i wish bmx bars and stems had angle indicators on them so you can line up a notch to know what angle your bars are at. this is pretty standard for mtb, and id argue its even more important for bmx since our bars are so much taller. a little angle change goes a long way . the bar would just need a crosshair style marking , so it works for both top load and front load stems. the stems can just put a few notches , say center, and then every 5 degrees or so in both directions

At 39 I decided to get another bike. So I did some looking around and picked up the Kink Switch 2025 model. Full cromo, a bit heavy at 28lbs(way lighter than my 38lb bike in my 20's), and the angels are totally different from 2012... Lol So just getting used to it again is enough. But the bike came with Kink F900 9" 4 piece bars and Kink Bold HRD 50mm top load stem. And I actually like the way it feels. I have found myself picking up the front end slightly by accident. But overall, its feels good. Again, 3 sessions on it, so getting used to riding again after 12+ years away. (Wasn't very good to begin with) Thanks as always for doing the hard work Brant. Nice to get a grasp on what is happening in BMX. Also, your videos on the old guys are probably my favorite ones. Nice to see the mid life guys out there getting after it!

I'm glad you had this conversation with him. Those bars are way too big, but I like the look. I'd like to see a smaller size of them 8.75 high by 26in wide I think is a winner for aesthetics and stil provides a lot of leverage. Sweep should be 3up and 6back I think.

i think the 2 different tire sizes affecting bar height and rider position is an underated topic in bmx. it was common back in the day because frames didn't fit fat tires, but nowadays ppl ride the same size.... maybe freecoaster made that popular... i think it makes the most difference in my personal riding

I specifically ride skinnier rears for pivot tricks and fakie tricks cause faster rotation. But in can deffs affect headtube angle and more plus bar height and effective bb height. Pedal body thickness comes in here too. For me 11.8bb plus thin pedals feels better then 11.5 with thick pedals even tho the pedal position is very similar.

Hey man how did that Tinman hub hold up? I wanna get one but didn't know about an alloy axle. Can they handle grinds and drops? Thanks!

I never had a problem with that. Most front hubs have aluminum axles with chromoly bolts. If you can wait, the front Venus is on the way
@ANewchannel-v1wАй бұрын
Right on man thanks! No kidding? I def thought virtually all axles were chromoly. Is that just fronts or do they make rear hubs that way that aren't race or flatland specific? By the way I'm also an outlier of your survey, I ride 9.25 with FL stems and 8.25 with TLs. Considered super low by today's standards.
@Brant_MooreАй бұрын
I was surprised at how many outliers like that there are. The amount of people who ride 8.75 or 8.5 blew my mind. Rear axles are often chromoly. I think all male rear axles are chromoly unless they’re ti. Some female rear axles are aluminum (profile, etc). Most fronts are aluminum and if they’re chromoly it’s used as a selling point. Talking about the internal axle. The bolts are always chromoly unless swapped out for ti

Other things people over look for overall bar height is the effect fork crown height has on it as well as headtube length, especially now with the footlong headtubes on so many frames Lol! Also how deep or shallow your lower headset bearing sits in the headtube can make a couple mm difference, then add in bottom bracket height and crank length affecting your stance and how tall you are compared to your bars with your feet on the pedals.

Basically…almost everything affects where our bars sit. Haha

I've ridden Bars from 7.5" x 23.5" all the way to 10" x 32" I really thought the gigantic bars would be helpful after my disabilities got worse. If anything it made my riding harder & far worse! These days I have 3 sets of Bars I'm using regularly. 9" x 26" on the Flatland Bike, 9.3" on the Trails Bike & 9.5" on the Street Bike. My biggest issue? Upsweep!! I NEED a minimum of 3° Upsweep. My Bars have 4°, 3° & 5° Upsweep respectfully. Flatland Bars are a tad lower because the geo on the bike is tighter, smaller, faster, etc. Anything over 9" makes things feel squirmy & unstable. But under 9" makes my body hurt. Trails Bike, similar deal. I prefer the little bit taller so I have some extra leverage with the longer CS's. Street Bars, tallest & most Upsweep. Even with shorter Chain Stays, I ride so slowly 😄 Peg chunks, curb nibbler shit so that extra height & upsweep helps with the pull & wrists life!
