If you want a large snake, a boa constrictor is possibly the best you can get. They don't get big enough to be truly dangerous (like Burmese pythons and retics do). They're not super active, and don't require a whole lot of extra space or cage cleaning compared to other snakes of similar size (such as indigo snakes and cribos). I had one for over 34 years before she passed away at the age of almost 35 (final length 8 ft. 4.5 in.). She was in the same 2 ft. x 2 ft. x 4 ft. enclosure for pretty much the whole time. She had one hide that was actually a piece of driftwood. She would usually sleep underneath it and climb on top when she felt like exploring. I used ground corn cob as a substrate, but I hear that many other substrates work, from newspaper to various sorts of bark. For heat I used an overhead lamp attached to a fixture at one end of the enclosure, and she had a large water dish underneath the lamp to generate humidity and for soaking. I would alternate between a 120 W and a 150 W bulb depending, to keep her temperature in the upper eighties to low nineties during her day cycle. During her night the temperature would go down into the seventies. Because of the location of the lamp there was a temperature gradient as well. She didn't have any problems with digestion until the last year or two of her life. Apart from the hide and water bowl, the only other object in the enclosure was a large rock that she could rub against to help her shed. The main problem I had with the enclosure is that the bottom was made of something like particle board, and after a couple of decades of being soiled and cleaned repeatedly it started to get rough and crumbly. I wish I had installed a false bottom made of plastic or some other easy-to-clean material early on. In any case, she was a very calm, gentle animal, and I grieved deeply for a couple of weeks after she passed earlier this year. It's hard to imagine a better pet than a boa constrictor.

Great intro to boas, and gorgeous boy you have there! The only correction I have is that snakes can utilize whatever heat you give them. It doesn’t need to be belly heat, as long as they’re getting something beyond ambient heat. I personally like ambient heaters like heat panels, because it provides both ambient heat and belly heat, but isn’t usable in all set ups. Most belly heat only set ups will require a room kept at minimum ambient temperatures, so ambient heaters are nice for me personally here because I can allow the room to get a bit colder with panels vs heat tape and still keep everyone nice and warm. Feeding is a hotly debated topic, and although I definitely gravitate more towards the conservative end, feeding isn’t a science. Stay aware of your snake, and adjust as needed, and all will be well. I feed a variety of prey items at a variety of sizes, and at a variety of frequencies. I also feed seasonally, as I see the need. It’s good as a beginner to use a schedule to get the hang of things, but with time you gain a knowledge of what is or isn’t healthy for your animals, and sticking strictly to a schedule can be detrimental to your keeping sometimes in that it can make you worry you’re feeding too much if they get fat or too little if they seem skinny. I have raised and are currently raising several different boas, and a middle ground is what I’ve settled on after accidentally power feeding my first boa and attempting to stick strictly to a conservative schedule. The conservative schedule definitely won out, but I’m less inclined to stick to the schedule and never deviate. In fact, I feel like deviation from the schedule is important, no matter how you feed!

GoldintoBlack02 sorry for the late comment; I am looking into getting a boa. Do you think that having a heat mat set to 90 F and also having a heat lamp or CHE on one side of the enclosure over the hot side would be good?? I find that a heat mat just isn’t enough to create ambient temps.

It's hard to say which snake species are my favorite for they're all awesome but if I had to choose. I'm pretty sure it's safe to say I'd choose Boas. They're the perfect middle ground. They have small, mid & larger size breeds. As for the larger breeds, they aren't so big that you can't handle alone but yet are big enough to give that wow factor. They also have more than enough morphs. I personally love that they have a more squared structure to them (head & body). Great video as always. Keep it coming & thank you! 😊✌️

Hello, so I have a question. I'm currently in the drawing out process for my future Boa. And for the enclosure design I want to do, I will be adding PVC pipes as an enrichment option for them. However seeing the cage I'm getting is going to be a somewhat big size cage, one that they will grow into as they age. I was wondering if you know what would be a good recommended PVC pipe size for a boa , that will be growing up with it. ( Obviously i'll be upgrading the cage size eventually. But for now I'm going with a 4x2x2 for them to grow up in. )

@a.joze91955 жыл бұрын

@jasono3125 жыл бұрын
Late reply here but you need a bigger enclosure. They need more length than height so that can stretch out the length of their body, but still a decent amount of height. You can use a ceramic heat emitter for ambient temperatures but also keep an under tank heater on the hot side. Regulate both with a thermostat. Cool side should be around 75-80 degrees, warm side should be 85 ambient with 90 basking area. Place a large water dish (wide) on the hot side so the water will evaporate for humidity, but don't cover the entire hot side with it. They need enough space to bask still. They need at least one hide (as they get larger it gets harder to fit multiple hides) which I have on my cool side. Reptile Basics offers cheap options for black plastic hide boxes. You can also cut holes in plastic storage tubs or something if you want a DIY approach. Avoid wood hides. Get a hygrometer and measure the humidity. If it's too low use a cypress mulch or Aspen substrate to help raise humidity. If it's naturally humid with just the water dish (50-60%) you can use newspaper. The less ventilation, the more humid the enclosure. I have a PVC cage now for my adult but when I had a glass one with a screen I covered half the screen to keep heat and humidity in. Don't let the cats play with it obviously. Keep it in a room where the cats won't be pawing at the glass stressing it out

Only one note on the enclosure size. For adult 7 ft boa can't use 4ft enclosure. I think they need lots of freedom outside enclosure and if is 7plus ft need at least 8ft enclosure oh I'm not good with ft. I use meter so for 2 meter plus snake 2.5-3 M enclosure of 2.5 that is, deeper is the, real minimum u want snake to be able to streach. This is my first video I watch from you. Jimmy Tortola I would never! As long as you’re willing to provide the amount of space for a big snake like a boa constrictor, then they can work as beginners. They are great eaters, and for the most part very docile. The babies can be feisty, but they calm down with handling.

@MyPeopleNeedMe5 жыл бұрын
How often should u handle them? Is once a week ok?
@god9855 жыл бұрын
MyPeopleNeedMe you usually handle calm snakes like boas twice a week for 10-15 minutes to make them used to being touched. Once they are used to humans touching them (usually shows by it not focusing on you anymore when you handle it and move your head around f.e.) you can handle it as often as you want as long as you’re not stressing it out. Also when it’s eaten give it 2-3 days to digest, because otherwise it could regurgitate it’s food and you really don’t want that to happen. It’s really bad for the snake and disgusting to clean up. If the snake has eaten a very big meal leave it alone for even longer just to make sure. Most snakes can go a long time without food, because of their slow metabolism, but it also takes them a very long time to digest it.
@lordlard8364 жыл бұрын
Once a month doesn't sound like a very good diet for a snake. Yes, they do have very slow metabolisms, but that's the amount of time ball pythons go without eating for when they're off feed. BCIs have higher metabolisms and don't go off feed the way balls tend to, so regardless how big the meal may be, you should probably feed every ten days. Most will tell you that their meal should be as wide as the widest part of their body.

Boa constrictor constrictor (bcc) vs boa constrictor imperator (bci)
@metaknight115 Жыл бұрын
Let’s review. The thing with BCIs was they they’re extremely docile and great for handling, and almost perfect in most categories, but they weren’t particularly pretty snakes, tan coloring with an orangish brown tail. BCCs on the other hand, they’re quite the lookers, an almost whiteish grey coloring with a maroon red tail. I really want a boa, and my heart is set on a BCC true red tail. Contrary to popular belief, BCIs and BCCs get the same size, 6-ish feet for the males, and 8-ish feet for the females. No, 12 foot long BCCs are not a common sight. BCCs are a lot rarer, and more expensive, your best shot at buying them is on morphmarket or from a Breeder. BCIs are a common sight in pet stores. Finally, the only real difference in care is feeding. BCIs, while commonly recommended as an intermediate snake, can make great beginners, they’re very easy to care for and very docile. BCCs are definitely a snake you need experience with due to their sensitive digestion system. You just can not overfeed them, whatsoever, and you need to get their care as close to perfect as humanly possible during that 1-3 day digestion. The KZbin channel “Brian’s Boas” is an amazing source for more information, especially on BCC true red tails.

Very informative but I really wish you would have shown a little more of yr snake doin it's thing in it enclosure. More of what you were talking about, while you were talking about it, instead of just at the end. Thanks either way for the video thou.😊

4-6 feet for an adult male? That's ball python length. If you have an adult boa that's only 4 feet something is wrong...unless it's a dwarf
