It’s really cool to listen to your self-reflection over these episodes Brian! I’ve still avoided going all in so far but I’ve come super close… I know myself quite well in that I am fickle and chop and change games quite often, so I’d be worried about never getting through too much content. That being said I hope you do enjoy your Aeons End collection- I’ve heard it’s a stellar game 😎👍🏻

My mans bought all of Aeon's End just to make a video about it being a mistake! I'm jk, but I can understand how all that content is daunting. Luckily AE is an amazing game so you could have done it with a worse game. I would recommend keeping the game separated by wave (big box + small box expansions + promos). It makes it more accessible when you think about each wave discretely. Also, you can just play a single wave until you're comfortable with it and ignore the others until you're ready for more content.

I thinking 🤔 to buy AE but.. Im very impressed with card 🃏 game mechanism but Nemesis loika fir, me very boring and weak… so rhre is no really threat and Tension from Nemesis you just play same cards 🎴 and repeat 🔁 the process until you win… or maybe Im wrong?

These are the Bryan videos that hit close to home for me.. Knowing at the time your brain is making a bad decision but seemingly unable to prevent yourself from making it. Aeon's End is particularly egregious case because for me, I really loved the Aeon's End Legacy game, but all this additional content is actually stuff i really don't want to have to deal with.. it's not just that it's not worth the extra costs, it's that I don't want the headache of trying to incorporate the extra content.

All the small expansions can easily fit into any of the core boxes. But yeah you don't need all those boxes at all. 2 cores of AE and a bunch of the mini expansions slotted into either core box is heaps of content.

@@GameBrigade this has become a hobby of collection in many ways even more than playing games, in some ways I am reminded of houses on my block who compete for having the most christmas decorations, that is how it seems with some of these KS games. Also with the cult of the new, so few of these really big and expensive games are talked about after 3 weeks because we are onto the next one: for example a lot of people went out and got Roll Player adventure for almost 150$, they posted about it for a few weeks and then it was that horror game Final Girl and then a few weeks later it was Merchants of the Dark road. I have found within 3 months of release almost all of these big games end up at the swap meet for sometimes 1/2 the price and often not even played.

I live in a tiny apartment, so I have space limits. Nemesis is the only mini heavy game that I went all in. I have definitely looked at reviews of expansions to see if they are worth it. I try to consolidate expansion content in the core box. I will leave written notes to highlight what is expansion content versus base game when setting up the game.

Great video. Buyers regret is huge and is definitely being driven hard by Kickstarter style products. On one thing you said specifically - So I don't think the idea that people who got in at the start and have "had years to play it" is a good mentality. There is no reason that you need to buy anything else for Aeons ends. You have years of entertainment so... Play it.

Great video man. This definitely resonates with me. The compulsive nature of backing Kickstarters and even buying into games in general, is difficult. Being honest with yourself should be a no-brainer. However, the marketing and psychological tactics deployed are rarely seen for what they are.

My thing is that the KS campaign is usually exciting. Unlocking stretch goal, seeing sneak peaks, looking at all the KS exclusive content. I was so hyped by Freedom Five, Darkest Dungeon, and Primal to name a few. Once the campaign is over I usually find myself thinking the same thing as you. Am I even gonna enjoy the game and will I ever be able to play all of the content? I still want to play the games I've backed (for the most part) but I'm also annoyed that I fell for the same trap so many time.

Part of what's helped me is recognizing that I'm missing out by *not* playing games repeatedly. My FOMO is that if I keep getting All-Ins, I won't be able to try the stuff I have enough to get to the place where expansion content becomes relevant.

On the whole, I have avoided the All-in pledge, but that has not stopped me from purchasing so many games that I don’t have time to play. I think these purchases are my equivalent of going All-in without being mindful of reality. I have been slowly, and I mean slowly, getting control of this habit/pattern of thoughtless collecting, since the games are not getting played.

I almost never go all in and it is 100% due to time. Well...time AND money I suppose, but if I had more time to play games I know I would be buying more as well. When I do go all in I find it best to do it in two parts, between the campaign and the PM. Waiting for the PM to upgrade my pledge usually lets me wait out the FOMO enough to come to my senses and take a realistic approach to whether I really want it all or not. Also, you just dipping down and hiding behind the boxes at the end cracked me up 🤣

Or the game needs to be all in with a storage solution like kingdom rush elemental uprising chest or recently 51st state ultimate. Marvel United X-Men:core+ 1 expansion. Wild assent: silvestrem pledge (and I already feel I overreached) Only game I went all in is Primal. But I do buy a lot of LCG lol

This was me with one of the Arcadia Quest kickstarters, as well as one for Xenoshyft. I made the same mistake on two games by the same publisher because both campaigns happened before either shipped. They both delivered in the sense that I got a bunch of plastic and cards in the mail, but man, did I get screwed by some lousy gameplay. I’ve learned my lesson. I don’t regret spending as much as I have on other games (generally bought outside of kickstarter), like Mage Knight or Kingdom Death: Monster, but the other day, I added the entirety of Cloudspire (like $550 total) to a cart. I didn’t quite plan on buying it, but I had done something similar for Too Many Bones and didn’t regret it. So I started reading some reviews and went from considering just getting the core set to just closing the tab altogether. Not much, but a big win for me. It helps that I genuinely don’t know where I would keep it at this point. 70 board games is plenty…

Great Video. I have also fell into the same trap. When I got into solo board gaming in 2014, I had a very small collection. About 10 - 12 Games. My collection has grown immensely in that time, and it becomes harder and harder to get rid of board games that I have lost interest in. My problem isn't so much the fear of missing out, it's how quickly I get bored with a game system. This leads me to buy alot of medium to high complexity games with long setup times that rarely hit the table (Mage Knight, Robinson Crusoe, Phantom Leader, Warfighter).

I only go all in on games I have played and enjoyed. That way I know I will play it. A good example was Marvel United. I got the Corebox and loved it. Got the all-in pledge for the first season at a $100 premium and then went all in on second season after having playing the hell out of first season. The $100 premium is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, especially if it means I avoid 9-10 other all-in KSs. The Aftermarket isn’t all that bad and it does a good job of keeping you honest as to what you spend your money on. People just seem to be terrified of other people ripping them off even where they are happy for game companies to do the same.

I have been curious about this game for years and with the most recent Kickstarter dropping (Past and Future) I decided to cave... into ordering a single copy of the original through my store. I saw how much there was to this game and while I think I might be able to get through most of it over time, I was relieved to see I did not need to even be tempted by going all in since I can get much of the content through distributors. So for now I have one dollar pledged to Past and Future and if my friends like the game I'll pick up the promos in the Pledge Manager and order more of the game via my distributor. I have however fallen into the trap for a few other games. I did back all of the Arena content that has show up on KS over the years and now have that goliath on the way, so I am really going to have to flog that game to my Sunday dungeon crawler group and maybe my wargame friends. I also went all in on Bloodborne, which turned out to be unnecessary since I had a friend who ended up getting it as well and we just played through their copy. I can't complain too much about that fiasco since I kept the game in the box it was delivered in and flipped it for a profit. Lastly, the biggest one was convincing myself into going all in on Darkest Dungeon, which I really am still skeptical about being an experience I will get my money's worth out of despite being a big fan of the IP. Time will tell. Normally though, when I go all in these days, I have shopped the project around to friends, looked thoroughly at gameplay, and weighed it against other games in my collection, so my confidence level is high when I do. So far this has been a year of expansions for me and I have mostly stayed away from backing or buying any new games, but I decided after watching a bunch of gameplay and seeing I can get it conventionally, to get Aeon's End. I definitely could use a good co-op deck builder now that I got rid of Xenoshyft, Legendary Encounters games, and Arkham Horror LCG (sadly my group did not care for it), so I am looking forward to its arrival in a week or so.

Even base pledges sometimes arrive with so many extras that it's off putting to try and get it all to the table. I tend to only back base pledges and skip the crazy CMON esque games full of minis too much plastic and not enough game in most cases.

I stopped going all in after 2-3 CMON all ins...realizing there were things I wasn't even touching. I still have Arcadia Quest characters sealed. Now I look for the value. I backed Marvel United at the pledge level where I got 2 expansions and the core box with SG's for $90. I almost always just get the game on KS to get the SG's..the only way they sometimes get me is if an expansion was KSE.. but even then I won't go all in. I guess the backer needs to make a few mistakes before they realize it's a marketing tactic.

Of all series I would think Aeon's End is one you don't need to feel as much regret buying into. Each of the big boxes is self contained and the game plays pretty quickly. Its far less demending to get into than an lcg or campaign game. Just start with the base game and forget about everything else until the fancy strikes to add more.

Your video really resonates with me. It‘s all fun and excitement until it shows up at your doorstep and wants to be played instead of games you already love and have to little time to play. Especially if there are expansions that do not naturally integrate into the base game AND take a lot of physical space (with no proper way of storage). Currently, there is a bundle deal on the German version of Aeon‘s End for the first three waves (including expansions and promos) and I am rather hesitant. I currently think about just buying and trying the base game before getting anything else (or maybe skip entirely in order to avoid seeding any completionist urges). PS: My favorite deckbuilder is Imperium Classics/Legends - which is rather affordable and does not take a lot of space at all 🙂

Unless the all in has everything I want, I’d go to the tier closest to what I want and just add whatever is missing. I can do without the playmats or the art books. I don’t really care much about the cosmetics unless they really add to the game play. I prefer my miniatures unpainted. For some reason, I love the original untainted looks of the unpainted miniatures. So I usually look over the contents of the all in pledges and see if there are anything that I don’t want. Sleeves are another thing as I can get standard good quality sleeves elsewhere, I don’t really want to get the expensive ones unless the card sizes are unconventional and unique.

While I generally agree with your premise (and lord knows I'm guilty of always going all in), Aeon's End is one of the games I would recommend to anyone to go all in, so you shouldn't regret your purchase. It's the best deck builder out there IMHO, and each set doesn't really add any new rules to the way the game plays. The only real differences are with Legacy where you create a character and follow the story more closely and then you have some minor adjustments in the New Age with the expedition system. But the core gameplay stays the same throughout. That was one of the reason why me and my group were able to get through all the content thus far, because there weren't new rules to learn every time we wanted to play. I went all in with New Age (the KS just before this latest one) and I'm so glad I did.

@@GameBrigade Yeah I won't sugar coat it there. Organizing that much content is a beast. I remember When I first got into Legendary and had to organize like 10 expansions with no official storage solution being offered by upper deck. That was....well, time consuming to say the least.
@OmeganKryist

For me personally I think that it is more worth while to find a few games that really work with your group and to get more content for those games over getting wholly new games. Granted when it comes to Aeons End the primary thing you will get out of the new expansions is in large the nemeses. Sure there are loads of player cards as well, and new mages but I think in large people will gravitate towards a particular mage or two and find certain supply cards more desirable. Certain there is a notion of having too much of something when it comes to cards games, and I think Aeons End suffers from this with all its expansions. So I think it is something to be willing to acknowledge when buying things what specifically you are getting out of buying these expansions.

Honestly the mistake here is getting the other deck building card games when you know this one is on the way. A Mistake everyone makes. I tend to go All-In when I see something as well, but If I see another game later that is like a game I have on its way I am more likely to pass on it. Like for example I got All-In of Edge of Darkness, then I saw Call of Killforth and was going to go All-In as well, then halfway through the campaign, I looked at the games I had coming and canceled my pledge because It looked really similar to Edge of Darkness. Now I'll be honest I don't always do that, but you got to try to look past the Fomo of everything.

For me Aeons End is my #1 game. I think a person neesds to give it a chance. The first time I didn't connect with it. But afterwards it became my #1 game. Also there are so many cards but you are never using them all. The cards and heros are all mixed and then choose for a game a limited amount you will use and this way each game is different./

its gonna be REALLY hard because you have everything.I would say play one of the cores first to see if you like it.Just set some time grab someone and see if you like the gameplay loop then after that just go by released date one by one and if you are wanting to store it all I think a good amount would fit into the legacy or maybe even both but the thing is there is tokens for certain bosses and it can be onverwlehming if you try to organize all at once.I would just take it slow because its a lot to take in in terms of content.When it comes to FOMO or KS games I don't think I have that anymore because DC deckbuilding like I bought everything for it even the big box and then I just thought to myself am I really going to play it,why do I want more stuff if I don't play it? Just had to tell myself that I had to be a more smart shopper.

@dylan2182
@dylan2182 2 жыл бұрын
@@GameBrigade the accessory packs just add dividers and basic cards for all the mages, however the first one also provides upgraded components for all the cardboard tokens. So you may want to just play the original Aeon's End with that pack. Going through it myself I do think the more recent content at least up to New Age, haven't touched Outcast or LOG yet, has more interesting designs for both mages and nemesis. The biggest issue I have with getting all of Aeon's End is the amount of market cards is unmanageable. I've owned the first two core boxes for over a year and even with just those two I found setting up the market to be a pain. When I cracked open New Age I just used the market cards from that set to make it easier on myself. I hope you do get it to the table and enjoy it because it is a great game.

Just don’t buy it. Sooner or later you have to draw the line otherwise it will never end. That’s what I did and so far this year I’ve passed on everything from both Kickstarter and Gamefound. It’s just getting ridiculously too much especially when your spending $400+ on one board game. I mean look what you have on the table there. Madness. Enough is enough with all these crowd funded games. What I was doing late last yr was just putting a buck down then when the pledge manager opened if I didn’t really care anymore or the hype had worn off, I’d just pass. So I lost a buck, big deal.

The day has come to stop this madness. All it consistently delivers is anxiety. No crowdfunding for the year 2023. Probably not ever again. AE just isn’t fun solo. You want to experience the tension together with friends. Anyway good that you learned that expansions are pointless. No exceptions.

EOD kickstarters with way too much addon content are pure garbage. You're buying a game you don't even know you'll like, and expansions, which may ruin the game experience to begin with, on your favorite games even. Expansions are selective for intense groups and are very much not an enchantment in so many cases. Expansions can take away simplicity and mechanics that run smoothly and make jagged experiences that are a mess. I want to enforce the fact that kickstarters with too much EXCLUSIVE content should never EVER be backed. There could be some fun promo stuff or alternate art cards or something. But whole expansions or the likes? Gt hell out of here with that garbage. If the content from a kickstarter cannot be bought post ks phase, it's sorta scam. In context of what they are offering you in extra content isn't even part of the core experience, and therefore just money grab slapped on content that is not even relevant. DO NOT SUPPORT THIS PRACTISE!
