FINALLY !! Someone who plays the 16th notes in the pedal theme of the Op. 25 Toccata at their correct value ! These are 16th notes people ! NOT 8th notes ! They are written as the composer meant them to move -- at a very fast clip, extremely fast in fact but still discernable passing tones between the C's, Eb's, and Gb's which form, harmonically as the ear senses it, a diminished 7th triad on C. This, all by itself, is a very refreshing and instructive recording of which all who play the organ should take note. Thank you very much Sir for the very fine performances on this album !

I'm so pleased someone has uploaded Boëlmann's other organ works. There's a lot of that irreverent lyrical Gigout style in them that I hadn't previously appreciated. Many thanks.
@jakeallinson3 жыл бұрын
According to Wiki, Gigout adopted the younger Boëlmann, which explains a lot 😂

What a delight to hear music by Boellmann that isn't the Suite Gothique, a work I've never much cared for. I sometimes wonder if Boellmann has suffered relative neglect because so much of his music is composed "pour orgue ou harmonium" perhaps leading some players to consider it isn't "real" organ music. Whatever the reason, this is a wonderful selection and big thanks to Brilliant Classics for making it available.

Indeed - very profound compositions. I haven`t heard anything quite like this. Another composer I have recently become aware of, (I`m a violinist), is Vierne. Again, some very unusual and soul stirring music. I really love both of these composers - and I`m sure there are many more for me to discover. I am always mindful, staggered, as well, by the amount of engineering combined with musical knowledge and work in building these beautiful giants of music reproduction through the keyboard/s. One could go on forever --- but I think Bev ought to stop here. Sorry for the length of my verbal output.

@@darkgreenambulance There are many wonderful French organist/composers to explore. Here's a few to start you off - César Franck (OK he was Belgian but he worked in France), Théodore Dubois, Alexandre Guilmant and Charles-Marie Widor. Camille Saint-Saens was a fine organist and composed some excellent music for the instrument. In more recent years we have Jehan Alain, Olivier Messiaen, Marcel Dupré, Jean Langlais and Maurice Duruflé. Duruflé's "Prelude and Fugue on the name Alain" is one of the greatest pieces of organ music not composed by Bach. In choral music Duruflé's Requiem is gorgeous beyond words and at least as fine as the better known work by Fauré.

@@davebarclay4429 Many thanks, Dave for your reply. Sorry for the delay in acknowledging it - probably my listening to a lot of 1920/30s dance bands!! I do indeed enjoy Cesar Franck`s organ music, notably the Prelude and Fugue in E flat, as an example. Perhaps you could comment on three pieces by Vierne, when you have a few minutes to listen/refresh your memory. They are all from his organ symphonies. Symph. 1 :Allegro Vivace. Symph. 5: Scherzo. Symph. 6: Scherzo again. All magical movements - the Allegro Vivace particularly profound to my mind. All the best - and thanks. Bev.
