This is a major gripe I have with the board game industry as a whole- there’s a lot of emphasis on mechanics (good), but not enough on things like table space and layout, insert quality (layout, sleeve accommodation, chance of cheap plastic inserts breaking, etc), component longevity (Quacks), etc

Played this 4 times in the past 2 days. Had a blast playing this with my daughter! I’m calling this - Mythic Battles ‘lite’ I would love to see my arenas, more arena surprises, and more crowd/trophy cards. I also think this game should be compared to Funkoverse and Unmatched. I get the same feel and general mechanics from each one. This is one of my favorite genres, and I love that designers are finding a way to make awesome skirmish games, accessible!

I have taken to playing this at my local gaming group with some complete board game novices from my work and within one 3 hour session of me sitting and refereeing them they have basically grasped everything outside of checking the glossary for the keywords every now and then. To me this game truly resembles the idea of easy to learn, hard to master. Once you play through 1 complete round thats it you know the mechanics and rules. Then its just down to learning the nuances of things like push/pull, when to use reactions and the mental gymnastics of trying to decide what your opponent is planning. As for the set up and tear down times, thank god the game doesn't have 30+ card decks per character or cards useable by anyone because that's what makes it (for me atleast) incredibly easy to sell to people. Not a lot to keep track of, just focus on the cards in your hand and the objectives

Totally agree with your review! I'm not usually a big fan of 1v1 combat style games but played a couple of games of SFB and it was really fun. Neither of us studied the characters beforehand. We just picked a set of 3 that looked fun. We took a quick look at the cards for the ones we selected to see what we had to work with and started playing. Thinking about how to achieve the objectives or prevent your opponent from achieving them within the constraints of your available actions/cards and hero placement on the board is a great puzzle to try to solve! Definitely not just a beat-em-up slugfest. Definitely look forward to playing it again. Thanks for the great videos!

I have to 100% agree with you on all your positive comments, negative comments and wishes for more heroes and challenges! Here are the things I wish for future expansions (and some I wished were already in the base game): - Player aids, cheat sheets and especially info on each champions gameplay styles (is this one more tank, how about movement, etc) that would help new players to choose better team comp (To me, this it the most obvious and necessary thing missing in this game...maybe Mythic should have focused on that instead of enormous platic trays) - Some sort of "SFB laws booklet" where there are some situational rules explanation that the main rulebook does not cover. - A free for all arena game mode (with an adapted map ahd challenges maybe?) - More support/tank heroes and I'd like more unique characters like Akhet/bird character that its abilities are related with the cores.

When I got the KS delivery, I almost sold it immediately. I have a complete set of Unmatched and I thought this would provide the same gameplay but in ridiculously larger and more expensive box (dont get me started on those ridiculous gametrayz)... however I decided to give it a try and after first play decided to keep it. It has issues but fundamentally what I liked is that, different to other card driven skirmish games (like Unmatched), this one is not solely about killing your adversary first. Those goal cards and they way they varying in points and how new ones come and go, really create an unique feel, making it more multidimensional than "just kill".

Such a great little game, we love it. But wow the gametrayz insert is the worst thing ever done to a board game box. Excessively and unnecessarily large box to fit all of their unnecessary trayz. I foamcored it the same night I got it. It was the first game I've ever done foam insert for, but it was almost 100% necessary.

I'm with you 100% on this one. I backed this game with expectations and the game met or exceeded them. Its a really fun light skirmish game that I'm glad I own. Already pre-ordered the retail heroes that don't come with the pledge. Thankfully they'll fit in jumbo box since I ditched the trays immediately.

It's a really nice game. I have played it a few times and it's always tense and close games. Some characters are more maneuverable and some are good at slugging it out. All of the characters seem balanced thus far. This game has a lot of room to grow to with expansions. I could easily see a 2nd season of this game.

Hey Alex. I like this game and I missed the KS. Currently Superfan box is possible to get in Mythic games shop, but Force of nature expansion is out of stock currently. Not sure if there will be more KS for this game, most likely will be as it is popular enough, but the question is when. So what would you suggest me to do, get Superfan box (12 champions) + sleeves from Mythic games shop, which with shipping will be all 104$ or wait if there will be expansion in store and get also that in addition or wait until next KS to check all-in pledge. Glad to hear it’s good! I commissioned a rather expensive paint job for the kickstarter and I was hoping to see your review before I agreed to the budget. I actually couldn’t wait and just sent it out to the painter just this morning before your review came out. The Kickstarter pledge manager offered Feldherr foam carry bags for the game, did you not order those? Although if the game is going to be expanded, I guess the game will outgrow the bag. I haven’t played the game yet, my only concern perhaps is the fact that each player activates all 3 power tokens (so 3 activations) and can potentially devastate the opponent. In terms of potential expansions for the game, apart from the obvious additional heroes and more challenges, do you think it would be interesting adding different arena boards? Hi! Your recent video with your wife made me look into this game again and I think I will give this a shot. Do you think the core box with just 6 heroes will give decent replayability or is it going to get stale quickly? I saw a pre-order for the core box for just 25 euros, but the superfan box is still on sale on the mythic store and due to the weak dollar thats only 73 euros for double the heros and statues. Plus gametrayz and plastic tokens, but as you stated, these are arguably negatives. Really turned of by that ridiculous box.

I did not get the expansions because it was a extra box and what Alex said about most of the plastic tokens i agree totally 💯 you need to paint them or just use the cardboard ones. I wish the box was smaller and the trays where a properly sized. For me I want a quick game what is compleet and I can play out of the box, do not feel for more new charcters releasese that do not fit in the box same reason why I stoped doing lcgs and started boardgaming (compleet game in the box experience)

For this game the playmat has the same size as the board and in my opionion the colors on the playmat are not so good as the ones on the board. One advantage with the playmat: Actually you have (with the KS version) enough components to do 2 games in parallel (thats why they added two decks of victory goals to the box).

And expansions seem to be really simple they are just different characters so just pick up whatever one you want when they come out.

Those trays are a terrible design. I think the idea is that you can bring some champions out to compete with other players in a tournament. But the problem is the tray fit only 3 specific champions, you can't put whatever you like in it. So eventually you kind of have to bring the whole box and that's where those trays become useless. I threw them all away and put everything (including the force of nature expansion) in a big storage box, which is way smaller than the core box, so I can bring this out easily, and it fit into that gigantic core box. Apart from this, this game is a blast. Just like you said, I want to play it again and again and again.

I was ok at most for me. I would play it again, but don't want and need to have it in my collection. Too much luck involved when it comes to card draw, bad draws makes your turn not fun - you do what you can rather than having multiple (fun) options. It was hard for me to tell which cards belongs to which character. I think I expected something else. I can see others liking it.

definitely my worst game played this year. I just watched in horror as the opponent had the exact card to invalidate every move I took, while solo killing my entire team. It was the largest masacre I've really ever seen in a game and I was just jaw dropped again and again when I'd say on my 3rd turn or 4th turn I do this and again told, nope I have a card for that. I literally felt like I was 5 years old on a play ground and saying I shoot you, and another child screaming NO I HAVE A MAGIC FORCEFIELD AND A DEATH RAY AND YOURE DEAD. I get that he probably had a good build, luck and I was picking randomly, but that's so far from what I want in a game. It actually feels like unless you both owned the game, or had some local tournaments set up, it could never really be fair based on how poorly hero choices could stack up. If the game can be that lopsided with team builds, how can you ever show it to new people without the hope that the heavy luck components eek them out a win?

@Tadqwerty29 some characters do the bulk of their damage by moving people into objects, some characters have the interruption card that stops them from being moved. Just as an example, but you can have reaction interrupt cards stacked against you in the opposing side that negate your turn, while having useless reaction interrupt cards for what your fighting. it's a little bit luck (did you activate the right guy do they have the card in hand), but there are extremely hard counter picks across all the expansions. There are also guys that have extremely high aoe and guys that can move team members extremely fast. Again lucky... but you can have an enemy that can kill an entire team at your gate turn 1 (who again can maybe luckily hard negate everything you throw at him).
