CMON made a huge error starting to combine KS exclusive addition to expansions within the regular box. Having those extras in an extra box completely changes the value proposition for me, because that extra box can be sold off to reduce the total cost. But when its just a new tray within the same box, it is way harder to sell those extra figures if I wanted to do so, and then I would rather just buy the expansion in retail for 20% off and free shipping and I'll never miss those few extra survivors

Etherfields I absolutely love this game, and look forward to delving into the expansions in the future. Nemesis, brilliant game, but agree, you just done need anymore than either Lockdown or the original and you don't need the expansions, in fact your probably not use most of it. Marvel champions is a good game, I usually hate games that only use card, but the good thing with MC is you only need to buy what you like. KDM I would like this game, but I wouldn't bother with getting the expansions for it, i have Aeons trespass and Oathsworn to scratch my itch for boss battles.

I find this list very confusing. How are Dominion or Aeons End or Marvel Champions FOMO? All Dominion content is available at retail. And I think all of Aeons End is too. What exactly are you missing out on? Dominion isn’t even on crowdfunding. It’s just a retail game that you can buy if you want.

Expansion after expansion after expansion. Crowdfunding is not a necessary component of FOMO. Just because they are at retail does not necessarily mean you can always get them when you want them beyond the initial release window.

Games like Dominion, Aeons End and Marvel Champions don’t go out of print though. You can buy them whenever you want. Just because you want something doesn’t mean the publisher is exploiting FOMO. It’s not like a 30 day kickstarter for a game you’ve never played that won’t be available afterwards.

@@tomlikeabomb6706 I don't know the history of Dominion or Aeons End, but Marvel Champions is published by FFG. FFG has a long history of letting their games go out of print, so no, you can't buy them whenever you want. I have personal experience with this when getting into Arkham Horror and LOTR:LCG. Since I know their history, I bought a bunch of Marvel Champions expansion stuff on FOMO. I will say that they seem to be doing a much better job of keeping Marvel Champions in stock, but for awhile there it was hard to find a lot of the hero expansions if you didn't snap them up right away.

What I love about Marvel Champions is that even if it's an LCG, there's no running story to follow and you don't need to meta deck build to tackle a lot of the content. This puts it way above Arkham and LOTR in terms of skipability. If I don't want something, it doesn't affect my collection at all. I'm not missing the "next chapter" or key combo pieces that I need to defeat a nightmare scenario. I didn't get most of the stuff before the X-Men and I don't feel fomo at all. The standalone modularity of MC is a great tweak to the LCG system.

In many ways, I think the OG here is Advanced Squad Leader. Unlike with Dominion, if you are missing anything, there are games you simply cannot play. (Which does raise the question of how important it is to be able to run a game between Hungarians and Soviets on the Russian steppe, but hey, you might want to do that and if you don't have the Axis Minor expansion, you can't.)

Had a chuckle at the Aeon's End bit, to paraphrase "there's too much stuff, too much creep... and then they released Legacy of Gravehold which didn't integrate very well with the old stuff" - pretty much sums up the problem. There's too much stuff, but then they make something more standalone and people are annoyed it doesn't mix well with everything else. And not different people either, it's different sides of the same brain! (This isn't a dig on Chris, I feel the same way, and it makes no sense whatsoever...)

This was a great collab. Funny thing, even though I am a Marvel/Dc fan, I never really got pulled in by Marvel based board games. From experience many board game based on Ip just haven't been as good as non Ip games.

Not sure FOMO applies to game series as much as Individual games and expansions, e.g. Pandemic variants never triggered even mild FOMO and as many play very differently they are largely different games with some similar mechanics. Luckily post Covid/lockdown cured of most FOMO triggers based on reality check, game play experience and disposable income, e.g. did not use many expansions and often did not like what they added and they often reduced the overall value to me e.g. higher cost diluted original return, now I carefully investigate expansions within a single campaign. In the last few years so far Uprising Curse of the last Emperor is the only game that has triggered my FOMO because it left me wanting more and new content is all new gameplay as opposed to boxes of plastic with cloned gameplay. Most of the others I have gone for standard base game and maybe an add-on but no all in purchases (unless only marginal differences between core and all in e.g. less than 50% extra cost and they add more than just more of the same), if they deliver and reprint then I may buy more e.g. bought Hexplore it Fall of Ancients Core box and it delivered, now gone all in on it's expansion and small add-ons , the campaign book is unbelievable value as post crowdfund they added 70% more content, 700 page campaign book containing 1700 plus paragraphs for under $40 but do not feel the need to buy other Hexplore It games. The series games like Legendary and Pandemic variety are likely marketing them at audiences attracted by different themes who either do not have any but have played some with others or have one but would buy others because they like the theme, however I know no one who would buy all of them through FOMO but would buy every Terraforming Mars or Scythe game. As for KDM I play it monthly, one of my earliest crowdfunded purchases, play with family and friends and cherry pick add-ons, it maybe lifestyle for some but the game mechanics doesn't change much with the add-ons just they present different challenges, looking forward to the new challenges with the Gamblers chest arriving this year, finally.

I agree that there isn't a company that does FOMO better than Level 99. Millennium Blades is a great example. No one should have needed more than the base set, but they really did a good job convincing you that you needed it all. Kinda surprised about Alhambra on here, mainly because despite Queen Games efforts, I don't know anyone who plays anything but the base game. As for Marvel United, I'm mostly just in it for the minis.

Man, I'm glad every time I'm not looking at White Death, I forget it exists. Like, I see all those Bonus things you get for backing at the base pledge and think "I need these." But I don't need them. I already have Marvel Zombies on the way and two expansions pre-ordered from a third Party Seller, and the 6 or 7 different kinds of Zombicide aren't compatible with each other. And if I'm gonna get another Zombicide, it's gotta' be the 2nd Edition, because that's the one that gets all the neat IP Crossover packs like Ghostbusters and The Boys and Thundercats.

The only expansion that I know of that has a 2 on it is Carcassonne: The River 2. I guess a similar thing to Prelude where The River does improve the start of the game.

Ticket to Ride.. how many stand-alone versions and map packs at this point? I've lost count. And for a family-weight gateway game... Maybe not as bad as Marvel United in terms of total cost and certainly not in mass of plastic, but at least Marvel United is playing off the popular IP and obscure comic book characters that a vocal minority keep asking for. Will TTR continue until every country, continent, major city and time period has been represented in multiple maps? And let us not forget Alvin & Dexter. And now they're coming out with Legacy? How much TTR does any one person need?! (I once owned both USA + 1910 and Europe, and that was already too much) Another early Days of Wonder culprit was Small World, which had expansions upon expansions and then re-printed the expansions bundled together. And what about Too Many Bones? It took 3 stand-alone versions and even a couple side expansions that don't even really work (campaign and create-a-boss side-games) and yet people still go all in on it (including me). FOMO at its worst. But nothing beats the original Kickstarter FOMO monster Zombicide. They continue to come out with "chase rare" promo expansions (with IP's spanning TMNT to Ghost Busters to Monty Python) just to fuel the FOMO and completionist attitude that they spawned in so many board game addicts.

Gotta say, I have every single expansion (not the promos) of Dominion 😅 If another expansion were to come out, I’d probably buy it. Some of them are okay, some I only played once, and others are my absolute favorite. Plunder, the latest, is one of my favorites, which is why I’d buy the potential new one that could come out. Not really correct comparison with Kingdom Death: Monster, because most of those 100 items are just from the company, not for the actual game. They are for painting enthusiasts not for players. It still lives on FOMO, but just because if you don't get it right away you might just not get it or get it way in to the future, or way more expensive.

I dont think i agree that retail and kickstarter FOMO is the same at all. One is just generic marketing to buy more (retail) i.e. you want more. The other is buy this NOW or risk not getting it or paying unfair prices later (kickstarter) i.e. missing out. So I don't really think they belong in the same category. I can always choose to wait and decide on retail so I am not "missing out" on anything where as the other it feels like more of a gun to my head.

It's easy to blame publishers for abusing FOMO. But we are to blame: as long as we buy the crap they're throwing at us, this trend will not stop. Be strong, don't let them fool you. For example: I had Castles of Burgundy First Edition. Then I upgraded to the Second 'improved' Edition and sold the First Edition. A few months after that, the Special Edition was announced. I swore to myself that I will not support such a business model anymore. Haven't looked at the campaign and will never buy it. And yet the campaign was a great success.

Finally two of the most adequate boardgames channels get together! Glad to see Chris here))) About Etherfields - for me the more I've played the more this game just felt apart. Corebox was good, but after all the expansion I gave it 3/10. Packed it mid-session mid-campaign (the last expansion) and sold it the next day. Good ideas put together into poorly designed game. Way too many components and mechanics not used or even needed at all.

I got sucked in by Legendary. I had most of the Marvel content, but did sell a couple of the expansions that I didn’t like (still have to much, though). Re: Pandemic, it’s like Monopoly…paste a new theme on and someone will by it. FLUXX, Munchkin, Smash Up are also more affordable games that paste on multiple themes.
