today we are at the site of the former Bord na Mona Ballycon yard which used to be a hive of activity. today the decommissioned is only a shadow of its former self. it does still have a small siding where we got a rare glimpse of one of the last non overhaled waggon master locomotives. the track which is in the yard was due to be scraped days from when we filmed. later on in the video we are at the site of a level crossing just meters from Ballycon. this crossing as well as another of its kind was installed to allow for traffic to access the crane school and peatlands however as explained to us by a kind employee the crossing "can be lazy in rainy and cold weather". the crossing had apparently cost board na mona more than 15 thousand euro and due to safety regulations, an unlucky man has to stay in his car all day and make sure the crossing works. we ourselves saw during the video that the barrier did not go down for one of the trains. the second crossing was decommissioned completely. whilst not on film there is a verry interesting display of locomotives in the nearby bog which I will leave coordinates to, and I may make a video on this in the future. for anyone interested in seeing them yourselves the trains operate Monday to Friday and will run up until this November when decades of peat heritage in board na mona will end.
Bord na Mona Ballycon: 53.281648, -7.194879
faulty level crossing: 53.282301, -7.200429
Train in bog: 53.277231, -7.216657
(just realised I left a big chunk of unedited video between 12:02 and 15:30. to late to edit now. ops)
(ALL PEAT TRAINS ON THE EDENDERRY SYSTEM HAVE SINCE STOPPED OPERATION. FLYASH TRAINS STILL RUN EVERY FEW DAYS. 1 PEAT TRAIN DOES STILL RUN FROM BELAIR AROUND 8:30 AM ON WEEK DAYS. THIS OPERATION IS LIGHTLY TO FINISH VERY SOON. LOCATION OF BELAIR PEAT TRAIN: 53°19'56.9"N 7°46'36.0"W)

there sure is something special about them. I just hope that someone creates some sort of a heritage railway along some of the routes.

Lovely stuff! Is this a separate line from Edenderry or are the times for trains the same?

sorry about the delay. this is the same line as edenderry and the same times apply. it is worth remembering that it can take time for the trains to get from edenderry to there and they don't operate weekends. I recently discovered that there is apparently another line that operates from mount dillon tipper to granaghan bog and may even cross the river Shannon however I have not seen this in person yet and am unsure of times and if it does even really operate. I will be going to see it within the coming weeks so when I do I will post more information in the community page if this channel. mountdillin tipper: 53.669567,-7.927654 supposedly operational granaghan bog: 53.738552, -8.018503 bridge that crosses Shannon which might be still operational: 53.700605,-7.984792

I see there's some sort of invisible force of nature in play keeping that thing on the tracks, lol. 🙄🙄🤣

unfortunately the last peat rake was last Thursday out of Belair bog. luckily there are still ash trains on the system out of edenderry i think evry day in the morning. there is also talk about transporting stone on some of the lines for building greenways. there is also still the ocaisional fuel train on parts of the system. there is also suposed to be lots of track lifing trains however alot of theese dont seem to be operating at the moment/ there is a very small chance that there might be some more peat on the edenderry system though it is very unlightly. a good lad to contact for mor information is sean cane on Facebook. facebook.com/sean.cain317/
