it as much as possible and then loosed in half a turn.

Can it be done from above
@jamesmcdonald34042 жыл бұрын
Yes, I've done mine this morning on my 320d. All I had to do was remove the airbox for access
@flyro20002 жыл бұрын
Yes it can on smaller enginec car, mine has the N55 so its a big lump

I have the same issue with my BMW X5, however all the kits show for every F series apart from the X5 and X6. Has anyone else used the same kit for the same car as mine and it worked?
@antosvs35714 жыл бұрын
Ok. You changed the piece. But what about the whole process of measure and adjustment of the mechanical play???
@adnanafzal66064 жыл бұрын
I think you can get away without having to do that. As long as its torqued correctly looking at the tutorials

Hi Jacob will this kit work on my 2012 E 90 . The VIN is WBAPP17080NN74299 . Thank you
@flyro20003 жыл бұрын
E90s use a different steering rack, they are hydraulic. Anything knocking on one of those will probably be tie rod ends or similar 👍
@flyro20003 жыл бұрын
Actually think its possible it has an electric rack on the late e90s... have to have a look and see. Should fairly obvious, if it has a steering fluid reservoir ect

Thanks for the tutorial! Does the car need wheel alignment or any programming of some sort? (Read this on forums) just to confirm
@flyro20003 жыл бұрын
Nope! Won't change anything to do with alignment or programing. Not a bad idea to get your car aligned every few years but this won't effect it

@@deadlyhydra thanks for the reply, yes mine is fierce, coming from the front under near your feet on the outside of car not inside car?
@jamesmcdonald34042 жыл бұрын
Why is everyone doing this from under the car? Unless you have access to a garage ramp It's much quicker to do from above the engine bay (at least it was on my 320d). Air filter unit off and there plenty access, bonus is you can fit the new one and have a drive to check the steering before fitting the airbox back on
@flyro20002 жыл бұрын
Depends what engine you have mate, mines the N55 so its a big lump and totally obscures view to the steering rack
@michaelwatkins68203 жыл бұрын
Not bad mouthing your work/video but if you take the air silencer out you can do it from the top. Takes about 20 minutes tops
@flyro20003 жыл бұрын
Can on the 4 cylinders, mines got the 6cyl n55 so there's no space above 👍
