Guide to replace turbo on BMW X3 E83 2.0D. With some inlet manifold and EGR valve cleaning
Worksho Manual:
workshop-manua...
Update March 2021: 212 000 on the counter still going strong
Update Sep. 2018, oil change at 198500km, still going strong
Update 13 May 2018
196 000km on the counter, still running
Update 22-01-2018
Close to 1 year, 12 000km, still running like a clock
Update 07-Sep-2017:
Particle filter and turbo can probably be taken off together, as one unit. Much easier to split them when these parts are out of the car. This may be very helpful, as it was the most difficult part of the way I did it. The turbo lower mounting bracket and oil drain line will be a bit more harder to reach though. And you still have to remember to disconnect particle filter wires of course...
March 2017, 179000km, turbo failed

The turbo blew on my X3 a couple of weeks ago and I was in despair. The repair was going to be around the £2000 mark at a garage and there was no way I could afford this..... So I found this video and went for it! £245 for an exchanged reconditioned turbo on Ebay, and another £100 for oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and new crankcase breather. A couple of hard day's work and it's done! Running better than ever! Thank you so much for posting this video, I can honestly say that I couldn't have done the job without it. Has brought home for me the importance of regular oil changes. Neglecting this was the sole reason for my turbo failure just like the one in this video. Thanks again, and for anyone thinking of attempting this job, make sure you have a good quality socket set and go for it, you can do it !

Very happy to hear about your success story and that my video have been helpful. How many miles was on your counter when the turbo failed? I think around 160 000km /100 000 miles is quite common life expectancy with 30 000km oil interval, witch very often becomes oil change every 3rd year . Was your EGR/inlet manifold soothed/congested like mine?

Kjetil Jåsund Hi, yes my car had done 112,000 miles and hadn't had an oil change for two years. The oil feed pipe to the turbo was blocked with oil debris, causing the turbine to break up. I had to get the car back on the road quickly as my wife needed it for work so haven't taken the inlet off yet, but the swirl flaps are next ...... I'll let you know how I get on!!! Thanks again for your brilliant video , kind regards, Mark

Thank you for this great tutorial. I was told by my local dealership that it would be $4000 to replace my turbo. I was wondering if I could do it myself. I have very little experience working on cars, and while you gave a great tutorial, I think in the end I should not attempt it. But your video did a wonderful job of helping me understand what would need to be done if I were to try it. Thanks so much!

What an excellent video and tutorial, thank you. I am about to have a go at this but on a E53 X5 and from what I can see it's fairly similar procedure. My turbo seals have blown due to a clogged crank case valve/breather assembly I think.
@kjetiljaasund
@kjetiljaasund 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I do not know X5 E53, but you are probably correct, many things are similar. The most difficult part to remove was the particle filter. The X5 bigger body may make this easier to access. Would have been nice if you left a coment here on your findings. :)

very good video, with clear instructions and torque values. My 520 E61 M57 TÜ2 has 430 Tkm on the clock, with the first(!) turbo. Two secrets, 1. use LL oil but change every 15-20 Tkm, 30Tkm exchange intervals are ridiculous. 2. never replace a turbo on an old engine. my worn turbo might cause a loss of 15-20 PS, but the lower pressure is a blesssing fo the crankshaft bearings, pistons and cylinder walls. So I hope I can avoid touching my turbo for another 100 Tkm. Nevertheless, after this video I will look at cleaning EGR and manifold, just as a precaution..

Late answer here, but interesting to hear about your car and very high km county, on the original turbo. Impressive. I totally agree with you about oil change intervals. I bought my X3 when it was 6 yer old, right after its second oil change... thank you

Kjetil.

Oil can "dissapear" into colant water for example. Among many other thngs, a broken head gasket ca cause this. Sorry for my lausy german language :)

Question. How many hours should it take for a certified mechanic to replace this particular turbo. I have a 2013 x3 2.0
@kjetiljaasund
@kjetiljaasund 5 жыл бұрын
Short answer: No idea I think BMW workshops have detailed descriptions on all kinds of repairs on all of their cars. This will also include how much time it will take to replace the turbo on Your model, Older cars may have stuck nuts and bolts and other problems that makes it difficul to accurately predtict this. Maybe I spent10 hours on this job. Never did it before. And another 10 hours googling and ebay-stuff. And 10 hours of youtube video making. If i did it every day then maybe 5 hours would be enough? Have you received any estimates from a workshop on this job?

To replace a turbo at a BMW dealer, is expencive - VERY expencive. I have a 2012 BMW x3 - and I suddenly got a "drivetrain failure" message on the screen. I took it to a dealer, and it was the turbo which was broken, and my car only had a mileage of 119 000 km. The price for replacing the turbo was 37 000 kr, about 3700$, but lucky I got insurance and just paid "only" 600$ - 6000 kr.
