UPDATE! If you are going to repair BMW X3 LED lights, first of all try to resolder parts in the middle part of circuit board (no parts needed to be replaced, the problem is in micro crack in solder joints). If that does not help, then try to replace TLE4242(G). Thank you!

I wonder if this is a result of lead-free solder mandates. Pure tin can revert to a nonmetallic form (tin pest), which is why you usually alloy a smidgen of lead in the solder. Until you're told you can't.

A bunch of message forums say that the problem is a poor design of the valeo board causing it to run hot and cause solder joints to fail. I repaired one by resoldering a common problem joint and it worked again for less than a month. This is the first video I've seen saying that this particular component needs replacement. I found a redesigned board on ebay that runs cooler and bought 4 for less than $40 shipped.

Bought the TLE4242 cheap from China on Ebay. Had a computer repair shop solder on the component and tails work like new again, thanks.

You can buy boards on eBay. They come from Russia. $20.00 each. Mine shipped fast! I repaired mine but didn't hold.

QUESTION >?> I have a 2013 bmw x5 35i ,3.0 litre engine i just purchased recently. my left rear trunk/hatch cover LED BULBS went out suddenly, I did remove the trunk/hatch cover light assembly.I noticed that there was corrosion on the # GE1057 (12 volt 21 watts) bulb receptacle and it was water stains in the lense reflector area, This 1057 bulb is/was working fine ,so water is an issue and possibly did get on the led circuit board,im wondering are there a part number i can get to replace the full circuit board or a part number for part repairs? will the TLE4242G work on my circuit board repair?? ty sir lovely video

Hi, thanks for this video :) It appers to be an common issue that BMW electronic often suffers from those soldering micro cracks over time, I'd already to resolder my I drive borad once (after 3 years). Since 2 weeks my board computer sometimes tells that the fog tail light is defect, I think it can also be solved by resolder the joints but unfortunately I couldn't find any instruction how to remove this inner teil light. I tried to remove the cover from the inner side of the trunk door but couldn't move it at all. Can you help me an tell me how to remove the tail light unit?

Hello! 1:17 I applied flux (use any type for electronics, my is FluxPlus) with syringe, it protects solder from oxidization during process. 1:47 I added a small amount of solder. More information could be found with words "soldering basics" or "soldering tutorial". Thanks for comment!

Three of mine went out! But it was not that part! It's a very small capacitor I think! I added solder to them! There are micro cracks in the original solder! Problem is that the fail again after a week of driving!!! I'm not the best at soldering so I'm sure it's me lol

Hi! Thank you. As mentioned earlier, please try to resolder the board first. Micro cracks in solder joints are the possible problem. I can't say anything about GAG222, so it is better to get TLE 4242(G), i think.

Great video! I'm from Sweden, so you have to excuse my sometimes, incorrect English. I have the same problem with my inner taillight, not working anymore. I saw another video that suggested another possible repair, soldering that little piece named R750. Apparently it's common with cracks right there?! Is it something you know of? it looked so much easier. My other question is where I can get the correct TLE4242, when I searched the internet it came up with many different endings after 4242. Thank you in advance if you take your time and answer me! Here in Sweden it's even more expensive than for you guys over there. The inner taillight is 250 $ here.

David Uppvik , first of all I want to thank you for your comment! That's true about cracks in solder! In my practice I repaired some of this boards just resoldering the plate entirely with hot air (or using owen). That means I applied flux on solder joints and heated that plate until solder melted. In this case no spare parts required. As for me, the easiest way to get TLE4242 is to order them on ebay, amazon, aliexpress, etc. Parts are sold like TLE4242 or TLE4242G, they both work well. Hope I helped you :)
