Thanks Scott, really helpful video. Got Cosmic Encounter yesterday and about to play for the first time tomorrow so wanted a little extra tuition on how to play. You did a great job on clarifying some areas I wasn't sure about when I read the rules. Your experience of the game and obvious enthusiasm for it make this video extremely helpful for new players. I will certainly recommend it to others. Thanks again.

I think the score marker is pretty neat idea in my gaming group. Often times, it saves time counting the colony when the special "the most colony" destiny card came out. Also, it warns us who is about to win. Well, even though we can count 1-5, often times, we are busy talking, yelling, and forgot how many colony each player have (especially in 6 players game). Other than that, Good Job with the review. We "discover" the fun of the game because of you :D.

Thanks for posting this. I last played CE about 25 years ago. Just got the FFG edition for Xmas and this was a great refresher. Wonderful example there at the end!

Thanks for the review, Scott. You didn't mention the 1986 Games Workshop edition. That's the one I've got and I love it - the artwork's brilliant and think they kept all the Eon rules.

you can actually put 2 ships on your technology per turn assuming that your first encounter is successful. you can add another before your second encounter.

After your Puerto Rico review I knew I could watch your reviews to get a good sense of how to play a game and if I would like it. This is an even better review (which is saying a lot because that was very good). You won me over on this one. I was initially turned off because of the components. FF usually includes so much and the box offers little info. What you did for me Scott is open my mind to what a game can be regardless of components and this will give me better gaming experiences, thx!

@FlippyDosk Based on my reading of the rules, yes, any offensive allies would get a colony. So the motivation would be to only do so if attacking the foreign colony of a player in the lead. Yes, a planet can have any number of ships.

Fantasy Flight recently released an expansion for Cosmic Encounter. It enhances the game significantly. Tom Vasel (The Dicetower Review) has done a nice report of it here on KZbin.

Very informative review here, lots of great examples and comprehensive explanations. :) There's just one thing that I haven't quite understood... Say, we have a 4 player game and the attacker wants to invite everyone that he possibly can. Does he invite all the players before the defender, or does he invite one and then the defender gets to ask one of them? Does the potential ally have to respond immediately, or do they wait to see if both sides will invite them to ally?

Very comprehensive review, you covered all the basics and every card that most game reviewers don't do and you illustrated with a action packed example. Still have some questions left unanswered, (e.g. when you return ships to your home colonies from the warp or the hyperspace gate, can you assign any ship to any planet) But I guess I'll find that out by reading the 14 page instruction manual. Thanks for the great video!

it told us in the vid but i think you skipped it. The blue player may atack the other colored space ships that are in a planet along with him(your home sistem or ships you have on the atacked planets along with others) or you just take another card from the deck. Sorry if i have any english mistakes and tell me if i was helpfull

Are you allowed to take ships from your colonies?

I really want to buy this soon, but one question. If blue player picks a blue card from the destiny deck, what would happen? Would he have to attack his own planets? I haven't downloaded the rules from FFG so I guess this is answered?

I'm currently playing this game w friends and more often than not we end up immerse in heated debates about some of the rules. I find sometimes that sometimes the rules and powers are not enough selfexplanatory.

I've seen how much Tom Vassal loved this game, but didn't look like something I wanted. Watched your review and now I'm totally going to buy this game. Don't get me wrong, I love Vassal's reviews, but this one gave me enough examples and rules that I understand it...and want it! (By the way, your BSG reality show was awesome)

I have been looking everywhere to try to find out how exactly the bride alien works me and 5 friends just played this I had the bride alien I married a friend and so many questions came up and no one knew the answers to it. #1 does we get a shared win we played as we don't get a shared win. #2 can we attack each other while still married we played as we could which seemed odd to me. then again domestic disputes :D. #3 can we send help even without the other asking for allies we played as we could always send help even without asking. #4 I don't remember but it feels like we had like 7 more questions that came up.

+Cindy Cruz I don't know - I would suggest posing this question at boardgamegeek.com in the Cosmic Encounter forum. There' s a place there for Rules questions.
