today we are at the site of the former Bord na Mona Ballycon yard which used to be a hive of activity. today the decommissioned is only a shadow of its former self. it does still have a small siding where we got a rare glimpse of one of the last non overhaled waggon master locomotives. the track which is in the yard was due to be scraped days from when we filmed. later on in the video we are at the site of a level crossing just meters from Ballycon. this crossing as well as another of its kind was installed to allow for traffic to access the crane school and peatlands however as explained to us by a kind employee the crossing "can be lazy in rainy and cold weather". the crossing had apparently cost board na mona more than 15 thousand euro and due to safety regulations, an unlucky man has to stay in his car all day and make sure the crossing works. we ourselves saw during the video that the barrier did not go down for one of the trains. the second crossing was decommissioned completely. whilst not on film there is a verry interesting display of locomotives in the nearby bog which I will leave coordinates to, and I may make a video on this in the future. for anyone interested in seeing them yourselves the trains operate Monday to Friday and will run up until this November when decades of peat heritage in board na mona will end.
