@Hyperpandas19 күн бұрын
@@zomgoose True, but it better measures economic output and growth, which is what recessions are principly about. Per capita gdp is better for other things like relative household wealth and wellbeing.
@ElectronicWasteland-p2x19 күн бұрын
@@Hyperpandas I thought it was self-evident. It's because without growing the population, per-capita GDP contraction = aggregate GDP contraction, and two quarters of GDP contraction is a technical recession. If it wasn’t for the massive immigration we would be in a recession lasting many years. Canada is stuck and can’t seem to kick start it’s productivity growth. Eventually a fed gov will come in and start austerity measures and then we’re truly fucted.
@Hyperpandas19 күн бұрын
The thing is, productivity can't really be "kickstarted" by any particular policy. The current low productivity is a function of 20-30 year trends, and it will take a long time of consistent effort and smart policy to get things back on track. You're right though, somebody will come along calling for austerity and will make everything worse.
@joe97nsx19 күн бұрын
@@Hyperpandas Austerity is necessary. The longer you wait the worse it'll get. The government can't keep paying $1 billion in interest payments per week and expect Canadian productivity to improve. Unfortunately, we've had a clown who thinks budgets will balance themselves running the country for the last 9 years.
@Hyperpandas18 күн бұрын
@joe97nsx Recognizing austeriry has never worked isn't an endorsement for excessive borrowing for anything and everything. Aisterity is also a sure way to erode productivity further. Also, have you ever looked up the full context of the "budget will balance itself" thing? Its basically the same thing the Conservatives ran on in the last election.... no spending cuts in favor of growing the economy.

Okay for all the comments that we are in a depression or recession - the definition is a negative GDP for a number of months, high unemployment and or negative inflation which we are non of.
@keithiverson668718 күн бұрын
The indicators are everywhere that we’re headed to a recession, the Sahm Rule has been triggered earlier this year (.5% unemployment gain in a quarter, hell, we had .3% in a month 1.7% total this year) which is another major indicator to go with massive rate cuts and yield curve uninversion. The unemployment doesn’t have to be that high, it’s the rate of job loss and length of time of unemployment that matters. The only things keeping us out of a technical recession now is mass immigration and government spending/ public job creation. Once those stop, the economy will tank hard. The government has already put a pause on immigration due to public backlash and with the latest economic update, govt spending will most likely be cut as well. Add in an election and a trade war with a country 10x more populous and dodging a recession by summer is looking slim because there is no way we can pivot on spending while our hands are tied. It takes about 3 months for a new minister to be briefed on the main points and risks before any executive policy decisions can be made with good accuracy, 6 months if it’s a new government. We’re going to be rudderless for about 9 months financially this year at a time when financial timing is everything.

In short, the USA imports most of our oil and refines it because the refineries they mostly have are geared for heavy oil such as ours, not the sweet stuff like there's or the Saudis. So if the Americans keep demanding more energy we sell it to them in the form of alberta crude. If trump follows through with a 25% tariff, that means every barrel they import now costs 25% more for them to import from us. It's supposed to make competition more expensive but they simply don't have the domestic production of the resource. Hopefully that clears it up a little bit.
