Let me put your thoughts at ease. I can not thank this guy enough for this video. I've had this exact issue on my car and I been up and down the country paid one bmw dealership for 3hr to run diagnostics on the car at a cost of £450 took them 3 hr to find the fault (so they said) quoted me over 4000 for the replacement of the low pressure turbo. That's one bmw took it to the next one 2 hr of checking! This place works quicker than the last one highly recommend them, (NOT)£300 later quoted me over 6000 for both turbos to be changed. At this point I give up drove the car for over a year until I come across this video. We need more people like you in the world God bless and keep up the good work. Fixed it for free thanks to you.

did you use the computer/adjustment stuff or did you just tighen the actuator? because i dont have any of the expensive stuff he's using to do the adjustments but I do have an arm, and some tools. If I just tighten that will it be okay? or will my car just fall apart for some god damn reason?

Try loosening the 10mm lock nut, rotate what he did 3 times and tightening lock nut back up. Won’t hurt anything. If not find someone with ista. It’s free to download but big and you need an enet cable.

Now you did it, you knocked the BMW dealer out of a bunch of money. Just think as soon as the diagnostics came back with a fault code the new part would go on and the adjustment would have been made and the customer would see a new part and no more problems and that would be that. The customer gets a bill for 2k the part that is still good goes to the landfill and the replacement part probably won't last as long as the one that is on there now will last. Good job on using the dianostic tools and caring enough to do the job right and take care of the customer.

Love your chill explanation and easy thinking. Step by step, not shooting parts. You were asking yourself the strategy about closing the waste gate valve on idle. When on idle the next thing is driving, so turboboost is needed. The turbo is already in this position so it does not have to react on throttle but is already there. The airflow on idle is low, so turboboost or speed is never exceeded. All safe but ready to fire up! Keep up the good work!

Just got a 2017 x3 and saw this stored code p1290 and my bluedriver scanner identified it as the wastegate position error. And I dont actually need to replace the actuator I dont have access to Launch or ISTA so I decided to blindly adjust it, I did 3 turns, because as I said my issue is less severe. I was able to use a scanner I already had, a Foxwell NT 510 Elite to get the wastegate readings and zero it out. Took me about an hour of fooling around a bit but in the end it got set to within the desired tolerance. I got the one specifically for BMW cars and it was $189, I used it for a 2006 Z4 previously when I changed out the auto trans fluid (needed to get the trans temp). Great video, once again, thanks for showing us how it was done, I did find other info but this one was first and I was confident after watching this I could get this resolved (assuming the flap was not damaged or loose internally on the turbo). My recommendation: don't tighten the nuts until you run the process enough times and get it zeroed out. I used small increments of turning the nuts until the scanner showed me it was within tolerance. First time, I went the wrong way. Second time I overshot, third time I was close, 4'th time I was right on. I can say that the electronic actuator is very picky and it does not normally take more than 1/2 to 3/4 turn of the nut to throw it out of tolerance.

I said yeah let’s try it thinking that if it didn’t work they’d put old battery back in which was still new at the time. We’ll that didn’t fix the problem and they still charge me $500 bill total. Man you just saved me a ton of $. The local bmw dealer told me I needed a new turbo @ $6500, and I was experiencing the exact same issues once the engine warmed up. I checked the wgv linkage and it was making a little rattle noise so adjusted in the - direction a coulple turns, and now no more rattle and no more drivetrain malfunction.

same case with an X1.... bmw local dealer : localdealer: your wastegate fails, then me: ok change it, localdealer: not sell alone, we sell the change of the entire turbocharger that includes a new wastegate ....... ...... ..... pum ... I will try this repair and adjustment, wish me luck

@@fernandopadillapozos3673 did you solve the problem with the adjustment?
@billwasylenko15993 жыл бұрын
With the money you saved him he should have you do the oil change, you really saved the customers r a fortune. The dealer would not have done that. They would have replaced the actuator if he was lucky and the Turbo is he wasn’t so lucky. Should be an hour for diag. 1.5 at least for the repair

Any other mechanical would just replace the turbocharger it's good that Iven did proper testing and fixed the issue.

Absolutely, my Kia dealer replaced a complete turbo assembly under warranty, shipped it. It performed just as bad when I got it, apparently they did not noticed a split in half intercooler.

@billziegmond49433 жыл бұрын
Epic no parts required is correct! I would bet the stealership would said they replaced the whole motor. Then do the adjustment and charge the customer for N.E.W. part. I don't trust Express lube places for my HHR so I definitely wouldn't trust them with a BMW. Yeah to go Ivan!

Unfortunately most recent car models rely on engine oil to do so many things besides lubricating the crankcase and pistons. Cooling turbos, actuating valve timing, not clogging EGR valves... All these extra functions need that oil has to pass through tiny little holes that can easily get clogged with dirty oil. So this is what he means by *religiously* changing the oil to avoid major repairs later.
