This happened to my 745 just other day from a storm and my dash went haywire and loss of power I tried to use my code reader and it would not connect with the car and I've used this code reader many times and it worked like a champ. Chimes that popped up, transmission fail,abs,power steering, parking brake fault etc and my power steering went out and all the other stuff that came up on my dash so nothing was working I ended up taking the back seat off and bam their was all kinds of wires full of water . I got my wifes blow dryer and a towel and dried it for about 2 hours then I tried the code reader and it worked so I erased the codes and started it again and bam everything went back to normal and the car is running fine now. I actually got this done today. Thank you Nathan for the videos.

duuuuude, you have just solved this mystery thats been killing me for 3 weeks now. after a heavy 12 hour downpour, the floor behind my left front seat was a swimming pool. the only thing i could think of was a broken vapor barrier, because 8 months ago, i had the regulator in the rear left door replaced. But i just couldnt figure out how the water could travel from the door unto the floor. your revelation at 7:12 was an epiphany. Thanks man. I dont wanna do the repair myself, its cold in tokyo right now. and besides, I paid for them to install the regulator. so im taking the shit back to them for them to seal the vapor barrier. big thanks.
@briancollins31778 жыл бұрын
Nicely done video. BMW originally used Butyl Rubber for sealing the vapor barrier. If the barrier has been previously removed it will almost always pull foam away from the barrier and the barrier will no longer stick in that area due to a thin layer of the foam covering the sticky Butyl. I used a plastic razor blade designed for removing pin stripes (auto paint supply) to remove the old butyl. New butyl is available from Autozone etc. Sold as windshield sealing strip. Butyl does not need to cure like the 3M weatherstrip and provides a thicker strip for sealing. Be sure to wear gloves when working with it,.....it sticks to everything. Clean up with paint thinner etc. There is some discussion that the actual problem is that when water drains through the door, it exits at the bottom of the door,....but the outer weather strip on the door prevents the water from draining out of the gap between the inner and outer weather strips. Some have cut a notch in the outer weather strip and they claim that doing that fixes the issue. Also, since you had mold, which can be dangerous to breathe,...spraying the door panel down with bleach water, or mildew killer spray from grocery/lowes etc./ best to lift the carpet and put something under it to prop it up and allow air in to help dry the carpet and foam from the under side,...also....spray the foam and the flooring with mildew/mold killer. If its your car,......just take out the rear carpet completely. It took 3 days for my completely removed carpet to dry sitting outside (was cloudy).

But where exactly is the water getting in from the outside? 5:51 you said rain runs down the glass to the seal. What about sealing up where the water gets in from the outside before it gets inside the door? Mine is a BMW 2000 750iL (E38)

I want to add to your one screw on the whole door panel. If you have an E39 with the rear window shades, that is the big window and the triangle window both have a window sunshade, but you need not to concern yourself with the little window sunshade unless you're removing the window for whatever reason. But, as for the sunshade for the big window, you MUST REMOVE THE WOOD TRIM. Use something with a plastic edge to it so you don't nick or damage the leather of the door panel or the wood trim, gently pry off the trim, once trim is removed, you'll notice 2 additional screws which MUST be taken out. Now if you want to use same stuff that the BMW plant used to seal the barrier to the door frame, you want BUTYL TAPE. It is a huge pain in the ass to work with, but the outcome is very well worth the effort. I'll tell you what worked for me as far as getting the old butyl tape off the door farme, the a some tape from the doorj, get a gulf ball size amount in your hand and mash the ball to the tape on the door and pull pack, it should be all one quick motion. Oh do NOT wear latex gloves, the tape will stick to the gloves and it'll be harder to work with. To get the residual from your hands, just pour some gas on your hands and rub, rinse and wash with soap and water.

Thanks for this video DIY. I'm having a wetness issue also. On my E53 I get wet carpet when it rains right inside the plastic threshold for the door. I removed the door panel and the water barrier (seems) ok and sealed well. I am trying to find one and will replace it anyway. I already have some of that black butyl tape. This all started leaking when we had a bad hail storm about 2 years ago. I have been putting towels in there to soak it up everytime. Thats getting pretty old!!! This is the only place it's getting wet. I recently removed one of the bottom door grommets to see if that helped but last night it rained and got me again. A friend suggested it could be the sunroof drain. What is the path of the sunroof drain? Wouldn't the drain leaking get it wet most likely along the B pillar also? Thanks for any help on this!!!
@intricate69275 жыл бұрын
The sun roof has 4 drains. 2 in the front, a tube runs down each A pillar and 2 in the back. Those run towards the C pillars and drain next to your rear window hinges.
does this only happen to back doors or also the front?

Do you think that all the seats can be affected by a draining problem of the hatch? After a 24-30 hours heavy rain, I found all the seats floor carpets wet, less the driver's one, while there was also a bit wet under passenger's sunshield/sun visor, around the lamp. I have this problem on my e65. I just had a bad winter and the car just hit me with a myriad of water issues. I solved most of them by cleaning my sunroof drains but u still have water coming in my front/rear footwells. I dried everything had it in the garage didn't drive it until it was dry, drove around in dry sunny weather no leak from the glove box area but my rear passenger footwell was soaked despite it being bone dry and not being exposed to any water. It completely puzzled me. I then took it thru a car wash to see if I could see if it was coming thru somehow from under the car....nothing in the rear got worse but it started dripping from a panel behind the glovebox so I'm pretty certain the front leak is the windshield which recently got replaced but I cannot understand the rear footwell water coming despite driving through no water or rain on a dry day. Could it be like an AC condensation problem? Is it migrating from the front? It appears dry under the seat just soaked around the velcro disks that hold the mats in place but like I said no water came thru in the car wash except in the front. I've checked the door vapor seals they positively do not leak. I cannot understand where the rear moisture keeps appearing despite it being dry and not in rain.
