You definitely should try out the Feast For Crows expansion. It reduces player count to 4, introduces Arryn as a playable house, and adds a new win condition that helps shorten most games down by a lot.

What me and my friends have started doing is draw secret roles with the Baratheons as the king and with every other house being either a rebel or loyalist. It makes the game significantly more diplomatic like I think it should be. We say loyalists win if kings landing isn’t taken by a rebel and the opposite for rebels, with the winning side being placed 1st to 3rd based on their castle count. We mainly did it since the added diplomacy stops the dominant strategies for certain houses that were forming (*ahem, Greyjoys*). It also helps with the late game like you were saying as at that point (unless someone is really manipulating everyone) everyone knows the roles of everyone else and it becomes like a war council to try and take/protect kings landing with how the board has been formed. Which can become really exciting as everything unfolds in the last attempt to take it simultaneously with people desperately trying to take last minute castles so they can place above their allies.

other good sources for board game reviews are Shut Up & Sit Down or The Dice Tower. SU&SD do comedy in their reviews so it's very easy to watch as well. r/boardgames is good as well.

I absolutely adore this game. Well at least when I’m winning. If you don’t dominate in the beginning, things feel like a slog fest later on but it’s a good game. And they should really boost Greyjoy and nerf stark in 3rd ed if they release one

My friends and I usually play without a time limit and win condition.. we just roleplay and try to dominate all of westeros through alliances and forcing other players to become vassals.. record is 42 hours. Love it!

Have you played Diplomacy? It seems to be what this is based on-none of the thematic elements, but also no randomness so the game is ALL the negotiating and back stabbery (plus, because there’s no randomness it’s easy to see who’s going to win and call it before it gets boring).

AS OF FEBRUARY 18th 2020 in the USA, PARTS SERVICE FOR ALL ASMODEE NORTH AMERICA (ANA) GAMES MUST BE DONE AT THE POINT OF PURCHASE - ANA WILL NO LONGER HANDLE ANY DAMAGED/MISSING PARTS REQUESTS FOR THEIR GAMES. I don't know when you filmed your review, but does this change in policy effect your review on whether their games are worthy of purchase? Would you give them as gifts knowing you need to provide proof or purchase at the original purchase location? Would you buy on the "used" market a New In Shrink game from the company? Would you buy at a discount from a convention NIS copies of the game that have no store to handle parts requests? Does it influence the value of their games in your eyes at all? How does it make you feel about their Legacy games, where you can't check if all the components are present and complete before starting play? (I'd love to see you make a video on the policy change and what you think about it.) Anecdotally, I should note that the games seem to be going down in quality. I only recently discovered when I finally chose on to play my Pandemic 10th Anniversary edition game on a special occasion that the $100 COLLECTORS EDITION HAD A MISPRINTED BOARD! Their solution? No board reprint, we will give you a sticker. I was going through and checking all my other games more carefully and discovered a missing card in Choose Your Own Adventure: House of Danger and malformed dice in Pandemic: The Cure (a birthday gift with no gift receipt). I was still checking other games to make a series of requests when the policy change happened. I now have a damaged game, an incomplete game, and a defective collector's edition with no support with the company. I was going to use my tax refund to get 2 Mansions of Madness Expansions, 1 Arkham Horror expansion, 2 Agricola Revised expansions, and the Family edition of Agricola. I was also interested in Fallout now that it has a cooperative game expansion coming out, and wanted to get Welcome to Newdale. All of these in the USA are under ANA brands, and thus have no manufacture parts support. They don't believe in the quality of their games and aren't willing to stand behind them - so that is 9 products I won't be buying from them now. I am considering selling out all ANA era games from my collection to purge them and reduce the impulse to buy their products anymore. To me this is a _big_ change that puts an undue burden on FLGS for support, game stores that they screwed over by making bigger releases Target exclusives. So my opinion is pretty clear of the company - I'm curious if you have an leanings one way or another. (I know you aren't mainly a board gaming channel, but you are by default one of the bigger board gaming channels due to your subscriber base.)

What my playgroup does is giving some IRL advantage depending on the results(like if we order pizza, how much each one pays depends on the ranking at the end), so that second and last place aren't the same. That way the diplomacy and backstabbing can keep happening until the end, since not everyone is necessarily against each other. Whoever's in the lead can convince third place to settle for second instead of trying to pull a win, and stuff like that. And that makes some endgame backstabbing actually surprising, instead of everyone obviously trying everything they can to reach the seven castles by the end. Also stakes are fun.

This board game is honestly pretty bad (not as bad as the last season though). Dune offers the superior backstabbing experience, so get that instead.

Yeah if you want a heavy game like this, Dune is even better. If you want a much lighter version, there's the brand new A War of Whispers which is basically just an unlicensed Game of Thrones board game that plays in an hour.
