It still blows my mind that you guys are so close together to a place I visit each year, Rob is like 20 miles away. Regarding Chaos in the Old World and games that might be on lists like this for this reason - Tabletop Simulator is your friend. That's generally the only way I can play grail games, it's not ideal but it's something. I'm kind of at the mercy of whoever I'm with in terms of games that I'll play. My list isn't going to be absolute, which makes it a slightly different list to yours. 5: Diplomacy. Nothing against Diplomacy, it's in my top 100 games of all time. But there are very few people that try to get it to the table, so if I were going to spend literally an entire day playing a game, it's more likely to be TI4 or something like that, especially as TI4 is shorter than Diplomacy and easier to get to the table. 4: Catch all for Clue(do) and games like it that I played when I was a kid. There are modern versions that are much better whilst retaining the core identity of those games. 3: Catan. This is my entry for games that I've played a ton of times and don't need to play anymore. I played them to death when my board game library was small. 2: The Crew space version because it has been replaced by the Deep Sea version. This entry is for games that were killed by version 1.5s released. Dune Imperium is destined for this fate, there are several Zombicide interations that killed older iterations, Too Many Bones probably just had this happen to it, original Pandemic had this happen to it. 1: Gloomhaven. I'm also going to lump a bunch of other campaign and especially legacy games into this entry. This was around 5th on my top 100 of all time when I last did a ranking, which was within the last few months. So it's not that I don't think the game is good. My issue is that I'm basically done with it. I've put more hours into that game than I have many of my other games. But I realized recently that I'm not going to play it ever again. I'm not going to relearn the rules and sit down for a huge campaign when I have so many other campaigns to play. I have about $2,000 worth of unopened campaign games staring at me that I'm dying to play. I even have plenty of opened campaign games that I'm in the middle of campaigns of.

Dude! Thank you so much for the comment as usual! Always great to see you on the channel comments. Yeah it's a proper little board game mafia we have down here. We're building a team to take over the world! Agreed that TTS and similar can help play grail games but it's the analogue experience that's the thing for us right? That's why we love board games! Nothing quite like getting around the table. Great picks by the way - Diplomacy 100% could have been on my list as well man, no way I'm getting to play that again, and frankly I don't feel the want to ever do so either. For the games I grew up with, I also could have chosen any number of those, but felt it was a bit too easy, add clue, scrabble, monopoly, frustration, all that jazz. Catan I'd still play, so can't pop that on the list. AND YES YES YES Someone agrees with me with Gloomhaven! Well, not quite as you're reasoning differs a bit to mine, but it 100% makes sense. And BGC, you may be worse than Matt for campaign games that are sitting on the shelf... that's quite a lot lol.
@robtrounce354311 күн бұрын
That's the thing with the topic - so many of the games you can love but just will never play again for various reasons! Hearing the whys on this topic is as fascinating to me as the games themselves. So many great games that are impossible to table for one reason or another. Great shout about Tabletop Simulator, I hadn't even considered that!
@boardstupiduk11 күн бұрын
@@robtrounce3543 also there are tons of games that just through the passage of time I know that I'm unlikely to ever see again, it's a shame, but it's the nature of the beast especially with SO MANY games coming out, and often being limited print runs.

We got 5-6 sessions of Seafall before we abandoned it. The prologue mission (1st game) was the best part. 😂 The balance was awful, with no catch-up mechanic, so the two of us in the back, STAYED in the back. It was our first legacy game, and almost our last.

I agree about CaH, I sold mine at UKGE this year. Maybe I've just grown out of it. I'd put Scrabble or most other word games on the list. I'd like to play Pandemic Legacy again but I'm nervous about how I would not influence the decisions that will have long term story impact if I know what's coming. The game in a similar category I wouldn't touch again is Time Stories, really bounced off the first one. Dixit would definitely be on my list along with other similar games (Detective Club etc.)
@boardstupiduk7 күн бұрын
Love your picks! Couple of spicy ones on there as well and I'm here for it! Pandemic Legacy is a great experience, but yeah it can't be done twice, I only did it for Matt and our respective partners to play through it. It's also a hell of a lot of Pandemic to play, and I've played a TON of Pandemic. Time Stories is one I also agree with! It was innovative for it's time, but then quickly fell off a cliff. What is about the Dixit esque games that puts you off?

My top5 would be: 5: Arkham Horror 3rd ed (too restrictive, too receptive, also not a fan of the legacy-like scenarios) 4: Terra Mystica (just too dull and really dislike perfect knowledge in longer games) 3: Mansions of Madness 1st ed (because 2nd ed is so much better in every possible metric) 2: Cards Against Humanity (just edgy for the sake of being edgy, also takes waaaaay too long) 1: Portal - the Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game (just all bad, it is basically if Uve Boll made a board game) I own the original Chaos in the Old World with have the Horned Rat expansion which I'm never ever gonna give up! ;)
@boardstupiduk10 күн бұрын
Hey tuntemon! Thanks for your comment, I absolutely LOVE your top 5! Arkham Horror for me was supplanted immediately by Eldritch Horror and the LCG. Terra Mystica is a spicy pick but I 100% support it! It's a crunchy dry euro for sure. Mansions of Madness was improved significantly by the 2nd edition so that's a fantastic choice. Cards against Humanity is just trash. I have never had the dubious honor of playing Portal, which I can apparently be glad for! Don't let Rob know you have Chaos in the Old World AND The Horned Rat... he may well hunt you down lol. That's amazing though, definitely keep hold of them!

@@boardstupiduk Did I chicken out? Fair cop! OK here are two, first , the spicy one is Tapestry, I keep wanting to play the game like it’s a CIV, it’s not it’s a card engine builder with a polyomino city map that makes no real sense. Hate it! I will never play Feast For Odin… (notice not play rather than again). As mentioned I hate being forced to do a polyomino puzzle to achieve something when the theme is completely disconnected to that puzzle. It’s not that I dislike the puzzle, Paris Cite De La Lumieres is incredible.
@boardstupiduk8 күн бұрын
THAT'S MORE LIKE IT! Tapestry is a great pick, I feel kind of similar to you about it although I don't completely dislike the game, but the theme is massively disconnected from the experience. I've still never played Feast for Odin, I feel like I should try and find time to try it at some point, although I've not really enjoyed other Rosenberg's except Patchwork.
@stevekingswell91436 күн бұрын
@@boardstupiduk Yeah, I would play it if offered to see what the pro's of the game are as its hugely liked, but it doesn't inspire me given the polyomino element. As an idea for a video - it would be great to compare 'sandbox' games in some way. Xia, Feast For Odin, Agricola, Mage Knight, Sleeping Gods etc hmmm... it would be quite an undertaking as they are almost by nature large games but it would be interesting to consider the scope, balance, player interaction, and game play qualities.

Would love to have a conversation with you about Seafall. Played it through to the end and our group a really enjoyable time. HOWEVER...a lot of this was us enjoying the ideas and what the boxes contained but the game fell quite flat for long periods and quite often a whole scenario for me would be sailing to an island and rolling dice hoping for something to happen. A brave game to make and important for the hobby with its ideas (particularly the fluro light if you got that far) but the game could feel like you were dragging an anchor around.
@boardstupiduk10 күн бұрын
Hey man! Definitely keen to chat about it! My experience was mostly trying find where the fun was, remember I was coming to this game having already played numerous legacy and modular campaign style games - so perhaps it felt more dated than it should, but I also remember it being polarising when it released. I thought the writing and decisions were uninspired and arbitrary for the most part and it was an absolutely GLACIAL pace. But if you guys enjoyed it that's a beautiful thing! Not everything is for everybody, and that's a facet of how we all enjoy different aspects of board gaming.
@OnyersixForLife18 сағат бұрын
For me, I agree with Fluxx, and Pandemic Legacy for the reasons you mentioned. My other 3 would be Codenames (which seemed to turn into a "whoever shouts the loudest overrules everyone else on selections" situation), Dead of Winter (often leads to an alpha gamer situation, or people dying because they are searching without support), and Exploding Kittens (which isn't a game so much as an exercise in finding the "I don't lose" cards).
@boardstupiduk15 сағат бұрын
Love your choices! Codenames is a spicy pick! For me, it's a great game but as with many games of this nature, it's group dependant, and sometimes some people can skew the feel of it. Ima disagree on Dead of Winter but I can 100% see your point, and is a similar scenario in terms of being group dependent. Exploding Kittens is not a good game, but I don't feel so strongly about it that I'd never play it again, I mean, I'm unlikely to, but you never know! Thanks for checking out the video!

Yeah, Seafall was a flop. Some games that don't play well, you can occasionally put it down to the group you played it with, but we played Seafall with a killer group and it was undoubtedly the fault of the game.
