As someone who is agnostic, bisexual and quite critical of organized religion and also someone that grew up going to a church (it was even one that was very accepting all people) I really connected to this song. I am extremely lucky to have parents who love me regardless of who I love and I absolutely have no problem with spirituality or a belief in a higher power or powers. I feel like as a whole (there are exceptions of course) organized religion is frequently used to wrongly justify discrimination and hatred. I’m of the feeling that if you’re beliefs aren’t hurting others you are completely reasonable and decent. But using your beliefs as a weapon to hurt and discriminate towards people is absolutely horrific an unacceptable.

i totally get your point but wouldnt that make a world where "anything goes" i mean discrimination has many faces it can be blatant and stupid racism or sexism but it also can be less tough things like "discriminating" against people that want to ride a roller coaster naked. I hope you get what i mean, just because someone "discriminates" against another person doesnt make it bad. I personally am glad that we discriminate sex offenders and pedophiles from working at schools so that the vulnerable in society like children are more safe. If we talk about racism, homophobia etc, thats just dumb and shouldnt be tolerated

I think I get where you're coming from, even as someone who is generally science minded and doesn't believe in the supernatural. The problem I find with most organized religions is just that, the organization. Like they are trying to systemize something that is so intertwined and complex beyond our understanding that we use the blanket term spirituality to describe it. It's not so much a set of rules as it is a "Vibe" that you feel. A connection, an expansion of possibilities, a great sorrow, the natural world itself, it comes in many forms, but the deep interconnectedness of everything to everything else is the "Spiritual" feeling I have experienced in my life...

Yay I’m so happy to see you back! I was a bit worried. This is one of my top 10 Bo songs. I put it on the same plane as Art is Dead. I love (I’ve commented this on a bunch of other people’s reactions) that I totally took it from an atheist perspective when I first heard it, then was shocked to see people who are Christian and Muslim also react to it and see it (and agree with it) from their own viewpoint. Leave it to Bo to put words into the mouth of freaking GOD and have a bunch of people from different faith and no-faith perspectives all think it was meaningful and accurate.

I am a religious person, and I thought your insight was perfect. I actually agree. I found God myself, and it wasn’t forced on me. But I agree that some of the worst people in the world are religious. They hate themselves because they have this guilt of not measuring up, and they project it on everyone who is not perfect, just like them. It’s so sad. Life on earth could be heaven if we all just loved each other and stopped judging other’s actions. All God asks is that I try to be my best, and I am learning to be patient and loving with myself. I am such a better person because of it. Much love all, no matter what you believe. At the end of the day, we all came from the same power, whether that be God or the Big Bang

I'm agnostic, kinda leaning atheist since it's so hard to convince me of religious stuff- But that last thing you said was one of the realist things I may have ever heard, and I'm being honest. Usually I don't make a comment on this type of thing, but that's super true but for some reason I never thought about it in such perfect words. Even if I do put my faith in science more than God, it doesn't change the fact that in both settings, we came, in one way or another, from the same origin.

I really like your interpretation of “my love’s the type of thing that you have to earn and when you earn it you won’t need it” - I’ve always been unsure of what that meant. I kind of thought it was about the irony/hypocrisy (not sure what the right word to use is) of religion that you need to be a good person to earn god’s love but at the same god is supposedly an all-loving supreme being. But I think your interpretation makes more sense. Btw I’d really like to hear you react to rant and Art is Dead. I think they’re from Words Words Words so it’ll be quite a while, but they’re really good ones.

the way i've always understood is that if everyone was truly worthy of god's love, aka everyone was a good caring person with each other, you wouldn't even need god, because any problem you ever had, other people, everyone would be willing to help you through. a selfless world.

Love the line about "I sent gays to fix overpopulation, boy did that go well" because it insinuates a couple things. First, is that maybe God (if he exists) actually created gay people the way they are, in which case there's absolutely NO way it could be a sin. Secondly, the "boy did that go well" referring to how we've ostracized gay people instead of just accepting them. Good stuff

I would say that have a very similar religious belief. I semi-regularly attended a Southern Baptist church growing up, and was baptized when I was 13. As I went through Jr. High and High school, I began to see the bad side of people that seemed to come out through their following of Christianity (in my case specifically) and stopped attending church altogether. Even with that, I still volunteered every year to work for the Vacation Bible School for young kids in the Summer, because I think religion can be a very important part of people's lives, and everyone should have the opportunity to experience those thoughts/ideals and make their own decisions about whether or not they want to follow them as they grow up. Many people want or need that guidance and have very pure intentions with how they want to portray and follow those beliefs, while there may be some bad apples in the bunch. Love the reactions, Chris. Glad you're back!

In Catholicism, that once a week class is called Catechism. The length of time apparently varies as I think my siblings had Confirmation in like 8th grade, but I think I was a Junior when we finally got to Confirmation. (There's 7 years between my next sibling and I, so maybe it just got longer as time went on or something, I don't know.) And though I had planned to stop going to church afterwards since my mom had agreed she wouldn't make me after Confirmation, I found the organist at the church we started going to quite cute, so I kept going for a while afterwards. (Actually took her to my senior prom.)

Bo Burnham's mother is a Christian and a nurse (special caregiver for dying patients), and I imagine they must have had thousands of conversations about finitude and spirituality. Bo said in a podcast once that he likes going to church especially because of the silence. And what I love about the From God's Perspective lyrics, is that it doesn't close this discussion. It opens it up to many others.

You should watch ‘Bo Burnhams best jokes from the Green Room’. There’s a good 10 min compilation on KZbin. He’s only 20 in it, and really holds his own around a bunch of older comics. And then he plays Art is Dead in front of all of them in same segment. He seems out of his element, especially when the comics point out how unique and good he is, but he’s very very Bo the whole time. Even if you don’t react to it, it’s a really good look at younger Bo.

God wants us to treat each other with love and care and kindness etc. He wants world unity and hate to end. indifference to end. This world isn't based in love. It's based in greed. "Maybe God does not believe in you" is the implication that God doesn't believe in religion. That doesn't mean that you're bad for choosing a religion. It just means that it didn't increase your chances of being the right kind of person in his eyes.

As a Christian i understand the critiscism but id like to counter that no christian is a great perfect person. If we were why would we even need the religeon. But i like to think god would love you regardless of who you love. If im a parent and my kid is gay or trans or whatever or asexual or aromantic. If theyre happy that will make me happy. And theres a duality bro cause i know plenty of mean, rude, unloving Christians and plenty of good athiests and hatefull mean athiests, but i do believe that athiests still need someone or something to believe in, whether its themselves, or goals or dreams or just something, cause thats what lifes all about man.

I'm very religious and deeply involved with organized religion, and it's one of the most beautiful parts of my life and an enormous source of comfort and spiritual wellness. As a catholic I strongly say that if any Christian says you need to fear God then they're doing it wrong. If God is love and wants us to love each other then how come so many Christians are so aggressive or focus on punishment. I've never understood it. I cant understand how to me jesus taught about helping those struggling, not judging other, exploitation and greed are bad, and to love every person regardless of where they come from because all are children of God. I dont understand this aggressive focus on sin, or conversion or hate. Evangelicals especially confuse and frustrate me by how they treat and talk to others. Then again I'm not american so maybe I just dont know enough about them. I love this song by Bo Burnham. I actually cried the first I watched. I felt it in my soul. Gods love isnt ours to claim or judge others for not deserving it. It's up to us to spread gods love through spreading our own love to everybody and ourselves. What's more godly then that?

If you ever want something to listen to while you're just chilling on the computer, I suggest giving it a listen. It's 2hrs and 40mins, but Bill Nye holds his own. It boils down to Ken could only say what the Bible had told him, but Bill Nye could use Science and actually predict things. Can't believe I missed this one, like Bo, Your thoughts parallel mine to a significant degree... 4:00 As someone who also grew up Lutheran, I think the name of the church thing you went to is Catechism from your description... 7:05 Yeah, everyone needs something to live for. Ideally, that thing is yourself and your own ideals that you have developed over your lifetime and not some prescribed path...especially when, as many religions say, your salvation or damnation for all of eternity is based on following their rule book...that's worse than a threat, that's an ETERNAL threat, and personally I've never been one for coercion...and hell is about as blatant as you can get...torture for all eternity or paradise? Who wouldn't pay almost any price for the latter rather than the former? Thus religion is a useful tool of authoritarians and tyrants to demand subservience...

I think people do both evil and good in the name of religion, but for the most part if they didn't have religion, they'd still do just as much evil and just as much good.

Wednesday night church thing? Out of curiosity, could it have maybe been AWANA, where you have to play games and memorize Bible verses? Because I remember doing something like that when I was young too!
