Another great video Dean. Sound advice about the glow plugs. I had 2x fail on my E61 535d and I only knew as it stopped the DPF regeneration. I used your video and removed and replaced all 6 glow plugs. ISTA diags knew 2 had failed - I didn’t need to replace the control module. Need to do the vacuum pipes next - a few look a bit crusty 😀

with glowplugs replaced every 10k is a joke, if you service them as per schedual and use anti seeze on them you won't have any problems, just when replacing and the threads don't look great, 1 pass with thread repair tool to clean them with some oil on it (so debriss will stay on the tool) and you are ready to go.

my vortex crankcase breather did send lots of oil to intake, so yeah, you still need to clean that at least,( and i mean cleaning of vortex separator and intake itself) so it is much better to use good "old" fabric filter to prevent that( and change it every 2 oil change which is not that hard and not expensive at all) , not to say diesel engine can use oil as a fuel, so it can start revving on its own

Another top video Dean, you are bang on with the remapping carry on with these engines because everyone up north who has a 530/535d is selling them because they have problems lol. Not me. Even still have my egr in because its electronic and haven't got to that yet, swurl flaps have been blanked, I done that asap. Keep these coming, better than most content on KZbin.

Love the intent but frankly the content is inaccurate and misleading. My X5 Diesel is sitting on almost 220,000 kms and runs strong and is ultra reliable. Obviously, a lot depends on where you are in the World. I'm in Australia but looking at the BMW KZbin experiences in the extremes of Canada the messaging is positive. Servicing is crucial as always. Best car I've ever owned.

If I heard you correctly you said to replace glow plugs every 10k? I'm assuming that's 10k miles but even so, that's a very short replacement cycle in my opinion. I've replaced the glow plugs and controller several times on two different E61 535d engines and I would certainly agree that they should be replaced on a similar schedules to spark plugs in a petrol engine. Something like 48k or 60k miles max, but not 10k unless you have an actual failure showing up in a fault code. If you don't do many miles then I'd also suggest a 4/5 year replacement if you don't get to 48k or 60k miles in that time. I totally agree that you don't want to leave it too long and then when a plug falls you can't get it out. My method for extraction is to get the engine fully hot before starting and then strip down everything to allow the inlet manifold to be removed. Then remove the electrical connections carefully and spray plenty of Plusgas or other penetrating oil around the glow plugs (not WD-40) and then go have a cup of tea and some cake. Or you could just stand around for 10-20 mins if you prefer! In any case, use a torque wrench in reverse mode and set a torque of 25NM and see if you can get any plugs out. If not, spray them again and wait 5 mins and try again at 28NM, then repeat at 30NM, 32NM and 35NM, each time spraying more Plusgas. Usually you'll get 4 or 5 out and maybe all 6 by this point. But if not then you need to decide to either leave the remaining plugs alone, especially if they are not showing as faulty, OR go to 40NM and try to get them out. I don't know what happens beyond 40NM but eventually you will snap the plug so choose wisely!

This video popped up while doing some casual research for my 2005 BMW E61. I did the following on it (as you did): 1. complete EGR and EGR cooler delete 2. swirl flaps removed 3. DPF emptied and regeneration deprogrammed 4. new style breather as you showed in your other video 5. remapped to 200BHP, increased turbo boost and different torque curve on the automatic gear box So far, a new (E39) exhaust manifold (at 350K km), new turbo and new injectors (at 518K km) as main repairs . The car has 530.000 kms on the clock and running strong. Love that thing. What I am wondering about at this point is the timing chain...And so my question to you: would that need to be replaced in the near future?
@chitown-60608

The intake pipe that you mention at 6:55; can you give any hints on how to make sure it's seated correctly? I can barely see the pipe, so I'm trying to figure out how I'm supposed to get my hand in there to force it onto the turbo. Do you push it with a tool? Come up from underneath the engine or the side or from the top to the right of the pipe itself? So frustrated. I changed the thermostat and water pump on mine and everything is completed, but I'm not 100% sure that I've got this pipe connected to the turbo as you can't even see the connection. Greatly appreciate any advice/tips!

Worth replacing if the intake is already off, as it literally cost buttons aftermarket, and prevents future breakdowns cuz of blown cooling circuit....

The E9x 325d M57 also didn't have swirl flaps. Mine had none when I removed mine (no blanks or facility to fit them was there), and neither does another friend's 325d. I believe the 325d also had the later Vortex breathers from when we both did ours.

@@piovo1 agree entirely, I have two 2001 530D Tourings with 170k miles (273k kms) and 173k (278k kms) miles. Both on original injectors and EGRs (which I removed recently and they are clean as whistles). In fact the only engine component failures have been water pump on both (coincidentaly around 163k miles on each), the turbo let go on the manual at about 80k miles not long after I bought it but that was put down to lack of maintenance as the car had spent about 12 months sitting on forecourts and the left-hand engine mount on the auto which I changed about 1,000 miles ago. I had the swirl flaps removed on the auto when I bought it but have resisted the blandishments to bypass the EGR a. because they are perfectly clean and b. the issues with getting the vehicle past the Controle Technique (French MOT). Always been fully maintained either by a dealer or more recently by myself including making sure that some of the more obscure items like replacing or cleaning the crankcase filter is done at recommended intervals.

May be a dumb question but is there a tune that can “turn off/block” egr system? I know once it has an EGR delete and flush/clear these motors run much better and don’t have as much carbon buildup as a result. My only concern with doing a delete is that we have emissions tests for diesels under 8500lbs in my state. Also, is the EGR delete undetectable or?? Just trying to wrap my head around this

Hi Dean, my e70 X5 with an N57 diesel engine has just failed it's MOT for a major oil leak at the back of the engine. The garage didn't know where from and said they were two busy to investigate! Do you have any suggestions as to where it may be coming from please, is there a common cause?

12:10 525d e39 2003 with the weird m57b25, vacuum turbo regulation - a fucking stone got stuck there so the regulation couldnt fully open up thus knocking out the turbo flaps out of their place forcing me to open up the turbo and fix them back in place, even bought a replacement turbo because it got me scared, so now i have another at disposal 😅

Have to chuckle with these videos that say that "Parts That Will Fail On A 100k+ Mile BMW M57 Engine". Why, because my two 2001 E39 530Ds have 170k and 173k miles and these parts haven't failed. On an M57 there is no given when parts will or will not fail. The M57 is pretty much bomb-proof and if properly maintained they will go on "forever" 2nd-hand BMW are often bought cheaply, driven hard by people who can't afford professional maintenance and don't have the skills, equipment or money to do the work themselves.

Im looking to buy a e90 530D with M57D30TU2. the car is in prestine condition but seller said that is have a stage 1 remap and EGR deleted. the car have gone to 285k km. Every thing else is stock like new from factory. Do I need to be worried about the stage 1 tune?
@johnsnow5239

Yes you should be worried. If you have the DPF deleted you are missing out on a stage 2 tune!! You can run a nice solid stage 2 which will bring many many smiles.

Great video, I had an e46 and e90 M47 with most of these issues also, well explained 👍 I'm looking at an X5 with either the M57 or N57, which engine would you recommend? I'm leaning towards to older M57 as I know the N57 has chain issues... would you agree? Cheers

M57. Another thing on the N57 is that the timing chain is mounted on the back which is a pain if it starts producing problems.

I’ve had all 6 glow plugs continuously show on Carly and other diagnostic tools, car starts fine each time but I get a lot of white smoke but believe this is due to no dpf, I was told it had an EGR delete… which doesn’t seem to be the case as BMW specialists replaced these + vacuum hoses 2.5 years ago. I have a 335D m57 engine (2009) any advice on this? Lately some more black smoke on accelerating, replacing the top Intercooler hose pipe as the garage I went to recently said that was slipping due to the clip being worn / bent, hence loss of power at times.

BMW Doctor I have a question about the BMW e60 530d 2004 218hp Automatic. there is a third thermostat which is on the oil cooler of the gearbox. I changed twice the main thermostat and the thermostat of AGR and the car did not heat more than 70 degrees maximum 80 in city driving. After replacing the third, the car began to warm up normally. can you give me a little more information about this third thermostat
