BMW Valvetronic Actuator Motor Fault Diagnosis

If you are having starting issues, idle issues, cutting out or performance problems it may be the valvetronic actuator motor shorting out.
This video will show you how to test a BMW Valvetronic Actuator Motor to see if it is faulty using a meter.

Had my e90 die the other day. Come up with all sorts of valvetronic fault codes like sluggish movement. Pulled out valvetronic motor and test runs fine and ohms ok but still wouldn't start. So turned over the valvetronic motor with Allen key to move the valve train. Now she's running. Guess the valvetronic motor on the way out?

That is so simple to check it, mu mechanic said he cannot check if the motor is fault or not, i’ll tell him tomorrow

hi, carbon dust + oil = makes it conductive. it is possible to open and clean it.

Need help getting code 2a38 , vvt sluggish or open circuit it says, is it the motor or the sensor , hope its not the sensor jus did the valve cover and dnt want to do that again any time soon . ?????

@@paytonglenn5908 i did it , its easy make sure u use the allen key back of motor turn it lil at a time and tighten the 2 bolts on side of motor lil bit too , go back and forth between the allen , and the bolts the motor will pull its self in . After that use a good scanner so car can relearn the limits

Is my valvetronic motor faulty if I do test on the car and when touching caseing it shows 1 but when engine shows 159? My codes P2A67 and P2A6B Thanks

Im not sure but it may be because the terminal is connected with engine, but i’m not sure if it is. I don’t know exactly how it is built inside the caseing

Will the VVT throw a Eccentric Shaft Sensor code also?

Hope you get it sorted mate. Try and get a genuine used bmw unit if possible. I purchased two cheap unbranded units off ebay and as soon as I turned the ignition key the shaft spun and shattered the rear plastic casing. Looks like these units are inferior. The genuine item i fitted had no issues and worked fine.

My valvtronic is faulty. But i can reactivate it and no codes come out yet. But when i test the servomotor . The eccentric valve angle barely change when close and open. Is this a faulty motor or sensor? Thanks

And what if it doesn't show anything at "short" setting but shows 27kOhm at 200kOm ? Should there be absolutely no resistance at all or very high is acceptable?

Hi Andy McGovern. my E90 320i has been having issues it starts at one press, performance is still okay though i havent stepped on it lately what i get is idle issues. when its between 1 & 0.5 RPM the needle slightly drops and goes back half way then when it drops below 0.5 car goes off. or while driving this has happened twice in 2 weeks when i come to a complete full stop the car goes off. can this be the Valvetronic Motor? i havent serviced the car for well over 38000 kms i used a diagnotic machine and saw valvetronic error. can this be a false error due to non service or a genuine error? or maybe airflow sensor, fuel pump etc? im not sure. how far can i drive withouth replacing the VVT motor if its faulty?. hoping to get your prompt and positive feedback

Mukopa Kasali Hello! I have the same car... how many kms does the car have currently? what is the engine model? The N46B20B? Try this: take out your maf sensor and see if the wire inside is already dark or dirty, try to clean it with maf cleaner (not brake cleaner) and install everything again to see if your idle improves. If not, buy a new one OEM bosch, there is one which is inexpensive and works perfectly fine! Let me know if that helps. Don’t wait too much between services... i’m using one of the best oils MOTUL 8100 X-Clean+ 5W-30 and i only wait 18-20.000kms to change the oil and filter.

Mukopa Kasali Also, your problem is not de valvetronic motor, because when is faulty you can’t accelerate the car! This valvetronic motor is involved directly during the acceleration process... not only the trottle body is accelerating the car, both (valvetronic and throttle body) work together. When the valvetronic motor is faulty, the first symptom is limp mode with a check engine light. 👍

I got code p1062 new motors on both sides and nothing new battery nothing Checked wiring nothing

Same problem, Peugeot 207, I changed the valvetronic engine but it does not eliminate the p1062 code, the resistance of the valvetroic motor coil (new) is very low, less than 1 ohm. have you found any solution?

@@stleal I’ve found it to be a bad eccentric shaft sensor was broken and getting oil into sensor replaced it and solved my issue

That is just one way a motor can fail, misleading video.

What? Misleading? He showed you one way to diagnose a fault. It is up to you to go forward from here and make your research before you do actually anything. Nothing misleading. If you know more then you could have left your two cents here (for example like Dirty Hands did) that would have been actually usefull.

Correct mine was 1.7 kilo ohms resistance but motor was healthy in the car, it's not an accurate way to tell if it's failed.
