A famous musical encounter brought to life with pieces by the elderly Buxtehude and the young Bach.
In October 1705, the 20-year-old Johann Sebastian Bach, organist of the Bonifatiuskirche in Arnstadt, asked his superiors for a four-week-leave to go and listen to Buxtehude: a 400-km-journey on foot to Lübeck, where he attended the Abendmusiken at the Marienkirche. Four weeks became four months, and on his return, Bach was clapped in irons for several days for insubordination. After that, however, the superiors of the Bonifatiuskirche noticed that: ‘After this long journey, he could play astonishing chorale variations and would combine them with unknown harmonies to an extent that confused the faithful.’
Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach, Dietrich Buxtehude

Bach never left a record of whether he and the greatest organist of his day even met; perhaps the young man preferred to listen to Buxtehude in secret, silently, while the old man practised in the Marienkirche. Buxtehude’s music presents a unique blend of the North German organ school with influences from abroad such as the English virginalists and the Italian masters of more free-form genres such as the canzona and toccata. Such a unique, cosmopolitan voice evidently made a profound effect on the young Bach, whose horizons had hitherto been comparatively limited to the musicians and traditions of Saxony where he had grown up.
Manuel Tomadin’s unique new recital imagines and stages this musical encounter and its ramifications. Some of Buxtehude’s grandest and boldest organ music is featured, including the D minor Passacaglia and the C major Prelude, Fugue and Chaconne, as well as a virtuosic set of chorale variations on Gelobet seist Du, Jesu Christ. As if in answer, Tomadin plays the brilliant early G major Fantasia with its toccata-like opening, a richly chromatic central Adagio and concluding fugue with a particularly demanding pedal part.

I discovered Buxtehude works in my twenties. Now I am 68 but love this music forever (and I love Bach, of course) Thanks a lot. I know that J. S. Bach walked 500 km to meet Dietrich Buxtehude..

Dropping accidentally in, and being profoundly delighted,.These two guys were exceptional by any standard. Gardiner has focused on the rebellious Bach, yet Bach the Musician is more interesting. Bach makes me understand Buxtehude a little better. Thanks a lot!

Buxtehude's compositions capture the cosmopolitan grandeur and magisterial aspects of the Northern German traditions; whereas Bach's compositions are enriched by his improvisational nature and pure genius, changing the horizon forever. Manuel Tomadin performs these selections deftly and just so articulately. His performance is one of the best I've ever listened to; and I will keep returning to it in the future, because it gives me great solace and an overwhelming sense of awe. Thank you Brilliant Classics for one of the best posts ever here.

I have read that Buxtehude, being older and Cantor in Lübeck, was impressed by the improvisation capabilities of Bach, who in turn was very impressed by Dietrich. The tale goes that Buxtehude wanted the younger Johann Sebastian to stay in Lübeck as Kappellmeister. The tale goes that Buxtehude wanted Bach to marry his daughter so as to secure the nomination of Bach. Whatever the reason, Bach was not that interested and went away. This tale is in wikipedia and partly confirmed in the book "Bach" by John Eliot Gardiner. Upon his return to Saxony, Bach was detained for some time for administrative reasons.

That tells me that Buxtehude was more impressed in Bach than Bach for Buxtehude. Lol Bach probably found out that this man is a desperate older man who is so intrigued by his music and yet he looked up to him after all this time in the end to find out that he was so much greater than Buxtehude can ever be. Buxtehude basically made himself look petty, this is why I assume Bach lost interest & possibly even respect for him especially after going so far to have tried to make him marry his own daughter. Yeah, to Bach this is not only rude but very distasteful. I’m sorry Buxtehude, Bach isn’t nobody’s pet lol.😂

The mark of a musician who truly understands the soul of the organ is one who understands how to work with the resonance of his space... too many organists continue to play at a rhythm without respect for the resonance of a room. The following echo and silence are part of the performance as a brilliant fanfare. Without silence, the fanfare just becomes noise

Agree about Lübeck and try Georg Böhm's organ music as well. He and Bach definitely knew each other and at one point Bach appointed Böhm as his agent to sell some of his music. It is just possible (although far from clear) that Böhm, who was quite a bit older, could have been Bach's teacher. Another composer who should appeal to anyone who likes Buxtehude is Bach's cousin Johann Gottfried Walther.
