NO!! Water IS wet because everything that touches water gets wet, AN WATER IS IN CONSTANT TOUCH WITH IT SELF. Something gets wet when the particles of water (H2O) attach themselves to it. So, technically, since water particles are constantly attached to each other (because if not it wouldn't make water) water is wet. If you evaporate water it stops being wet because the particles separate and, eventually, it ends up being part of the air.

I learned this fact a little bit ago, and I agree with Midoriya, water itself is not wet, just anything it gets on! Like if you were to shower, your body would become wet because the water would stick to you. In a way, water is a completely different object, for instance, water isn't a solid unless it's frozen, and our bodies are like solid objects even though it contains multiple states of matter! I hope this helped!😅
@dvousmenace54383 жыл бұрын
Well, you see, the definition of wet, is when somthing solid, is touched, or covered, by liquid, and then is therefore wet. Therefore, the liquid itself cannot be considered wet.

Okay, you can kind of see the tactic Stephen went for here, by using what Daniel said and reversing it to make Daniel have to repeat his argument as Stephen goes forward in order to get out more information. Water is not wet. If you put water into water, it doesn't add a different substance that could get wet, therefore it isn't wet. You can add things to it to make it wet on that thing, but most liquids don't apply, unlike oil which doesn't mix with water. Other liquids that do would just be considered that liquid diluted in water which would not be wet. However, solids can be added into water and made wet. Water added into water only adds more to itself, so it would just be more water.

Me, myself, and I : ... Wait but by saying something is wet, is when it was dry before it got wet. Because if something is known to be wet all the, then it would not be called wet, it would be called the object. So to clarify that something is "wet" it would have to be dry before. If a sponge was in a skin all the time, then it would not be called , wet sponge, it would just be called , sponge, and a water bottle, same thing goes with that. And oil. oil is a luqid, it is not wet. Wet is like saying there is water on an object that is not wet, or is not supossed to be, like there could be drops or socked in the/on the object. Then you could say the object is wet because the object was not wet before. So , water can't be wet because it was never dry. Water is water. Oil is oil. Hand sanatizer is Hand sanatizer. There for i say water is not wet. 😅

Air humidity... air can be wet and dry, air itself doesn’t hold a significant enough amount of water to be felt and considered wet, so in a general sense, it it dry. Being wet doesn’t have to be in the tense that water can become more wet, it’s the water itself that is wet. Wet objects can make other objects wet, you dry your wet hair with a towel, the towel will become wet, it’s common sense. Water is not the only thing to make things wet either, especially when you think of wet as a textural term. If you put your hand in a bucket of water, it would feel wet. Water is an object, and it acts as it’s own catalyst to make things wet. Therefore, water is wet in every term.

What if it’s neither? When your body or any object touches water, the water droplets stay on top of that thing rather then soaking in, and then it just runs off the person. And it just makes you wet so it’s not really wet itself. BUT objects made of things like cloth and cotton can absorb the water making the object actually wet. When you drink water it’s just stored in your stomach then soon taken out, and you can’t feel it. It’s just making your insides wet. So water is a chemical no mortal is able to physically touch nor store within themselves, but certain objects can, their for proving that water is neither wet or “dry” as one might say.

Liquid water is not itself wet, but can make other solid materials wet. Wetness is the ability of a liquid to adhere to the surface of a solid, so when we say that something is wet, we mean that the liquid is sticking to the surface of a material. Whether an object is wet or dry depends on a balance between cohesive and adhesive forces.

Cohesive forces are attractive forces within the liquid that cause the molecules in the liquid to prefer to stick together. Cohesive forces are also responsible for surface tension. If the cohesive forces are very strong, then the liquid molecules really like to stay close together and they won't spread out on the surface of an object very much. On the contrary, adhesive forces are the attractive forces between the liquid and the surface of the material. If the adhesive forces are strong, then the liquid will try and spread out onto the surface as much as possible. So how wet a surface is depends on the balance between these two forces. If the adhesive forces (liquid-solid) are bigger than the cohesive forces (liquid-liquid), we say the material becomes wet, and the liquid tends to spread out to maximize contact with the surface. On the other hand, if the adhesive forces (liquid-solid) are smaller than the cohesive forces (liquid-liquid), we say the material is dry, and the liquid tends to bead-up into a spherical drop and tries to minimize the contact with the surface. Water actually has pretty high cohesive forces due to hydrogen bonding, and so is not as good at wetting surfaces as some liquids such as acetone or alcohols. However, water does wet certain surfaces like glass for example. Adding detergents can make water better at wetting by lowering the cohesive forces . Water resistant materials such as Gore-tex fabric is made of material that is hydrophobic (water repellent) and so the cohesive forces within the water (liquid-liquid) are much stronger than the adhesive force (liquid-solid) and water tends to bead-up on the outside of the material and you stay dry. Answer 2: To answer this question, we need to define the term "wet." If we define "wet" as the condition of a liquid sticking to a solid surface, such as water wetting our skin, then we cannot say that water is wet by itself, because it takes a liquid AND a solid to define the term "wet." If we define "wet" as a sensation that we get when a liquid comes in contact with us, then yes, water is wet to us. If we define "wet" as "made of liquid or moisture", then water is definitely wet because it is made of liquid, and in this sense, all liquids are wet because they are all made of liquids. I think that this is a case of a word being useful only in appropriate contexts.
@antirham79252 жыл бұрын
wet is an adjective that describes adding water onto something, water added to water just gives more volume to the previous amount but cannot truly add any other sort of value or variable, therefore water itself cannot be wet. as fire is just gas particles that are ecxited enough to chemically react with the fuel around it, which doesn't make fire dry. It makes other objects 'dry' by exciting water molecules to th point where they become less dense than anything around it, letting them leave.
