BMW X5 E70 35d, I lost 2 fuel injectors because of broken water shield on the bulkhead firewall

2 fuel injectors on my E70 35d shorted out because of a common failure of the windshield plastic trim water shield on the firewall had cracked.

This is just now happening to our X5 Diesel 2010!! We replaced all of the injectors but #6 keeps going out. So finally - (even after BMW said they couldn't find anything) - our mechanic found this issue - maybe because of this video. Trying to figure out the correct parts with BMW has taken SO MUCH TIME. Thank you for posting this and we're never getting another BMTroubleYou.

Sorry you are finding this out the hard way like me. But, my bmtroubleyou 😂 is over 400,000km now (250,000miles) and going strong.

I have had the same problem from blocked water drains on my Merc. Was easy to fix, but previous owner had problems, didn't know what was causing it, mechanic visits, I eventually worked it out by pouring a couple of buckets of water on the windscreen and saw that water pooled and built up and breached the engine seal. Fixed in 15 mins with a screwdriver and hose, flushed out blocked drains. Was shorting all the injectors, were basically underwater, all the connectors open circuiting. Took a torrential downpour to discover it.

The foam is noise dampening, not water collector. Thanks for the heads up.

Hi Tyler, yes the foam is for noise dampening, but when the water shield breaks it becomes a sponge that retains the moisture soaking the injector harness in water which eventually leads to the corrosion and failure of the injectors.

i did not put the foam back. there is a fair (not universal) consensus to keep it off. .. audibly, i have not noticed a difference; perhaps at full load it’s different from the exterior. .. however my once corroding fuel line 5 isn’t getting worse so the foam will stay off/out. i believe small amounts of water were being trapped by the foam. (even though i have a 2012 w/ the updated water deflection trim and it’s in pretty good shape; not yet splitting.)

Should not really damage the injector. Clear the water using wd40 and make sure water not dripping there. If it shows short cct on read out and the short is on the plug or wires should not damage injector. Water in fuel will damage injector.

SAME 2008 MODEL THEY KNOW THIS IS A PROBLEM SHOULD BE A RECALL AND FIX BUT NOT

so this part has been redesigned by BMW, knowing they have this issue with injectors. This should become a recall. I just lost #6 for this issue. How hard was it to replace the #6, any tips? Dealer quoted me $1400, which is a joke!

Hi, I agree, as do many others, that it’s a poor design and BMW knows this. #6 is the most difficult to replace because it’s so far back and it requires a special pull slide hammer to remove, as well as, more parts of the firewall to be removed. I paid $500 an injector to have them replaced and $400 labour. I found a good BMW Preformace shop to do the work.

Had mine replaced, too, when I had glow plugs replaced. On a side note: Anyone know where the MAP sensor is located? Mine has gone bad and a search hasn't turned up anything.

Sorry, I don’t remember the exact code, but the code was for failed injector. It went into limp mode. Started fine and drove a bit then back into limp mode.

Mine was 4453 DDE injector cylinder 5 activation. Same issue. But the CAR did not give me any codes. Had to use an OBD Scanner

How did you get injectors out ?

The injectors can be difficult to remove, especially #6. So I took it to my local independent BMW specialist for that part of the job.
