I read this comment and then thought of the many times my daughter complimented me at pulling my truck up to within an inch or two of a wall and not hitting it. I'm not that good, I just plan on staying a foot away and I'm seldom off by more than 10 inches one way or the other! But yeah, that guy is good.
@d_kortman
@d_kortman Жыл бұрын
@@rectorsquid yup. Just like you really know your truck, It’s all about knowing your aircraft. You can bank a helicopter seriously far at low level before you get dangerously close to hitting the ground. Plus, the air pushing up off of the ground back towards the rotor gives it a little cushion before hitting the ground. You’d have to be descending pretty quick or bank really quick to push through that cushion of air.

The BO-105 was certified and sold in the US starting in 1972. It has a hingeless rotor system with fiberglass reinforced plastic blades, and can sustain +3.7/-1.0 Gs. I was the West Coast sales demo pilot in the 70’s and 80’s, and it was the most enjoyable aircraft I’ve ever flown, with around 7000 hours total time in three different models. If you want to see its aerobatic capabilities, watch the Red Bull BO-105.

@@LanaaAmor They will have reinforced critical parts of the primary structure to withstand the demanding flight maneuvers. I would rule out the possibility that the engines have been modified. That would mean that a reinforced main gearbox would have to be installed. Everything would have to be re-certified, would be very costly and not really necessary. The two 250C20B turbines are powerful enough and the show is flown with minimal weight and reduced fuel in the main tank.

This wild flight from 1979 follows the "Teufelsgraben" - Devils Trench - a valley in the woods near Holzkirchen in the Bavarian alpine foothills. I guess, this was in some way inspired by the rebels attack on the death star in the first "star wars" movie from 1977.

Jup, I grew up very close to there. Fun fact, many testflights of the Eurocopter Tiger prototypes were also done in that area. Some people I know living really out in the country called the emergency hotline because they had seen a helicopter having "real trouble staying in the air" sometimes flying upside down... XD After a while they were told not to worry about that one...

The BO 105 was the first helicopter then that made such aerobatic flying with a rotorcraft possible, because of its titanium forged rigid rotor head. Charly Zimmermann is by the way 83 now and still alive. There is an (in)famous "lilac" video footage with a similar BO 105 but american registration crashing at an aerobatic display. The pilot that died in this mishap was Siegfried Herrmann, a former MBB test pilot. (That video is often falsely titled as "Charlie Zimmermann crashing")

the rotor head didn't have anything to do with it, the composite rotor blades and cutting edge airframe is what made it possible to fly like that. A lot of helicopters could do it, this was the only one that was so useless, it could only be used as an aerobatic aircraft.

Fantastic flying. Back in the 80's I attended a course for NATO helicopter crews held in the South of Germany. I flew with a German pilot as co-pilot of a Bo-105 and really fell in love with the machine, BUT I realised back then how short a life expectancy would be for a military helicopter pilot flying a recce helicopter in a European war. Hopefully, modern technology has now markedly reduced the need for recce helicopters, but brave NATO pilots will always be needed.

I have seen it posted numerous times on Bob Hoover video's as well, and that man was still doing aerobatics when he was 80+ years old. And he lived to 94. He did loops and rolls near the ground in a two engined plane with both engines out ffs. It turns out there are quite a bit of old and bold pilots.
